1 Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, "Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father, and he has accumulated all this wealth of his by using our father's property."	1 Sennonché egli sentì parlare i figli di Làbano in questi termini: "Giacobbe si è preso tutto quello che era di nostro padre e ha messo insieme tutta questa ricchezza con quanto era di nostro padre".
2 Jacob perceived, too, that Laban's attitude toward him was not what it had previously been.	2 Giacobbe osservò pure il volto di Làbano; si accorse che non era più come prima verso di lui.
3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers, where you were born, and I will be with you."	3 Inoltre il Signore disse a Giacobbe: "Torna alla terra dei tuoi padri e al tuo parentado e io sarò con te".
4 So Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah to meet him where he was in the field with his flock.	4 Allora Giacobbe mandò a chiamare Rachele e Lia, perché venissero nella campagna, presso il suo gregge,
5 There he said to them: "I have noticed that your father's attitude toward me is not as it was in the past; but the God of my father has been with me.	5 e disse loro: "Io vedo che il volto di vostro padre non è più come prima verso di me; ma il Dio del padre mio è stato con me.
6 You well know what effort I put into serving your father;	6 Voi stesse sapete che io ho servito vostro padre con tutte le mie forze,
7 yet your father cheated me and changed my wages time after time. God, however, did not let him do me any harm.	7 mentre vostro padre mi ha ingannato e ha cambiato dieci volte il mio salario; ma Dio non gli ha permesso di farmi del male.
8 Whenever your father said, 'The speckled animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear speckled young; whenever he said, 'The streaked animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear streaked young.	8 Se egli diceva: "Le bestie punteggiate saranno il tuo salario", tutto il gregge figliava delle bestie punteggiate; ma se diceva: "Le bestie striate saranno il tuo salario", allora tutto il gregge figliava delle bestie striate.
9 Thus God reclaimed your father's livestock and gave it to me.	9 Così Dio ha sottratto il bestiame di vostro padre e lo ha dato a me.
10 Once, in the breeding season, I had a dream in which I saw mating he-goats that were streaked, speckled and mottled.	10 Una volta, al tempo in cui il gregge entrava in calore, io alzai gli occhi in sogno e vidi che i becchi in procinto di montare le bestie erano striati, punteggiati e chiazzati.
11 In the dream God's messenger called to me, 'Jacob!' 'Here!' I replied.	11 E l'angelo di Dio mi disse in sogno: "Giacobbe!". Risposi: "Eccomi!".
12 Then he said: 'Note well. All the he-goats in the flock, as they mate, are streaked, speckled and mottled, for I have seen all the things that Laban has been doing to you.	12 Riprese: "Alza gli occhi e guarda: tutti i becchi che montano le bestie sono striati, punteggiati e chiazzati, perché ho visto quello che ti fa Làbano.
13 I am the God who appeared to you in Bethel, where you anointed a memorial stone and made a vow to me. Up, then! Leave this land and return to the land of your birth.'"	13 Io sono il Dio di Betel! Tu ungesti là una stele sacra e mi facesti un voto. Ora, lévati; parti da questo paese e ritorna al tuo paese natale!".
14 Rachel and Leah answered him: "Have we still an heir's portion in our father's house?	14 Rachele e Lia gli risposero e dissero: "Abbiamo forse ancora una parte o una eredità nella casa di nostro padre?
15 Are we not regarded by him as outsiders? He not only sold us; he has even used up the money that he got for us!	15 Forse non siamo state tenute da lui in conto di straniere, dal momento che ci ha vendute e in più si è mangiato il nostro prezzo?
16 All the wealth that God reclaimed from our father really belongs to us and our children. Therefore, do just as God has told you."	16 Tutta la ricchezza che Dio ha sottratto a nostro padre è nostra e dei nostri figli. Ed ora fa' pure quanto Dio ti ha detto!".
17 Jacob proceeded to put his children and wives on camels,	17 Allora Giacobbe si levò, caricò i suoi figli e le sue mogli sui cammelli
18 and he drove off with all his livestock and all the property he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.	18 e menò via tutto il suo bestiame e tutto il suo avere che si era acquistato in Paddan-Aram, per andare da Isacco, suo padre, nella terra di Canaan.
19 Now Laban had gone away to shear his sheep, and Rachel had meanwhile appropriated her father's household idols.	19 Intanto Làbano era andato a tosare le sue greggi e Rachele rubò gl'idoli che appartenevano a suo padre.
20 Jacob had hoodwinked Laban the Aramean by not telling him of his intended flight.	20 Giacobbe riuscì a eludere la perspicacia di Làbano, l'arameo, senza lasciargli capire che stava per fuggire,
21 Thus he made his escape with all that he had. Once he was across the Euphrates, he headed for the highlands of Gilead.	21 e così poté fuggire lui con tutto il suo avere. Si levò, dunque, passò il fiume, e si diresse verso la montagna di Gàlaad.
22 On the third day, word came to Laban that Jacob had fled.	22 Al terzo giorno fu riferito a Làbano che Giacobbe era fuggito;
23 Taking his kinsmen with him, he pursued him for seven days until he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.	23 allora egli prese con sé i suoi fratelli, lo inseguì per sette giorni di cammino e lo raggiunse sulla montagna di Gàlaad.
24 But that night God appeared to Laban the Aramean in a dream and warned him, "Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!"	24 Ma Dio venne da Làbano, l'arameo, in sogno notturno e gli disse: "Bada di non litigare con Giacobbe, né in bene né in male!".
25 When Laban overtook Jacob, Jacob's tents were pitched in the highlands; Laban also pitched his tents there, on Mount Gilead.	25 Làbano andò dunque a raggiungere Giacobbe, che aveva piantato la sua tenda sulla montagna. Làbano aveva pure piantato la sua tenda sulla montagna di Gàlaad.
26 "What do you mean," Laban demanded of Jacob, "by hoodwinking me and carrying off my daughters like war captives?	26 Disse allora Làbano a Giacobbe: "Che cosa hai fatto? Hai rubato il mio cuore e hai condotto via le mie figlie come prigioniere di guerra!
27 Why did you dupe me by stealing away secretly? You should have told me, and I would have sent you off with merry singing to the sound of tambourines and harps.	27 Perché sei fuggito di nascosto, ti sei sottratto da me né mi avvertisti, in modo che io ti avessi potuto accomiatare con festa e con canti, a suon di tamburelli e di cetre?
28 You did not even allow me a parting kiss to my daughters and grandchildren! What you have now done is a senseless thing.	28 E non mi hai permesso di baciare i miei figli e le mie figlie! Il tuo modo di fare è stato da folle!
29 I have it in my power to harm all of you; but last night the God of your father said to me, 'Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!'	29 Sarebbe il mio parere di farvi del male, ma il Dio di tuo padre mi parlò la notte scorsa dicendo: "Bada di non litigare con Giacobbe né in bene né in male!".
30 Granted that you had to leave because you were desperately homesick for your father's house, why did you steal my gods?"	30 Certo, tu te ne sei andato perché avevi una grande nostalgia della casa di tuo padre, ma perché mi hai rubato i miei dèi?".
31 "I was frightened," Jacob replied to Laban, "at the thought that you might take your daughters away from me by force.	31 Giacobbe rispose a Làbano: "Io avevo paura e pensavo che tu mi avresti tolto con la forza le tue figlie.
32 But as for your gods, the one you find them with shall not remain alive! If, with my kinsmen looking on, you identify anything here as belonging to you, take it." Jacob, of course, had no idea that Rachel had stolen the idols.	32 Ma chiunque sia colui presso il quale avrai trovato i tuoi dèi, egli dovrà morire! Alla presenza dei nostri fratelli riscontra quanto vi può essere di tuo presso di me e prenditelo!". Giacobbe non sapeva infatti che li aveva rubati Rachele.
33 Laban then went in and searched Jacob's tent and Leah's tent, as well as the tents of the two maidservants; but he did not find the idols. Leaving Leah's tent, he went into Rachel's.	33 Allora Làbano entrò nella tenda di Giacobbe, poi nella tenda di Lia e nella tenda delle due serve, ma non trovò nulla. Poi uscì dalla tenda di Lia ed entrò nella tenda di Rachele.
34 Now Rachel had taken the idols, put them inside a camel cushion, and seated herself upon them. When Laban had rummaged through the rest of her tent without finding them,	34 Ora Rachele aveva preso gli dèi e li aveva messi nella sella del cammello, poi s'era seduta sopra di essi, così Làbano frugò in tutta la tenda ma non li trovò.
35 Rachel said to her father, "Let not my lord feel offended that I cannot rise in your presence; a woman's period is upon me." So, despite his search, he did not find his idols.	35 Ella disse a suo padre: "Non si offenda il mio signore se io non posso alzarmi davanti a te, perché ho ciò che avviene regolarmente alle donne". Così Làbano cercò in tutta la tenda e non trovò gli dèi.
36 Jacob, now enraged, upbraided Laban. "What crime or offense have I committed," he demanded, "that you should hound me so fiercely?	36 Allora a Giacobbe scoppiò l'ira, litigò contro Làbano e prese a dirgli: "Qual è la legge che ho violato e qual è la mia offesa perché tu ti sia precipitato a inseguirmi?
37 Now that you have ransacked all my things, have you found a single object taken from your belongings? If so, produce it here before your kinsmen and mine, and let them decide between us two.	37 Tu hai frugato tutta la mia roba; che hai trovato di tutti gli arnesi di casa tua? Mettilo qui davanti ai fratelli miei e ai fratelli tuoi e facciano da arbitri tra noi due.
38 "In the twenty years that I was under you, no ewe or she-goat of yours ever miscarried, and I have never feasted on a ram of your flock.	38 Vent'anni sono stato con te! Le tue pecore e le tue capre non hanno abortito e gli abbacchi del tuo gregge non li ho mai mangiati.
39 I never brought you an animal torn by wild beasts; I made good the loss myself. You held me responsible for anything stolen by day or night.	39 Giammai ti riportai una bestia sbranata; io stesso di tasca mia ne riparavo il danno; e tu reclamavi da me ciò che veniva rubato di giorno e ciò che veniva rubato di notte.
40 How often the scorching heat ravaged me by day, and the frost by night, while sleep fled from my eyes!	40 Di giorno mi divorava il caldo e di notte il freddo, il sonno svaniva dai miei occhi.
41 Of the twenty years that I have now spent in your household, I slaved fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, while you changed my wages time after time.	41 Vent'anni ho trascorso a casa tua! T'ho servito quattordici anni per le tue due figlie e sei anni per il tuo gregge e tu hai cambiato il mio salario dieci volte.
42 If my ancestral God, the God of Abraham and the Awesome One of Isaac, had not been on my side, you would now have sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and the fruits of my toil, and last night he gave judgment."	42 Se non fosse stato con me il Dio di mio padre, il Dio di Abramo, il Terrore d'Isacco, tu ora mi avresti mandato via a mani vuote; ma Dio ha veduto la mia afflizione e la fatica delle mie mani e la scorsa notte egli ha sentenziato!".
43 Laban replied to Jacob: "The women are mine, their children are mine, and the flocks are mine; everything you see belongs to me. But since these women are my daughters, I will now do something for them and for the children they have borne.	43 Làbano allora rispose e disse a Giacobbe: "Queste figlie sono mie figlie, questi figli sono miei figli, queste pecore sono pecore mie e tutto quello che vedi è mio. E che posso io fare oggi a queste mie figlie e ai loro figlioli che esse hanno partorito?
44 Come, then, we will make a pact, you and I; the LORD shall be a witness between us."	44 Vieni, stringiamo un patto io e te; il Signore sia testimonio tra me e te".
45 Then Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial stone.	45 Giacobbe prese una pietra e la eresse come stele.
46 Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather some stones." So they got some stones and made a mound; and they had a meal there at the mound.	46 Poi disse ai suoi fratelli: "Raccogliete pietre!". Quelli presero pietre e ne fecero un mucchio, poi mangiarono su quel mucchio.
47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob named it Galeed.	47 Làbano lo chiamò Iegar-Saaduta, mentre Giacobbe lo chiamò Gal-Ed.
48 "This mound," said Laban, "shall be a witness from now on between you and me." That is why it was named Galeed--	48 Làbano disse: "Questo mucchio sia oggi un testimonio tra me e te". Per questo fu chiamato Gal-Ed
49 and also Mizpah, for he said: "May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are out of each other's sight.	49 e anche Mizpa, perché disse: "Il Signore starà come vedetta tra me e te, quando noi non ci vedremo più l'un l'altro.
50 If you mistreat my daughters, or take other wives besides my daughters, remember that even though no one else is about, God will be witness between you and me."	50 Se tu maltratterai le mie figlie o se prenderai altre mogli oltre le mie figlie, non un uomo sarà con noi, ma Dio sarà testimonio tra me e te".
51 Laban said further to Jacob: "Here is this mound, and here is the memorial stone that I have set up between you and me.	51 Soggiunse Làbano a Giacobbe: "Ecco questo mucchio ed ecco questa stele sacra che io ho eretto tra me e te;
52 This mound shall be witness, and this memorial stone shall be witness, that, with hostile intent, neither may I pass beyond this mound into your territory, nor may you pass beyond it into mine.	52 questo mucchio è testimone e questa stele sacra è testimone che io giuro di non oltrepassare questo mucchio dalla tua parte e che tu giuri di non oltrepassare questo mucchio e questa stele dalla mia parte, per fare del male.
53 May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor (their ancestral deities) maintain justice between us!" Jacob took the oath by the Awesome One of Isaac.	53 Il Dio di Abramo e il Dio di Nacor giudichino tra noi". Giacobbe giurò per il Terrore di suo padre Isacco.
54 He then offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to share in the meal. When they had eaten, they passed the night on the mountain.	54 Poi Giacobbe offrì un sacrificio sulla montagna e invitò i suoi fratelli a prender cibo. Essi mangiarono e passarono la notte sulla montagna.
