Genesis 31

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, "Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father, and he has accumulated all this wealth of his by using our father's property."	1 Jacob apprit que les fils de Laban disaient: "Jacob a pris tout ce qui était à notre père et c'est auxdépens de notre père qu'il a constitué toute cette richesse."
2 Jacob perceived, too, that Laban's attitude toward him was not what it had previously been.	2 Jacob vit à la mine de Laban qu'il n'était plus avec lui comme auparavant.
3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers, where you were born, and I will be with you."	3 Yahvé dit à Jacob: "Retourne au pays de tes pères, dans ta patrie, et je serai avec toi."
4 So Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah to meet him where he was in the field with his flock.	4 Jacob fit appeler Rachel et Léa aux champs où étaient ses troupeaux,
5 There he said to them: "I have noticed that your father's attitude toward me is not as it was in the past; but the God of my father has been with me.	5 et il leur dit: "Je vois à la mine de votre père qu'il n'est plus à mon égard comme auparavant, maisle Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.
6 You well know what effort I put into serving your father;	6 Vous savez vous-mêmes que j'ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces.
7 yet your father cheated me and changed my wages time after time. God, however, did not let him do me any harm.	7 Votre père s'est joué de moi, il a changé dix fois mon salaire, mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de mefaire du tort.
8 Whenever your father said, 'The speckled animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear speckled young; whenever he said, 'The streaked animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear streaked young.	8 Chaque fois qu'il disait: Ce qui est moucheté sera ton salaire, toutes les bêtes mettaient bas despetits mouchetés; chaque fois qu'il disait: Ce qui est rayé sera ton salaire, toutes les bêtes mettaient bas des petitsrayés,
9 Thus God reclaimed your father's livestock and gave it to me.	9 et Dieu a enlevé son bétail à votre père et me l'a donné.
10 Once, in the breeding season, I had a dream in which I saw mating he-goats that were streaked, speckled and mottled.	10 Il arriva, au temps où les bêtes entrent en chaleur, que je levai les yeux et je vis en songe que lesboucs en passe de saillir les bêtes étaient rayés, tachetés ou tavelés.
11 In the dream God's messenger called to me, 'Jacob!' 'Here!' I replied.	11 L'Ange de Dieu me dit en songe: Jacob, et je répondis: Oui.
12 Then he said: 'Note well. All the he-goats in the flock, as they mate, are streaked, speckled and mottled, for I have seen all the things that Laban has been doing to you.	12 Il dit: Lève les yeux et vois: tous les boucs qui saillissent les bêtes sont rayés, tachetés ou tavelés,car j'ai vu tout ce que Laban te fait.
13 I am the God who appeared to you in Bethel, where you anointed a memorial stone and made a vow to me. Up, then! Leave this land and return to the land of your birth.'"	13 Je suis le Dieu qui t'est apparu à Béthel, où tu as oint une stèle et où tu m'as fait un vœu.Maintenant debout, sors de ce pays et retourne dans ta patrie."
14 Rachel and Leah answered him: "Have we still an heir's portion in our father's house?	14 Rachel et Léa lui répondirent ainsi: "Avons-nous encore une part et un héritage dans la maison denotre père?
15 Are we not regarded by him as outsiders? He not only sold us; he has even used up the money that he got for us!	15 Ne sommes-nous pas considérées par lui comme des étrangères, puisqu'il nous a vendues et qu'il aensuite mangé notre argent?
16 All the wealth that God reclaimed from our father really belongs to us and our children. Therefore, do just as God has told you."	16 Oui, toute la richesse que Dieu a retirée à notre père est à nous et à nos enfants. Fais doncmaintenant tout ce que Dieu t'a dit."
17 Jacob proceeded to put his children and wives on camels,	17 Jacob se leva, fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur des chameaux,
18 and he drove off with all his livestock and all the property he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.	18 et poussa devant lui tout son bétail, -- avec tous les biens qu'il avait acquis, le bétail qui luiappartenait et qu'il avait acquis en Paddân-Aram, -- pour aller chez son père Isaac, au pays de Canaan.
19 Now Laban had gone away to shear his sheep, and Rachel had meanwhile appropriated her father's household idols.	19 Laban était allé tondre son troupeau et Rachel déroba les idoles domestiques qui étaient à sonpère.
20 Jacob had hoodwinked Laban the Aramean by not telling him of his intended flight.	20 Jacob abusa l'esprit de Laban l'Araméen en ne lui laissant pas soupçonner qu'il fuyait.
21 Thus he made his escape with all that he had. Once he was across the Euphrates, he headed for the highlands of Gilead.	21 Il s'enfuit avec tout ce qu'il avait, il partit, passa le Fleuve et se dirigea vers le mont Galaad.
22 On the third day, word came to Laban that Jacob had fled.	22 Le troisième jour, on apprit à Laban que Jacob s'était enfui.
23 Taking his kinsmen with him, he pursued him for seven days until he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.	23 Il prit ses frères avec lui, le poursuivit sept jours de chemin et l'atteignit au mont Galaad.
24 But that night God appeared to Laban the Aramean in a dream and warned him, "Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!"	24 Dieu visita Laban l'Araméen dans une vision nocturne et lui dit: "Garde-toi de dire à Jacob quoique ce soit."
25 When Laban overtook Jacob, Jacob's tents were pitched in the highlands; Laban also pitched his tents there, on Mount Gilead.	25 Laban rejoignit Jacob qui avait planté sa tente dans la montagne, et Laban planta sa tente au montGalaad.
26 "What do you mean," Laban demanded of Jacob, "by hoodwinking me and carrying off my daughters like war captives?	26 Laban dit à Jacob: "Qu'as-tu fait d'abuser mon esprit et d'emmener mes filles comme des captivesde guerre?
27 Why did you dupe me by stealing away secretly? You should have told me, and I would have sent you off with merry singing to the sound of tambourines and harps.	27 Pourquoi as-tu fui en secret et m'as-tu abusé au lieu de m'avertir, pour que je te reconduise dansl'allégresse et les chants, avec tambourins et lyres?
28 You did not even allow me a parting kiss to my daughters and grandchildren! What you have now done is a senseless thing.	28 Tu ne m'as pas laissé embrasser mes fils et mes filles. Vraiment, tu as agi en insensé!
29 I have it in my power to harm all of you; but last night the God of your father said to me, 'Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!'	29 Il serait en mon pouvoir de te faire du mal, mais le Dieu de ton père, la nuit passée, m'a dit ceci:Garde-toi de dire à Jacob quoi que ce soit.
30 Granted that you had to leave because you were desperately homesick for your father's house, why did you steal my gods?"	30 Maintenant, tu es donc parti, parce que tu languissais tellement après la maison de ton père! Maispourquoi as-tu volé mes dieux?"
31 "I was frightened," Jacob replied to Laban, "at the thought that you might take your daughters away from me by force.	31 Jacob répondit ainsi à Laban: "J'ai eu peur, je me suis dit que tu allais m'enlever tes filles.
32 But as for your gods, the one you find them with shall not remain alive! If, with my kinsmen looking on, you identify anything here as belonging to you, take it." Jacob, of course, had no idea that Rachel had stolen the idols.	32 Mais celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux ne restera pas vivant: devant nos frères, reconnais cequi est à toi chez moi, et prends-le." Jacob ignorait en effet que Rachel les avait dérobés.
33 Laban then went in and searched Jacob's tent and Leah's tent, as well as the tents of the two maidservants; but he did not find the idols. Leaving Leah's tent, he went into Rachel's.	33 Laban alla chercher dans la tente de Jacob, puis dans la tente de Léa, puis dans la tente des deuxservantes, et il ne trouva rien. Il sortit de la tente de Léa et entra dans celle de Rachel.
34 Now Rachel had taken the idols, put them inside a camel cushion, and seated herself upon them. When Laban had rummaged through the rest of her tent without finding them,	34 Or Rachel avait pris les idoles domestiques, les avait mises dans le palanquin du chameau ets'était assise dessus; Laban fouilla toute la tente et ne trouva rien.
35 Rachel said to her father, "Let not my lord feel offended that I cannot rise in your presence; a woman's period is upon me." So, despite his search, he did not find his idols.	35 Rachel dit à son père: "Que Monseigneur ne voie pas avec colère que je ne puisse me lever en taprésence, car j'ai ce qui est coutumier aux femmes." Laban chercha et ne trouva pas les idoles.
36 Jacob, now enraged, upbraided Laban. "What crime or offense have I committed," he demanded, "that you should hound me so fiercely?	36 Jacob se mit en colère et prit à partie Laban. Et Jacob adressa ainsi la parole à Laban: "Quel estmon crime, quelle est ma faute, que tu te sois acharné après moi?
37 Now that you have ransacked all my things, have you found a single object taken from your belongings? If so, produce it here before your kinsmen and mine, and let them decide between us two.	37 Tu as fouillé toutes mes affaires: as-tu rien trouvé de toutes les affaires de ta maison? Produis-leici, devant mes frères et tes frères, et qu'ils jugent entre nous deux!
38 "In the twenty years that I was under you, no ewe or she-goat of yours ever miscarried, and I have never feasted on a ram of your flock.	38 Voici vingt ans que je suis chez toi, tes brebis et tes chèvres n'ont pas avorté et je n'ai pas mangéles béliers de ton troupeau.
39 I never brought you an animal torn by wild beasts; I made good the loss myself. You held me responsible for anything stolen by day or night.	39 Les animaux déchirés par les fauves, je ne les rapportais pas, c'était moi qui compensais leurperte; tu me les réclamais, que j'aie été volé de jour ou que j'aie été volé de nuit.
40 How often the scorching heat ravaged me by day, and the frost by night, while sleep fled from my eyes!	40 J'ai été dévoré par la chaleur pendant le jour, par le froid pendant la nuit, et le sommeil a fui mesyeux.
41 Of the twenty years that I have now spent in your household, I slaved fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, while you changed my wages time after time.	41 Voici vingt ans que je suis dans ta maison: je t'ai servi quatorze ans pour tes deux filles et six anspour ton troupeau, et tu as changé dix fois mon salaire.
42 If my ancestral God, the God of Abraham and the Awesome One of Isaac, had not been on my side, you would now have sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and the fruits of my toil, and last night he gave judgment."	42 Si le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d'Abraham, le Parent d'Isaac, n'avait pas été avec moi, tu m'auraisrenvoyé les mains vides. Mais Dieu a vu mes fatigues et le labeur de mes bras et, la nuit passée, il a rendu sonjugement."
43 Laban replied to Jacob: "The women are mine, their children are mine, and the flocks are mine; everything you see belongs to me. But since these women are my daughters, I will now do something for them and for the children they have borne.	43 Laban répondit ainsi à Jacob: "Ces filles sont mes filles, ces enfants sont mes enfants, ce bétail estmon bétail, tout ce que tu vois est à moi. Mais que pourrais-je faire aujourd'hui à mes filles que voici et auxenfants qu'elles ont mis au monde?
44 Come, then, we will make a pact, you and I; the LORD shall be a witness between us."	44 Allons, concluons un traité, moi et toi..., et que cela serve de témoin entre moi et toi."
45 Then Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial stone.	45 Alors Jacob prit une pierre et la dressa comme une stèle.
46 Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather some stones." So they got some stones and made a mound; and they had a meal there at the mound.	46 Et Jacob dit à ses frères: "Ramassez des pierres." Ils ramassèrent des pierres et en firent unmonceau et ils mangèrent là, sur le monceau.
47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob named it Galeed.	47 Laban le nomma Yegar Sahadûta et Jacob le nomma Galéed.
48 "This mound," said Laban, "shall be a witness from now on between you and me." That is why it was named Galeed--	48 Laban dit: "Que ce monceau soit aujourd'hui un témoin entre moi et toi." C'est pourquoi il lenomma Galéed,
49 and also Mizpah, for he said: "May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are out of each other's sight.	49 et Miçpa, parce qu'il dit: "Que Yahvé soit un guetteur entre moi et toi, quand nous ne serons plusen vue l'un de l'autre.
50 If you mistreat my daughters, or take other wives besides my daughters, remember that even though no one else is about, God will be witness between you and me."	50 Si tu maltraites mes filles ou si tu prends d'autres femmes en sus de mes filles, et que personne nesoit avec nous, vois:Dieu est témoin entre moi et toi."
51 Laban said further to Jacob: "Here is this mound, and here is the memorial stone that I have set up between you and me.	51 Et Laban dit à Jacob: "Voici ce monceau que j'ai entassé entre moi et toi, et voici la stèle.
52 This mound shall be witness, and this memorial stone shall be witness, that, with hostile intent, neither may I pass beyond this mound into your territory, nor may you pass beyond it into mine.	52 Ce monceau est témoin, la stèle est témoin, que moi je ne dois pas dépasser ce monceau vers toi etque toi tu ne dois pas dépasser ce monceau et cette stèle, vers moi, avec de mauvaises intentions.
53 May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor (their ancestral deities) maintain justice between us!" Jacob took the oath by the Awesome One of Isaac.	53 Que le Dieu d'Abraham et le Dieu de Nahor jugent entre nous."Et Jacob prêta serment par leParent d'Isaac, son père.
54 He then offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to share in the meal. When they had eaten, they passed the night on the mountain.	54 Jacob fit un sacrifice sur la montagne et invita ses frères au repas. Ils prirent le repas et passèrentla nuit sur la montagne.
