Genesis 31

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Jacob learned that Laban's sons were saying, "Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father, and he has accumulated all this wealth of his by using our father's property."	1 Jacob se enteró de que los hijos de Labán andaban diciendo: «Jacob se ha apoderado de todos los bienes de nuestro padre, y a expensas de él ha conseguido toda esta riqueza».
2 Jacob perceived, too, that Laban's attitude toward him was not what it had previously been.	2 Y también advirtió que la actitud de Labán para con él ya no era la misma de antes.
3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers, where you were born, and I will be with you."	3 Entonces el Señor le dijo: «Vuelve a la tierra de tus padres y de tu familia, y yo estaré contigo».
4 So Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah to meet him where he was in the field with his flock.	4 Jacob mandó llamar a Raquel y a Lía para que fueran a encontrarse con él en el campo donde estaba el rebaño,
5 There he said to them: "I have noticed that your father's attitude toward me is not as it was in the past; but the God of my father has been with me.	5 y le dijo: «He advertido que el padre de ustedes ya no se comporta conmigo como antes, pero el Dios de mi padre ha estado conmigo.
6 You well know what effort I put into serving your father;	6 Ustedes saben muy bien que yo puse todo mi empeño en servir a mi suegro.
7 yet your father cheated me and changed my wages time after time. God, however, did not let him do me any harm.	7 Sin embargo, él se ha burlado de mí y ha cambiado diez veces mi salario. Pero Dios no le ha permitido que me hiciera ningún mal.
8 Whenever your father said, 'The speckled animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear speckled young; whenever he said, 'The streaked animals shall be your wages,' the entire flock would bear streaked young.	8 Si él establecía: «Los animales manchados serán tu salario», todo el rebaño tenía crías manchadas; y si él decía: «Los animales rayados serán tu paga», todo el rebaño tenía crías rayadas.
9 Thus God reclaimed your father's livestock and gave it to me.	9 Así Dios lo despojó de su ganado y me lo dio a mí.
10 Once, in the breeding season, I had a dream in which I saw mating he-goats that were streaked, speckled and mottled.	10 Una vez, durante el período en que el rebaño entra en celo, yo tuve un sueño. De pronto vi que los chivos que cubrían a las cabras eran rayados, manchados o moteados.
11 In the dream God's messenger called to me, 'Jacob!' 'Here!' I replied.	11 Y en el sueño, el Angel de Dios me llamó: «¡Jacob!». «Aquí estoy», le respondí.
12 Then he said: 'Note well. All the he-goats in the flock, as they mate, are streaked, speckled and mottled, for I have seen all the things that Laban has been doing to you.	12 Entonces él me dijo: Fíjate bien: todos los chivos que cubren a las cabras son rayados, manchados o moteados, porque yo me he dado cuenta de todo lo que te hizo Labán.
13 I am the God who appeared to you in Bethel, where you anointed a memorial stone and made a vow to me. Up, then! Leave this land and return to the land of your birth.'"	13 Yo soy el Dios que se te apareció en Betel, allí donde tú ungiste una piedra conmemorativa y me hiciste un voto. Ahora levántate, sal de este país, y regresa a tu tierra natal».
14 Rachel and Leah answered him: "Have we still an heir's portion in our father's house?	14 Raquel y Lía le respondieron diciendo: «¿Tenemos todavía una parte y una herencia en la casa de nuestro padre?
15 Are we not regarded by him as outsiders? He not only sold us; he has even used up the money that he got for us!	15 ¿Acaso no nos ha tratado como a extrañas? No sólo nos ha vendido, sino que además se ha gastado el dinero que recibió de nosotras.
16 All the wealth that God reclaimed from our father really belongs to us and our children. Therefore, do just as God has told you."	16 Sí, toda la riqueza que Dios le ha quitado a nuestro padre es nuestra y de nuestros hijos. Procede como Dios te lo ha ordenado».
17 Jacob proceeded to put his children and wives on camels,	17 Inmediatamente Jacob hizo montar en los camellos a sus hijos y a sus mujeres,
18 and he drove off with all his livestock and all the property he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.	18 y se llevó todo su ganado y todos sus bienes –el ganado de su propiedad, que había adquirido en Padán Aram– para ir a la tierra de Canaán, donde se encontraba Isaac, su padre.
19 Now Laban had gone away to shear his sheep, and Rachel had meanwhile appropriated her father's household idols.	19 Como Labán estaba ausente, esquilando sus ovejas, Raquel se adueñó de los ídolos familiares que pertenecían a su padre.
20 Jacob had hoodwinked Laban the Aramean by not telling him of his intended flight.	20 Y Jacob engañó a Labán, el arameo, porque huyó sin decirle una palabra.
21 Thus he made his escape with all that he had. Once he was across the Euphrates, he headed for the highlands of Gilead.	21 Así escapó Jacob con todo lo que tenía, y apenas estuvo al otro lado del Eufrates, se dirigió hacia la montaña de Galaad.
22 On the third day, word came to Laban that Jacob had fled.	22 Al tercer día notificaron a Labán que Jacob había huido.
23 Taking his kinsmen with him, he pursued him for seven days until he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.	23 Labán reunió a sus parientes y lo persiguió durante siete días, hasta que al fin lo alcanzó en la montaña de Galaad.
24 But that night God appeared to Laban the Aramean in a dream and warned him, "Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!"	24 Pero esa misma noche, Dios se apareció en sueños a Labán, el arameo, y le dijo: «Cuidado con entrometerse para nada en los asuntos de Jacob».
25 When Laban overtook Jacob, Jacob's tents were pitched in the highlands; Laban also pitched his tents there, on Mount Gilead.	25 Cuando Labán alcanzó a Jacob, este había instalado su campamento en la montaña. Labán, por su parte, acampó en la montaña de Galaad.
26 "What do you mean," Laban demanded of Jacob, "by hoodwinking me and carrying off my daughters like war captives?	26 Labán dijo entonces a Jacob: «¿Qué has hecho? ¡Me has engañado y te has llevado a mis hijas como prisioneras de guerra!
27 Why did you dupe me by stealing away secretly? You should have told me, and I would have sent you off with merry singing to the sound of tambourines and harps.	27 ¿Por qué has huido ocultamente y me has engañado? Si me hubieras avisado, yo te habría despedido con una fiesta, con cantos y con música de tambores y liras.
28 You did not even allow me a parting kiss to my daughters and grandchildren! What you have now done is a senseless thing.	28 Pero tú ni siquiera me has permitido saludar con un beso a mis nietos y a mis hijas. Realmente te has comportado como un insensato.
29 I have it in my power to harm all of you; but last night the God of your father said to me, 'Take care not to threaten Jacob with any harm!'	29 Yo tengo poder suficiente para hacerles una mala jugada a todos ustedes. Sin embargo, ayer por la noche, el Dios de tu padre me dijo: «Cuidado con entrometerte para nada en los asuntos de Jacob».
30 Granted that you had to leave because you were desperately homesick for your father's house, why did you steal my gods?"	30 De todas maneras, está bien: tú te has ido porque añorabas tu casa paterna. Pero ¿por qué robaste mis dioses?».
31 "I was frightened," Jacob replied to Laban, "at the thought that you might take your daughters away from me by force.	31 «Yo estaba atemorizado, respondió Jacob a Labán, pensando que podías quitarme a tus hijas.
32 But as for your gods, the one you find them with shall not remain alive! If, with my kinsmen looking on, you identify anything here as belonging to you, take it." Jacob, of course, had no idea that Rachel had stolen the idols.	32 Y en lo que respecta a tus dioses, si llegas a encontrarlos en poder de alguno de nosotros, ese no quedará con vida. Revisa bien, en presencia de nuestros hermanos, a ver si hay aquí algo que te pertenece, y llévatelo». Por supuesto, Jacob ignoraba que Raquel los había robado.
33 Laban then went in and searched Jacob's tent and Leah's tent, as well as the tents of the two maidservants; but he did not find the idols. Leaving Leah's tent, he went into Rachel's.	33 Labán entró en la carpa de Jacob, en la de Lía, y en la de las dos esclavas, y no encontró nada. Al salir de la carpa de Lía, entró en la de Raquel.
34 Now Rachel had taken the idols, put them inside a camel cushion, and seated herself upon them. When Laban had rummaged through the rest of her tent without finding them,	34 Pero Raquel había tomado los ídolos, los había guardado en la montura del camello y se había sentado encima de ellos. Después que Labán registró toda la carpa sin obtener ningún resultado,
35 Rachel said to her father, "Let not my lord feel offended that I cannot rise in your presence; a woman's period is upon me." So, despite his search, he did not find his idols.	35 Raquel dijo a su padre: «Que mi señor no lo tome a mal; pero no puedo ponerme de pie ante él, porque me sucede lo que es habitual en las mujeres». Y por más que buscó, no logró encontrar los ídolos.
36 Jacob, now enraged, upbraided Laban. "What crime or offense have I committed," he demanded, "that you should hound me so fiercely?	36 Jacob se llenó de indignación, y reprochó a Labán diciéndole: «¿Qué delito o falta he cometido para que me acoses de esa manera?
37 Now that you have ransacked all my things, have you found a single object taken from your belongings? If so, produce it here before your kinsmen and mine, and let them decide between us two.	37 Acabas de registrar todas mis cosas y no has encontrado un solo objeto que te pertenezca. Si lo has encontrado, colócalo aquí, delante de tu gente y de la mía, y que ellos decidan quién de nosotros tiene razón.
38 "In the twenty years that I was under you, no ewe or she-goat of yours ever miscarried, and I have never feasted on a ram of your flock.	38 En los veinte años que estuve contigo, tus ovejas y tus cabras nunca abortaron, y jamás me comí los carneros de tu rebaño.
39 I never brought you an animal torn by wild beasts; I made good the loss myself. You held me responsible for anything stolen by day or night.	39 Nunca te llevé un animal despedazado por las fieras: yo mismo debía reparar la pérdida, porque tú me reclamabas lo que había sido robado tanto de día como de noche.
40 How often the scorching heat ravaged me by day, and the frost by night, while sleep fled from my eyes!	40 De día me consumía el calor, y de noche, la helada; y el sueño huía de mis ojos.
41 Of the twenty years that I have now spent in your household, I slaved fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, while you changed my wages time after time.	41 De los veinte años que pasé en tu casa, catorce trabajé por tus dos hijas, y seis por tu rebaño, y tú me cambiaste el salario diez veces.
42 If my ancestral God, the God of Abraham and the Awesome One of Isaac, had not been on my side, you would now have sent me away empty-handed. But God saw my plight and the fruits of my toil, and last night he gave judgment."	42 Y si el Dios de mi padre –el Dios de Abraham y el Terror de Isaac– no hubiera estado de mi parte, me habrías despedido con las manos vacías. Pero Dios ha visto mi opresión y mi fatiga, y ayer por la noche pronunció su fallo».
43 Laban replied to Jacob: "The women are mine, their children are mine, and the flocks are mine; everything you see belongs to me. But since these women are my daughters, I will now do something for them and for the children they have borne.	43 Labán replicó a Jacob: «Estas mujeres son mis hijas, y estos muchachos, mis nietos; y también es mío el rebaño. Todo lo que ves me pertenece. Pero ¿qué puedo hacer ahora contra mis hijas y mis nietos?
44 Come, then, we will make a pact, you and I; the LORD shall be a witness between us."	44 Por eso, hagamos una alianza, y que haya un testigo entre tú y yo».
45 Then Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial stone.	45 Entonces Jacob tomó una piedra y la erigió como piedra conmemorativa.
46 Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather some stones." So they got some stones and made a mound; and they had a meal there at the mound.	46 Labán por su parte, dijo a sus hermanos: «Recojan unas piedras». Ellos las recogieron, las amontonaron y comieron allí, sobre el montón de piedras.
47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob named it Galeed.	47 Y Labán le puso el nombre de Iegar Sahadutá, mientras que Jacob lo llamó Galed.
48 "This mound," said Laban, "shall be a witness from now on between you and me." That is why it was named Galeed--	48 Después Labán declaró: «Este montón de piedras será siempre un testigo entre tú y yo, como lo es ahora». Por eso lo llamó Galed.
49 and also Mizpah, for he said: "May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are out of each other's sight.	49 Además, le puso el nombre de Mispá, porque dijo: «Que el Señor nos vigile a los dos, cuando estemos lejos el uno del otro:
50 If you mistreat my daughters, or take other wives besides my daughters, remember that even though no one else is about, God will be witness between you and me."	50 si tú maltratas a mis hijas o te unes a otras mujeres además de ellas –aunque no haya nadie entre nosotros– recuerda que Dios está como testigo entre tú y yo».
51 Laban said further to Jacob: "Here is this mound, and here is the memorial stone that I have set up between you and me.	51 Luego añadió: «Mira este montón de piedras, y mira la piedra conmemorativa que yo erigí entre tú y yo:
52 This mound shall be witness, and this memorial stone shall be witness, that, with hostile intent, neither may I pass beyond this mound into your territory, nor may you pass beyond it into mine.	52 una y otra cosa serán testigos de que ninguno de los dos iremos más allá de este montón de piedras y de esta piedra conmemorativa, con malas intenciones.
53 May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor (their ancestral deities) maintain justice between us!" Jacob took the oath by the Awesome One of Isaac.	53 Que el Dios de Abraham y el Dios de Najor sea nuestro juez». Entonces Jacob prestó un juramento por el Terror de Isaac.
54 He then offered a sacrifice on the mountain and invited his kinsmen to share in the meal. When they had eaten, they passed the night on the mountain.	54 Luego ofreció un sacrificio sobre la Montaña, e invitó a sus hermanos a participar del banquete. Ellos comieron y pasaron la noche en la Montaña.
