1 Ma Sophar di Naamath rispose, e disse:	1 Zophar of Naamath spoke next. He said:
2 Forse colui, che mollo discorre non avrà ancor da ascoltare? Od un gran parlatore sarà dichiarato giusto?	2 Is babbling to go without an answer? Is wordiness a proof of uprightness?
3 Tu solo farai tacer gli uomini? E dopo avere scherniti gli altri da nissuno sarai confutato?	3 Do you think your talking strikes people dumb, will you jeer with no one to refute you?
4 Perocché tu hai detto: La mia dottrina è pura, ed io son mondo negli occhi tuoi.	4 These were your words, 'My conduct is pure, in your eyes I am free of blame!'
5 Cosi volesse Dio parlare egli con te, e aprir con te la sua bocca:	5 Wil no one let God speak, open his lips and give you answer,
6 Per svelarti i segreti di sua sapienza, e come moltiplice è la sua legge, onde tu comprendessi come molto meno egli esige da te di quel, che si meriti la tua ingiustizia.	6 show you the secrets of wisdom which put all cleverness to shame? Then you would realise that Godis cal ing you to account for your sin.
7 Forse tu scoprirai gli andamenti di Dio, e intenderai perfettamente l'Onnipotente?	7 Can you claim to fathom the depth of God, can you reach the limit of Shaddai?
8 Egli è più alto del cielo, e che farai tu? egli è più profondo che non è l'inferno, e come potrai conoscerlo?	8 It is higher than the heavens: what can you do? It is deeper than Sheol: what can you know?
9 Egli è di misura più estesa, che non è la terra, e più ampio del mare.	9 It would be longer to measure than the earth and broader than the sea.
10 S'ei metterà sossopra tutte le cose, o le confonderà tutte insieme, chi a lui si opporrà?	10 If he intervenes to close or convoke the assembly, who is to prevent him?
11 Or ei conosce la vanità de'mortali, e veggendo la loro iniquità non ne farà egli conto?	11 He knows how deceptive human beings are, and he sees their misdeeds too, and marks them wel .
12 L'uomo stolto si leva in superbia, e qual asinello salvatico si crede nato per non aver freno.	12 Hence empty-headed people would do wel to study sense and people who behave like wild donkeysto let themselves be tamed.
13 Ma tu ti se' indurato in cuor tuo, ed hai stese le mani verso di lui.	13 Come, reconsider your attitude, stretch out your hands towards him!
14 Se rimoverai da te l'iniquità delle tue mani, e se scevra d'ingiustizia rimarrà la tua casa:	14 If you repudiate the sin which you have doubtless committed and do not al ow wickedness to live onin your tents,
15 Allora essendo senza macola potrai alzar la tua faccia, ed avrai fermo stato senza timori.	15 you wil be able to raise an unsullied face, unwavering and free from fear,
16 E ti scorderai della tua stessa miseria, o te ne ricorderai, come di una piena di acque che già passarono.	16 for you wil forget about your misery, thinking of it only as a flood that passed long ago.
17 E spunterà a te sulla sera una luce, come di mezzogiorno, e quando ti crederai distrutto sorgerai, come la stella della mattina.	17 Then begins an existence more radiant than noon, and the very darkness wil be bright as morning.
18 E nella tua espettazione riporrai e tua fidanza, e sepolto dormirai tranquillamente.	18 Confident because there is hope; after your troubles, you wil sleep secure.
19 Riposerai, e non sarà chi ti rechi, terrore, e moltissimi a te porgeranno preghiere.	19 When you lie down to rest, no one will trouble you, and many wil seek your favour.
20 Ma si seccheranno gli occhi degli empj, i quali non troveranno scampo; e le loro speranze saranno in abominio all'anima loro.	20 But as for the wicked, their eyes are weary, there is no refuge for them; their only hope is to breathetheir last.
