1 Frattanto la fame vessava crudelmente tutta la terra.	1 Now the famine in the land grew more severe.
2 E consumati i viveri, che aveano portati d'Egitto, disse Giacobbe a' suoi figli: Tornate a comprarci qualche poco da mangiare.	2 So when they had used up all the rations they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, "Go back and procure us a little more food."
3 Rispose Giuda: Quell'uomo c'intimò con giuramento, dicendo: Non vedrete la mia faccia, se non menate con voi il fratello vostro più piccolo.	3 But Judah replied: "The man strictly warned us, 'You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'
4 Se adunque tu vuoi mandarlo con noi, anderemo insieme, e compreremo quello che ti bisogna:	4 If you are willing to let our brother go with us, we will go down to procure food for you.
5 Se tu non vuoi, non andremo: perché quell'uomo, come abbiam detto più volte, ci ha intimato, e ha detto: Non vedrete la mia faccia senza il fratello vostro più piccolo.	5 But if you are not willing, we will not go down, because the man told us, 'You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'"
6 Disse a lui Israele: Per mia sventura avete fatto sapere a colui, che avevate ancora un altro fratello.	6 Israel demanded, "Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man that you had another brother?"
7 Ma quelli risposero: Quell'uomo c'interrogò per ordine intorno a tutta la nostra stirpe: se il padre era vivo: se avevamo altro fratello; e noi gli rispondevamo a tenore delle sue ricerche: potevamo noi sapere, ch'ei fosse per dire: Conducete con voi il vostro fratello?	7 They answered: "The man kept asking about ourselves and our family: 'Is your father still living? Do you have another brother?' We had to answer his questions. How could we know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down here'?"
8 Disse ancor Giuda a suo padre: Manda con me il fanciullo, affinché partiamo, e possiamo salvar la vita, e non muoiamo noi, e i nostri pargoletti.	8 Then Judah urged his father Israel: "Let the boy go with me, that we may be off and on our way if you and we and our children are to keep from starving to death.
9 Io entro mallevadore pel fanciullo: fammene render conto: s'io nol riconduco, e nol rendo a te, sarò per sempre reo di peccato contro di te.	9 I myself will stand surety for him. You can hold me responsible for him. If I fail to bring him back, to set him in your presence, you can hold it against me forever.
10 Se non fossimo stati a bada, saremmo già ritornati la seconda volta.	10 Had we not dilly-dallied, we could have been there and back twice by now!"
11 Disse adunque ad essi il padre loro Israele: Se bisogna così, fate quel che volete: prendete ne' vostri vasi de' frutti più lodati di questo paese; e portategli in dono a quell'uomo, un po' di resina, e di miele, e dello storace, e della mirra, e del terebinto, e delle mandorle.	11 Their father Israel then told them: "If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the land's best products in your baggage and take them down to the man as gifts: some balm and honey, gum and resin, and pistachios and almonds.
12 Portate anche con voi il doppio del denaro; e riportate quello che avete trovato ne' sacchi, che forse non sia stato sbaglio.	12 Also take extra money along, for you must return the amount that was put back in the mouths of your bags; it may have been a mistake.
13 Ma prendete ancora il vostro fratello, e andate a trovar quell'uomo.	13 Take your brother, too, and be off on your way back to the man.
14 E il mio Dio onnipotente vel renda propizio, e rimandi con voi quel vostro fratello, che ha nelle mani, e questo Beniamin. Io poi sarò come uomo rimaso privo di figliuoli.	14 May God Almighty dispose the man to be merciful toward you, so that he may let your other brother go, as well as Benjamin. As for me, if I am to suffer bereavement, I shall suffer it."
15 Presero adunque quegli i doni, e il doppio del denaro, e Beniamin, e calarono in Egitto, e si presentarono a Giuseppe.	15 So the men got the gifts, took double the amount of money with them, and, accompanied by Benjamin, were off on their way down to Egypt to present themselves to Joseph.
16 E quegli avendogli veduti, e insieme con essi Beniamin, diede ordine al suo maestro di casa, dicendo: Conduci costoro in casa, e uccidi le vittime, e prepara il convito: perocché questi mangeranno a mezzogiorno con me.	16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he told his head steward, "Take these men into the house, and have an animal slaughtered and prepared, for they are to dine with me at noon."
17 Fece egli quello che gli era stato imposto, e condusse coloro dentro la casa.	17 Doing as Joseph had ordered, the steward conducted the men to Joseph's house.
18 Ed ivi pieni di paura dicean tra di loro: Per ragion del denaro, che riportammo già ne' nostri sacchi, siam condotti qua dentro: volendo egli aggravarci con questa calunnia per ridurre violentemente in ischiavitù noi, e i nostri asini.	18 But on being led to his house, they became apprehensive. "It must be," they thought, "on account of the money put back in our bags the first time, that we are taken inside; they want to use it as a pretext to attack us and take our donkeys and seize us as slaves."
19 Per la qual cosa sulla stessa porta si accostarono al maestro di casa,	19 So they went up to Joseph's head steward and talked to him at the entrance of the house.
20 E dissero: Ti preghiamo, signore, che ci ascolti. Siam già venuti altra volta a comprar da vivere:	20 "If you please, sir," they said, "we came down here once before to procure food.
21 E compratone, giunti che fummo allo albergo aprimmo i nostri sacchi, e trovammo il denaro alla bocca dei sacchi, il quale abbiamo ora riportato dello stesso peso.	21 But when we arrived at a night's encampment and opened our bags, there was each man's money in the mouth of his bag--our money in the full amount! We have now brought it back.
22 E abbiamo ancor portato altro denaro per comprare quello che ci bisogna: noi non sappiamo chi rimettesse quello nelle nostre borse.	22 We have brought other money to procure food with. We do not know who put the first money in our bags."
23 Ma quegli rispose: Pace con voi, non temete: il vostro Dio, e il Dio del padre vostro ha posti que' tesori ne' vostri sacchi, perocché il denaro, che deste a me, lo ho io in buona moneta. E condussegli a veder Simeone.	23 "Be at ease," he replied; "you have no need to fear. Your God and the God of your father must have put treasures in your bags for you. As for your money, I received it." With that, he led Simeon out to them.
24 Ed entrati che furono nella casa, portò dell'acqua, e lavarono i loro piedi, e diede da mangiare a' loro asini.	24 The steward then brought the men inside Joseph's house. He gave them water to bathe their feet, and got fodder for their donkeys.
25 Ed eglino approntavano i regali, per quando fosse venuto Giuseppe a mezzo giorno: perocché avevano udito, come ivi doveano mangiare.	25 Then they set out their gifts to await Joseph's arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were to dine there.
26 Entrò dunque Giuseppe in casa sua, e quelli offerirono a lui i doni, presentandoli colle loro mani, e lo adorarono inchinandosi fino a terra.	26 When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought inside, while they bowed down before him to the ground.
27 Ma egli, renduto loro benignamente il saluto, gl'interrogò dicendo: Il vecchio padre vostro, di cui mi parlaste, è egli sano? vive egli ancora?	27 After inquiring how they were, he asked them, "And how is your aged father, of whom you spoke? Is he still in good health?"
28 Risposero: Sta bene il tuo servo il padre nostro; ei vive tuttora. E incurvatisi lo adorarono.	28 "Your servant our father is thriving and still in good health," they said, as they bowed respectfully.
29 Ma Giuseppe alzati gli occhi vide Beniamin suo fratello uterino, e disse: È egli questi il fratel vostro più piccolo, di cui mi avevate parlato? E soggiunse: Abbia Dio misericordia di te, figlio mio.	29 When Joseph's eye fell on his full brother Benjamin, he asked, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you told me?" Then he said to him, "May God be gracious to you, my boy!"
30 E in fretta si ritirò, perché le viscere di lui si erano commosse a causa del suo fratello, e gli scappavano le lacrime: ed entrato in camera pianse.	30 With that, Joseph had to hurry out, for he was so overcome with affection for his brother that he was on the verge of tears. He went into a private room and wept there.
31 E di poi lavatosi la faccia venne fuora, e si fe' forza, e disse: Portisi da mangiare.	31 After washing his face, he reappeared and, now in control of himself, gave the order, "Serve the meal."
32 E imbandita che fu la mensa a parte per Giuseppe ed anche a parte per gli Egiziani, che mangiavano insieme, e a parte pe' fratelli (perocché non è lecito agli Egiziani di mangiar cogli Ebrei, e profano credono tal convito),	32 It was served separately to him, to the brothers, and to the Egyptians who partook of his board. (Egyptians may not eat with Hebrews; that is abhorrent to them.)
33 Sederono alla destra di lui, il primogenito secondo la sua maggioranza, e il più piccolo secondo la sua età. E restavano maravigliati oltre modo,	33 When they were seated by his directions according to their age, from the oldest to the youngest, they looked at one another in amazement;
34 Ricevendo le porzioni, che eran loro mandate da lui: e la porzione maggiore, che era cinque volte più grossa fu per Beniamino. E bevvero, e si esilararono con lui.	34 and as portions were brought to them from Joseph's table, Benjamin's portion was five times as large as anyone else's. So they drank freely and made merry with him.
