1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.	1 J’ai donc préféré ne pas revenir chez vous avec des reproches.
2 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?	2 Car si je vous fais de la peine, personne ne me rendra la joie sinon celui à qui j’ai causé cette peine.
3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.	3 Et c’est bien ce que je vous ai dit dans la lettre: “Si je viens, je ne voudrais pas avoir à m’attrister pour ceux qui devraient être ma joie, et j’espère bien que tous vous partagerez ma joie.”
4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.	4 Car je me voyais dans une grande détresse et très angoissé, et je vous ai écrit entre les larmes, non pour vous faire de la peine, mais pour que vous sachiez combien je vous aime.
5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.	5 Si quelqu’un a causé de la peine, la peine n’a pas été pour moi mais, d’une certaine façon, car je ne veux pas exagérer, pour vous tous.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.	6 Et pour celui-là, les reproches qu’il a reçus de la majorité devraient suffire.
7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.	7 Maintenant vous devriez plutôt lui manifester de la bonté et l’encourager. Sinon, il ressentirait plus de peine qu’il n’en peut supporter.
8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.	8 Aussi, je vous demande de l’entourer d’affection.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.	9 Si je vous ai écrit, c’était pour voir votre réaction et savoir si votre obéissance est entière.
10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;	10 Si vous pardonnez, moi aussi je pardonne. Et si j’ai quelque chose à pardonner, je pardonne face au Christ à cause de vous,
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.	11 pour ne pas faire le jeu de Satan. Car nous savons bien où il veut en venir.
12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,	12 Comme je disais, je suis allé à Troas pour y donner l’Évangile du Christ, et grâce au Seigneur je fus capable de le faire.
13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.	13 Mais mon esprit ne pouvait rester en paix car je n’y avais pas retrouvé Tite, mon frère. Aussi, je les ai laissés et je suis parti pour la Macédoine.
14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.	14 Remercions Dieu qui nous entraîne toujours dans la marche victorieuse du Christ et se sert de nous pour répandre en tous lieux le parfum de sa connaissance!
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:	15 Si le Christ est la victime, nous sommes l’odeur du sacrifice qui monte vers Dieu. Nous le sommes pour ceux qui sont sauvés comme pour ceux qui se perdent.
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?	16 Pour les uns c’est une odeur de mort qui mène à la mort; pour les autres c’est le parfum de la vie, qui conduit à la vie. Mais qui est à la hauteur d’un tel rôle?
17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.	17 On trouve facilement des revendeurs de la Parole de Dieu, mais chez nous tout est sincère: tout vient de Dieu et tout est dit face à lui, dans le Christ.
