1 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.	1 Lorsqu'il eut été décidé que Paul irait par mer en Italie, et qu'on le remettrait avec d'autres prisonniers au centurion de la cohorte d'Auguste, nommé Jules,
2 And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.	2 étant monté sur un vaisseau d'Adrumète, nous levâmes l'ancre et nous commençâmes à naviguer le long des côtes de l'Asie, ayant toujours avec nous Aristarque, Macédonien de Thessalonique.
3 And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.	3 Le jour suivant nous arrivâmes à Sidon; et Jules, traitant Paul avec humanité, lui permit d'aller chez ses amis et de recevoir leurs soins.
4 And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.	4 l. Et comme nous étions tombés sur une langue de terre qui avait la mer des deux côtés, ils y firent échouer le vaisseau; et la proue, s'y étant enfoncée, demeurait immobile, mais la poupe se rompait par la violence des vagues.
5 And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.	5 Puis traversant la mer de Cilicie et de Pamphylie, nous vînmes à Lystres, en Lycie;
6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.	6 et là le centurion, trouvant un vaisseau d'Alexandrie qui faisait voile en Italie, nous y transborda.
7 And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;	7 Pendant plusieurs jours nous naviguâmes lentement, et c'est avec peine que nous arrivâmes vis-à-vis de Gnide, le vent nous empêchant d'avancer; nous cotoyàmes l'île de Crête vers Salmoné.
8 And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.	8 En longeant la côte avec peine, nous vînmes en un lieu appelé Bons-Ports, près duquel était la ville de Thalassa.
9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,	9 Mais comme il s'était écoulé beaucoup de temps, et que la navigation n'était déjà plus sûre, car le jeûne même était déjà passé, Paul les avertit,
10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.	10 en leur disant: Hommes, je vois que la navigation commence à être pénible et pleine de péril, non seulement pour la cargaison et le vaisseau, mais aussi pour nos vies.
11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.	11 Mais le centurion ajoutait plus de foi au pilote et au maître du vaisseau qu'à ce que disait Paul.
12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.	12 Et comme le port n'était pas bon pour hiverner, la plupart furent d'avis de se remettre en mer, afin de gagner, si on le pouvait, Phénice, port de Crète, qui regarde l'Africus et le Corus, et d'y passer l'hiver.
13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.	13 Une brise du sud s'étant mise à souffler, croyant pouvoir exécuter leur dessein, ils levèrent l'ancre d'Asson et côtoyèrent la Crète.
14 But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.	14 Mais peu après se déchaîna sur l'île un vent impétueux, qu'on appelle Euroaquilon;
15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.	15 et comme le navire était entraîné et ne pouvait pas résister au vent, le laissant aller au gré de la tempête, nous étions emportés.
16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:	16 Poussés au-dessous d'une île appelée Cauda, nous pûmes à peine être maîtres de la chaloupe.
17 Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.	17 Après l'avoir hissée, les matelots, se servant de câbles, lièrent le vaisseau, et, dans la crainte d'être jetés sur la Syrte, ils abaissèrent les voiles et nous nous laissâmes ainsi emporter.
18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;	18 Et comme nous étions battus par une violente tempête, le jour suivant ils jetèrent la cargaison à la mer;
19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.	19 et le troisième jour, de leurs propres mains ils jetèrent les agrès du vaisseau.
20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.	20 Le soleil et les étoiles ne parurent pas pendant plusieurs jours, et la tempête restant toujours aussi forte, nous perdîmes tout espoir de salut.
21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.	21 Il y avait longtemps que personne n'avait mangé; alors Paul, se levant au milieu d'eux, leur dit: Il fallait me croire, ô hommes, ne point partir de Crète, et nous épargner tant de peine et de perte.
22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.	22 Mais maintenant je vous exhorte à avoir bon courage; car aucun de vous ne périra, seul le vaisseau sera perdu.
23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,	23 Car cette nuit un Ange du Dieu auquel j'appartiens et que je sers, m'est apparu,
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.	24 disant: Ne crains pas, Paul; il faut que tu comparaisses devant César, et voici que Dieu t'a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.	25 C'est pourquoi, ayez bon courage, ô hommes; car j'ai confiance en Dieu qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit.
26 Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.	26 Mais il faut que nous soyons jetés sur quelque île.
27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;	27 Lorsque fut venue la quatorzième nuit, comme nous naviguions dans l'Adriatique, vers le milieu de la nuit, les matelots crurent que quelque terre leur apparaissait.
28 And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.	28 Et ayant jeté la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses; et un peu plus loin, ils trouvèrent quinze brasses.
29 Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.	29 Alors craignant de tomber contre des écueils, ils jetèrent quatre ancres de la poupe, et ils désiraient qu'il fît jour.
30 And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,	30 Or comme les matelots, cherchant à fuir, avaient mis la chaloupe à la mer, sous prétexte d'aller jeter des ancres du côté de la proue,
31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.	31 Paul dit au centurion et aux soldats: Si ces hommes ne restent pas sur le vaisseau, vous ne pouvez être sauvés.
32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.	32 Alors les soldats coupèrent les câbles de la chaloupe, et la laissèrent tomber.
33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.	33 Lorsque le jour commençait â poindre, Paul les exhorta tous â prendre de la nourriture, en disant: C'est aujourd'hui le quatorzième jour que vous êtes dans l'attente, à jeun et ne prenant rien;
34 Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.	34 c'est pourquoi je vous invite à prendre de la nourriture, pour votre salut, car il ne se perdra pas un cheveu de la tête d'aucun de vous.
35 And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.	35 Lorsqu'il eut dit cela, prenant du pain, il rendit grâces à Dieu en présence de tous; puis il le rompit et commença à manger.
36 Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.	36 Et tous, rendus plus courageux, prirent aussi de la nourriture.
37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.	37 Or nous étions en tout dans le vaisseau deux cent soixante-seize personnes.
38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.	38 Quand ils furent rassasiés, ils allégèrent le vaisseau, en jetant le blé dans la mer.
39 And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.	39 Lorsque le jour fut venu, ils ne reconnurent point la terre; mais ils aperçurent un golfe ayant une plage, et ils résolurent d'y pousser le vaisseau, s'ils le pouvaient.
40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.	40 Après avoir levé les ancres et lâché en même temps les attaches des gouvernails, ils s'abandonnèrent à la mer, et ayant mis la voile de misaine au vent, ils se dirigeaient vers le rivage.
41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.
42 And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.	42 Les soldats furent d'avis de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelqu'un d'eux ne s'enfuît en nageant.
43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:	43 Mais le centurion, qui voulait sauver Paul, les en empêcha, et il ordonna à ceux qui pouvaient nager de se jeter à l'eau les premiers, et de s'échapper en gagnant la terre.
44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.	44 On porta les autres sur des planches, et quelqu'uns sur des débris du vaisseau. Et ainsi il arriva que tous parvinrent à terre sains et saufs.
