1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,	1 Allora Gesù si rivolse alle folle e ai suoi discepoli
2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:	2 dicendo: "Sulla cattedra di Mosè si sono assisi gli scribi e i farisei.
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.	3 Fate e osservate ciò che vi dicono, ma non quello che fanno. Poiché dicono, ma non fanno.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.	4 Legano infatti pesi opprimenti, difficili a portarsi, e li impongono sulle spalle degli uomini; ma essi non li vogliono rimuovere neppure con un dito.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,	5 Fanno tutto per essere visti dagli uomini. Infatti fanno sempre più larghe le loro filatterie e più lunghe le frange;
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,	6 amano i primi posti nei conviti e le prime file nelle sinagoghe;
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.	7 amano essere salutati nelle piazze ed essere chiamati dalla gente rabbì".
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.	8 "Ma voi non vi fate chiamare rabbì, poiché uno solo è fra voi il Maestro e tutti voi siete fratelli.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.	9 Nessuno chiamerete sulla terra vostro padre, poiché uno solo è il vostro Padre, quello celeste.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.	10 Non vi farete chiamare precettori, poiché uno solo è il vostro precettore, il Cristo.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.	11 Chi è il maggiore fra voi sarà vostro servitore.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.	12 Chi si esalterà sarà umiliato, e chi si umilierà sarà esaltato".
13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.	13 "Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, che chiudete il regno dei cieli davanti agli uomini; infatti, voi non entrate e trattenete coloro che vorrebbero entrarci (
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.	14 ).
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.	15 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, poiché siete capaci di attraversare il mare e un intero continente per fare un solo proselito, e quando ci siete riusciti lo rendete figlio della Geenna il doppio di voi.
16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!	16 Guai a voi, guide cieche che dite: "Se uno giura per il tempio, è niente; se invece giura per l'oro del tempio, rimane obbligato".
17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?	17 Stolti e ciechi! Che cosa vale di più: l'oro o il tempio che rende sacro l'oro?
18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.	18 E dite ancora: "Se uno giura per l'altare, è niente; se invece giura per l'offerta che sta su di esso, rimane obbligato".
19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?	19 Ciechi, ma che cosa vale di più: l'offerta o l'altare che rende sacra l'offerta?
20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.	20 Chi dunque ha giurato per l'altare, fa giuramento per esso e per tutto ciò che si trova su di esso.
21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.	21 E chi ha giurato per il tempio, emette giuramento per esso e per Chi vi abita.
22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.	22 E chi ha giurato per il cielo, fa giuramento per il trono di Dio e per Colui che vi è assiso.
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.	23 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, poiché pagate la decima sulla menta, sull'aneto e sul cumino e poi trascurate i precetti più gravi della legge, come la giustizia, la pietà, la fede. Queste cose bisognava osservare, pur senza trascurare quelle altre.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.	24 Guide cieche, che filtrate il moscerino, e ingoiate il cammello!
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.	25 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, che pulite l'esterno della coppa e del piatto, e dentro rimangono pieni di rapina e d'immondizia.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.	26 Cieco fariseo, pulisci prima l'interno della coppa e poi anche l'esterno di essa sarà pulito.
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.	27 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, poiché siete come sepolcri imbiancati che all'esterno appaiono belli a vedersi, dentro invece sono pieni di ossa di morti e di ogni putredine.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.	28 Così anche voi all'esterno apparite giusti davanti agli uomini, ma nell'interno siete pieni d'ipocrisia e d'iniquità.
29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,	29 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, poiché innalzate i sepolcri dei profeti e ornate i monumenti dei giusti
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.	30 dicendo: "Se fossimo stati ai tempi dei nostri padri, non ci saremmo associati a loro nel versare il sangue dei profeti".
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.	31 Così testimoniate, contro voi stessi, di essere figli di quelli che uccisero i profeti
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.	32 e colmate la misura dei vostri padri!".
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?	33 "Serpenti, razza di vipere, come sfuggirete al castigo della Geenna?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:	34 Per questo, ecco che io mando a voi profeti, sapienti e scribi. Ebbene, di essi, parte ne ucciderete mettendoli in croce, parte ne flagellerete nelle vostre sinagoghe e li perseguiterete di città in città.
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.	35 Verrà così su di voi tutto il sangue innocente sparso sulla terra, dal sangue del giusto Abele fino a quello di Zaccaria figlio di Barachia, che uccideste fra il santuario e l'altare.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.	36 In verità vi dico: tutto ciò verrà su questa generazione.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!	37 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi quelli che ti sono mandati, quante volte ho tentato di raccogliere i tuoi figli, come la gallina raduna i suoi pulcini sotto le ali e voi non avete voluto!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.	38 Ecco: la vostra casa vi sarà lasciata deserta.
39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.	39 Vi dico infatti: da ora in poi non mi vedrete, fino a quando non direte: "Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore!".
