Ezekiel 18

1 The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,	1 Cette parole de Yahvé me fut adressée:
2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?	2 “Pourquoi donc répétez-vous ce proverbe au sujet du pays d’Israël: Les pères ont mangé des raisins verts et les dents des fils en sont agacées?
3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.	3 Aussi vrai que je suis vivant - parole de Yahvé, ce proverbe n’aura plus cours en Israël.
4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.	4 Car toutes les vies sont à moi, la vie du fils comme celle du père; elles sont à moi, et celui qui pèche, c’est lui qui mourra.
5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,	5 Voici un homme juste qui pratique le droit et la justice;
6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,	6 il ne mange pas la chair non saignée, il ne tourne pas son regard vers les sales idoles de la maison d’Israël, il ne souille pas la femme de son prochain et ne s’approche pas d’une femme durant ses règles;
7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;	7 il n’opprime personne, il rend le gage à celui qui lui doit, il ne commet pas de vol, il donne son pain à celui qui a faim et couvre d’un vêtement celui qui est nu;
8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,	8 il ne prête pas son argent avec intérêt, il ne prend pas de commission, il détourne sa main de l’injustice, il juge selon la vérité entre un homme et son prochain;
9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.	9 il suit mes commandements, observe mes lois et agit en tout avec fidélité. Cet homme est donc juste et il vivra, parole de Yahvé.
10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,	10 Mais voici que cet homme a un fils violent qui répand le sang et commet ces fautes
11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,	11 que son père n’a pas commises. Il mange la chair non saignée, il souille la femme de son prochain,
12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,	12 il violente le pauvre et l’indigent, il vole, il ne rend pas le gage prêté, il tourne son regard vers les sales idoles et commet le crime,
13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.	13 il prête son argent avec intérêt et prend une commission. Après tout cela, vivra-t-il? Non, il ne vivra pas. S’il a commis tous ces crimes, il doit mourir: il sera responsable de sa mort.
14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,	14 Mais voici que cet homme à son tour a un fils; ce fils a vu tous les péchés que son père commettait; il les a vus et il ne l’a pas imité.
15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,	15 Il ne mange pas la chair non saignée, il ne tourne pas son regard vers les sales idoles de la maison d’Israël, il ne souille pas la femme de son prochain,
16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,	16 il ne violente personne, ne garde pas le gage, il ne vole pas, il donne son pain à celui qui a faim et couvre d’un vêtement celui est nu,
17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.	17 il ne fait pas violence au pauvre, il ne prend pas d’intérêt ou de commission, il observe mes lois et suit mes commandements. Celui-là ne mourra pas pour le péché de son père, mais au contraire il vivra.
18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.	18 C’est le père qui mourra pour son péché, celui qui a multiplié les violences, qui a volé son frère, qui a fait ce qui est mal au milieu de son peuple.
19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.	19 Et après cela vous demandez: “Pourquoi le fils ne porte-t-il pas le péché de son père?” Mais le fils s’est conduit selon le droit et la justice, il a observé tous mes commandements et les a mis en pratique! Il doit vivre.
20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.	20 Celui qui pèche, c’est celui-là qui mourra; le fils ne portera pas le péché du père, et le père ne portera pas le péché du fils. Le mérite du juste restera sur lui, et la méchanceté du méchant restera sur lui.
21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.	21 Si le méchant se détourne de tous les péchés qu’il a commis, s’il se met à observer tous mes commandements et se conduit selon le droit et la justice, il vivra et ne mourra pas;
22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.	22 on oubliera tous les méfaits qu’il a commis et, à cause de la justice qu’il a pratiquée, il vivra.
23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?	23 Croyez-vous que je prenne plaisir à la mort du méchant, dit Yahvé? Mon plaisir est qu’il renonce à sa mauvaise conduite et qu’il vive.
24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.	24 Par contre, si le juste se détourne de sa justice et se met à agir mal, ( ) s’il commet les mêmes méfaits que commet le méchant, toutes les œuvres de justice qu’il a pratiquées seront oubliées. Il mourra à cause de l’infidélité dont il s’est rendu coupable et du péché qu’il a commis.
25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?	25 Vous dites: La façon de voir de Yahvé n’est pas correcte. Écoutez donc, gens d’Israël: est-ce ma manière de voir qui n’est pas correcte? N’est-ce pas plutôt la vôtre?
26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.	26 Lorsque le juste se détourne de sa justice et commet le mal, et qu’il meurt, il meurt à cause de l’injustice qu’il a commise.
27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.	27 De même, si le méchant se détourne de la mauvaise conduite qu’il avait et agit selon le droit et la justice, il vivra.
28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.	28 S’il se détourne de toutes les infidélités qu’il commettait, il doit vivre et non pas mourir.
29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?	29 Les gens d’Israël disent: La façon de voir du Seigneur n’est pas juste. Mais, est-ce ma façon de voir qui n’est pas juste, gens d’Israël, n’est-ce pas plutôt la vôtre?
30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.	30 Je vous jugerai chacun selon votre conduite, gens d’Israël, dit Yahvé. Reprenez-vous et renoncez à toutes vos infidélités si vous ne voulez plus payer le prix de votre injustice.
31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?	31 Rejetez loin de vous toutes les infidélités que vous avez commises, faites-vous un cœur nouveau et un esprit nouveau; voulez-vous donc mourir, gens d’Israël?
32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.	32 Moi, je ne prends pas plaisir à la mort de qui que ce soit - parole de Yahvé; convertissez-vous et vivez.”
