1 When these covenants were made, Lysias went unto the king, and the Jews were about their husbandry.	1 Conclusi questi accordi, Lisia se ne tornò presso il re, mentre i Giudei ripresero il lavoro dei campi.
2 But of the governours of several places, Timotheus, and Apollonius the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and beside them Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to be quiet and live in peace.	2 Ma tra i comandanti locali, Timoteo e Apollonio, figlio di Gennèo, nonché Girolamo e Demofonte e, oltre a questi, Nicànore, comandante dei Ciprioti, non li lasciavano vivere tranquilli né stare in pace.
3 The men of Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no hurt.	3 Gli abitanti di Giaffa, poi, compirono un'empietà di questo genere: invitarono i Giudei che abitavano con essi a salire, insieme alle loro donne e ai figli, su alcune barche da loro stessi preparate, come se non vi fosse stata alcuna animosità contro di essi.
4 Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city, as being desirous to live in peace, and suspecting nothing: but when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no less than two hundred of them.	4 In conformità a una decisione pubblica della città, questi accettarono, perché desideravano fare la pace e non avevano alcun sospetto; ma quando furono al largo, quelli ne fecero affondare non meno di duecento.
5 When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countrymen, he commanded those that were with him to make them ready.	5 Giuda, pertanto, appresa la notizia della crudeltà commessa contro i suoi connazionali, diede ordini ai suoi uomini
6 And calling upon God the righteous Judge, he came against those murderers of his brethren, and burnt the haven by night, and set the boats on fire, and those that fled thither he slew.	6 e, invocato Dio, giusto giudice, marciò contro gli uccisori dei suoi fratelli; incendiò di notte il porto, bruciò le barche e passò a fil di spada quanti vi si erano rifugiati.
7 And when the town was shut up, he went backward, as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppa.	7 Poi, siccome la città era stata chiusa, ripartì con l'intenzione di tornare di nuovo e di estirpare tutti gli abitanti di Giaffa.
8 But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them,	8 Intanto, avendo appreso che anche quelli di Iamnia volevano fare la stessa cosa ai Giudei che abitavano con loro,
9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set fire on the haven and the navy, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and forty furlongs off.	9 piombò di notte anche sugli Iamniti e incendiò il porto con la flotta, in modo tale che i riflessi dello splendore apparivano fino a Gerusalemme, distante duecentoquaranta stadi.
10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.	10 Allontanatisi di lì nove stadi, mentre marciavano contro Timoteo, non meno di cinquemila Arabi con cinquecento cavalieri si lanciarono su di lui.
11 Whereupon there was a very sore battle; but Judas' side by the help of God got the victory; so that the Nomades of Arabia, being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising both to give him cattle, and to pleasure him otherwise.	11 Vi fu una violenta battaglia, ma gli uomini di Giuda, grazie all'aiuto di Dio, ebbero la meglio e perciò i nomadi battuti supplicarono Giuda di dar loro la destra in segno di pace, promettendo di donargli del bestiame e di essergli utili in altre cose.
12 Then Judas, thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things, granted them peace: whereupon they shook hands, and so they departed to their tents.	12 Giuda, comprendendo che davvero gli sarebbero stati utili in molte cose, accondiscese a fare la pace con essi. Perciò, ricevuta la destra, si ritirarono nelle loro tende.
13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city, which was fenced about with walls, and inhabited by people of divers countries; and the name of it was Caspis.	13 Giuda assalì anche una città, fortificata con argini e circondata da mura, che era abitata da gente di ogni genere e aveva nome Casfin.
14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals, that they behaved themselves rudely toward them that were with Judas, railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.	14 Quelli che erano dentro, fidando nella robustezza delle mura e nella provvista di viveri, insultavano in modo triviale gli uomini di Giuda, schernendoli, bestemmiando e dicendo cose sconvenienti.
15 Wherefore Judas with his company, calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without rams or engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua, gave a fierce assault against the walls,	15 Gli uomini di Giuda, allora, invocato il grande Dominatore del mondo, che senza arieti e macchine da guerra fece crollare Gerico al tempo di Giosuè, assalirono furiosamente il muro.
16 And took the city by the will of God, and made unspeakable slaughters, insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoining thereunto, being filled full, was seen running with blood.	16 Divenuti, per volontà di Dio, padroni della città, vi fecero una strage indescrivibile, sicché il lago vicino, che ha la larghezza di due stadi, pareva scorrere ripieno di sangue.
17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni.	17 Allontanatisi poi di lì settecentocinquanta stadi, raggiunsero Caraca, presso i Giudei chiamati Tubiani.
18 But as for Timotheus, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched any thing, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.	18 Ma in quei luoghi non trovarono Timoteo, il quale, senza avervi fatto alcunché, se ne era allontanato, dopo aver lasciato in un certo posto una guarnigione, ben equipaggiata.
19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus' captains, went forth, and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.	19 Allora Dositeo e Sosipatro, che erano tra i comandanti degli uomini del Maccabeo, fecero una sortita e annientarono gli uomini lasciati da Timoteo nella fortezza, che erano più di diecimila.
20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.	20 Il Maccabeo, a sua volta, disposto il suo esercito in schiere, pose costoro a capo delle schiere e si lanciò su Timoteo, che aveva con sé centoventimila fanti e duemilacinquecento cavalieri.
21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas' coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.	21 Informato dell'avanzata di Giuda, Timoteo mandò avanti le donne, i bambini e ogni altro bagaglio verso la località detta Carnion. Era, infatti, un posto inespugnabile e di difficile accesso, a causa della strettezza di tutti i suoi passaggi.
22 But when Judas his first band came in sight, the enemies, being smitten with fear and terror through the appearing of him who seeth all things, fled amain, one running into this way, another that way, so as that they were often hurt of their own men, and wounded with the points of their own swords.	22 Apparsa la prima schiera di Giuda e caduto lo spavento sui nemici, a causa anche del timore suscitato dalla sopravvenuta apparizione di colui che tutto vede, quelli incominciarono a fuggire, condotti chi da una parte e chi dall'altra, al punto che spesso venivano travolti dai propri compagni e trafitti dalle punte delle loro spade.
23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them, killing those wicked wretches, of whom he slew about thirty thousand men.	23 Giuda allora ne fece un vigoroso inseguimento, trafiggendo questi scellerati e uccidendone circa trentamila.
24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater, whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life, because he had many of the Jews' parents, and the brethren of some of them, who, if they put him to death, should not be regarded.	24 Timoteo stesso, caduto nelle mani degli uomini di Dositeo e Sosipatro, chiedeva con molta astuzia di essere rilasciato sano e salvo, poiché di molti deteneva i genitori e di altri i fratelli, ai quali altrimenti sarebbe successo di essere tenuti in nessun conto.
25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt, according to the agreement, they let him go for the saving of their brethren.	25 Quando perciò egli si fu ripetutamente impegnato al patto che avrebbe restituito quegli uomini incolumi, lo lasciarono libero in considerazione della salvezza dei propri fratelli.
26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion, and to the temple of Atargatis, and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons.	26 Quindi Giuda, assalito Carnion e l'Atargatèo, uccise venticinquemila persone.
27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them, Judas removed the host toward Ephron, a strong city, wherein Lysias abode, and a great multitude of divers nations, and the strong young men kept the walls, and defended them mightily: wherein also was great provision of engines and darts.	27 Dopo la disfatta e distruzione di questi, marciò anche contro Efron, città fortificata, nella quale abitava Lisia con una moltitudine di ogni genere. Giovani robusti, disposti davanti alle mura, combattevano vigorosamente, mentre all'interno vi era una grande provvista di macchine e di proiettili.
28 But when Judas and his company had called upon Almighty God, who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies, they won the city, and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within,	28 Ma, invocato il sovrano che con potenza abbatte le forze dei nemici, presero la città nelle loro mani e di quelli che vi erano dentro ne abbatterono venticinquemila.
29 From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem,	29 Partiti di lì, mossero alla volta di Beisan, città che è a seicento stadi da Gerusalemme.
30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them, and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity;	30 Ma i Giudei che ivi risiedevano resero testimonianza della benevolenza che gli abitanti di Beisan avevano avuto verso di essi e dell'accoglienza cortese riservata loro anche in tempi di sventura,
31 They gave them thanks, desiring them to be friendly still unto them: and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks approaching.	31 e questi li ringraziarono e, esortatili ad essere benigni anche in avvenire verso la loro stirpe, raggiunsero Gerusalemme, essendo ormai vicina la festa delle Settimane.
32 And after the feast, called Pentecost, they went forth against Gorgias the governor of Idumea,	32 Dopo la festa detta di Pentecoste, mossero contro Gorgia, stratega dell'Idumea.
33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred horsemen.	33 Questi uscì in campo con tremila fanti e quattrocento cavalieri.
34 And it happened that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain.	34 Schieratisi in battaglia, caddero alcuni tra i Giudei.
35 At which time Dositheus, one of Bacenor's company, who was on horseback, and a strong man, was still upon Gorgias, and taking hold of his coat drew him by force; and when he would have taken that cursed man alive, a horseman of Thracia coming upon him smote off his shoulder, so that Gorgias fled unto Marisa.	35 Un certo Dositeo, valoroso cavaliere dei Tubiani, aveva afferrato Gorgia e tenendolo per la clamide lo conduceva a forza col proposito di catturare vivo quel maledetto. Ma uno dei cavalieri traci gli si lanciò contro e gli mozzò il braccio. Così Gorgia se ne fuggì verso Marisa.
36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord, that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battle.	36 Poiché gli uomini di Esdrin combattevano da tempo ed erano affaticati, Giuda invocò il Signore a mostrarsi loro alleato e guida nel combattimento.
37 And with that he began in his own language, and sung psalms with a loud voice, and rushing unawares upon Gorgias' men, he put them to flight.	37 Quindi, intonato nella lingua paterna il grido di guerra per mezzo di inni, improvvisamente assalì gli uomini di Gorgia e li costrinse alla fuga.
38 So Judas gathered his host, and came into the city of Odollam, And when the seventh day came, they purified themselves, as the custom was, and kept the sabbath in the same place.	38 Giuda poi, radunato l'esercito, raggiunse la città di Odollam. Sopraggiunto il settimo giorno, si purificarono secondo l'uso e vi trascorsero il sabato.
39 And upon the day following, as the use had been, Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers' graves.	39 Il giorno seguente gli uomini di Giuda, quando ormai la necessità lo esigeva, andarono a raccogliere i corpi dei caduti per deporli insieme ai parenti nei sepolcri dei loro padri.
40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites, which is forbidden the Jews by the law. Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain.	40 Trovarono però, sotto le tuniche di ciascuno dei morti, oggetti sacri agli idoli di Iamnia, che la legge interdice ai Giudei. Così fu a tutti palese per quale causa costoro erano morti.
41 All men therefore praising the Lord, the righteous Judge, who had opened the things that were hid,	41 Tutti, perciò, dopo aver benedetto il Signore, giusto giudice, che rende manifeste le cose occulte,
42 Betook themselves unto prayer, and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance. Besides, that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain.	42 si diedero a fare una supplica, chiedendo che il peccato commesso fosse completamente cancellato. Il nobile Giuda allora esortò la sua gente a conservarsi senza peccati, poiché avevano visto coi propri occhi quanto era avvenuto a causa del peccato dei caduti.
43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachms of silver, he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering, doing therein very well and honestly, in that he was mindful of the resurrection:	43 Quindi, fatta una colletta a tanto per uomo, inviò a Gerusalemme circa duemila dramme d'argento per far offrire un sacrificio per il peccato, agendo così molto bene e nobilmente, nel pensiero della risurrezione.
44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead.	44 Infatti se egli non avesse sperato che i caduti risorgeranno, sarebbe stato superfluo e sciocco pregare per i morti.
45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour laid up for those that died godly, it was an holy and good thought. Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.	45 Ma se egli pensava alla magnifica ricompensa riservata a quelli che si addormentano nella loro pietà, il suo pensiero era santo e pio. Per questo egli fece compiere il sacrificio di espiazione per quelli che erano morti, affinché fossero assolti dal peccato.
