1 When these covenants were made, Lysias went unto the king, and the Jews were about their husbandry.	1 Ces traités conclus, Lysias revint chez le roi, tandis que les Juifs se remettaient aux travauxdes champs.
2 But of the governours of several places, Timotheus, and Apollonius the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and beside them Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to be quiet and live in peace.	2 Parmi les stratèges en place, Timothée et Apollonius, fils de Gennéos, et aussi Hiéronyme etDémophon, à qui s'ajoutait Nikanor le Cypriarque, ne laissaient goûter aux Juifs ni repos, ni tranquillité.
3 The men of Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no hurt.	3 Les habitants de Joppé commirent un acte particulièrement impie. Ils invitèrent les Juifsdomiciliés chez eux à monter avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants sur des barques qu'ils avaient préparées eux-mêmes, comme si nulle inimitié n'existait à leur égard.
4 Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city, as being desirous to live in peace, and suspecting nothing: but when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no less than two hundred of them.	4 Sur l'assurance d'un décret rendu par le peuple de la ville, les Juifs acceptèrent comme desgens désireux de la paix et sans défiance, mais quand ils furent au large, on les coula à fond au nombre d'aumoins 200.
5 When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countrymen, he commanded those that were with him to make them ready.	5 Dès que Judas eut appris la cruauté commise contre les gens de sa nation, il fit savoir sesordres à ceux qui étaient avec lui,
6 And calling upon God the righteous Judge, he came against those murderers of his brethren, and burnt the haven by night, and set the boats on fire, and those that fled thither he slew.	6 et, après avoir invoqué Dieu, le juge équitable, il marcha contre les meurtriers de ses frères.De nuit, il incendia le port, brûla les vaisseaux et passa au fil de l'épée ceux qui y avaient cherché un refuge.
7 And when the town was shut up, he went backward, as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppa.	7 Mais la place ayant été fermée, il partit dans le dessein d'y revenir pour extirper toute la citédes Joppites.
8 But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them,	8 Averti que ceux de Iamnia voulaient jouer le même tour aux Juifs qui habitaient parmi eux,
9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set fire on the haven and the navy, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and forty furlongs off.	9 il attaqua de nuit les Iamnites, incendia le port avec la flotte, de telle sorte que les lueurs desflammes furent aperçues jusqu'à Jérusalem quoique distante de 240 stades.
10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.	10 Il s'était éloigné de là de neuf stades dans une marche contre Timothée, lorsque tombèrentsur lui des Arabes au nombre d'au moins 5.000 hommes de pied et 500 cavaliers.
11 Whereupon there was a very sore battle; but Judas' side by the help of God got the victory; so that the Nomades of Arabia, being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising both to give him cattle, and to pleasure him otherwise.	11 Un violent combat s'étant engagé, et les soldats de Judas l'ayant emporté avec l'aide de Dieu,les nomades vaincus demandèrent à Judas de leur donner la main droite, promettant de lui livrer du bétail et delui être utiles en tout le reste.
12 Then Judas, thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things, granted them peace: whereupon they shook hands, and so they departed to their tents.	12 Comprenant qu'en réalité ils pourraient lui rendre beaucoup de services, Judas consentit àfaire la paix avec eux et, après qu'on se fut donné la main, ils se retirèrent sous la tente.
13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city, which was fenced about with walls, and inhabited by people of divers countries; and the name of it was Caspis.	13 Judas attaqua aussi une certaine ville forte, entourée de remparts, habitée par un mélange denations et dont le nom était Kaspîn.
14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals, that they behaved themselves rudely toward them that were with Judas, railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.	14 Confiants dans la puissance de leurs murs et leurs dépôts de vivres, les assiégés semontraient grossiers à l'excès envers Judas et les siens, joignant aux insultes les blasphèmes et des proposimpies.
15 Wherefore Judas with his company, calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without rams or engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua, gave a fierce assault against the walls,	15 Judas et ses compagnons, ayant invoqué le grand Souverain du monde qui sans béliers nimachines de guerre renversa Jéricho au temps de Josué, assaillirent le mur avec férocité.
16 And took the city by the will of God, and made unspeakable slaughters, insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoining thereunto, being filled full, was seen running with blood.	16 Devenus maîtres de la ville par la volonté de Dieu, ils firent un carnage indescriptible, aupoint que l'étang voisin, large de deux stades, paraissait rempli par le sang qui y avait coulé.
17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni.	17 Comme ils s'étaient éloignés à 750 stades de là, ils atteignirent le Charax, chez les Juifsappelés Toubiens.
18 But as for Timotheus, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched any thing, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.	18 Quant à Timothée, ils ne le trouvèrent point dans ces parages, car il avait quitté les lieuxsans avoir rien fait, mais non sans avoir laissé sur un certain point une très forte garnison.
19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus' captains, went forth, and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.	19 Dosithée et Sosipater, généraux du Maccabée, s'y rendirent et tuèrent les hommes laissés parTimothée dans la forteresse au nombre de plus de 10.000.
20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.	20 Maccabée, de son côté, ayant distribué ses troupes en cohortes, nomma ceux qui seraient àleur tête et s'élança contre Timothée, qui avait autour de lui 120.000 fantassins et 2.500 cavaliers.
21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas' coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.	21 Informé de l'approche de Judas, Timothée envoya tout d'abord les femmes, les enfants et lereste des bagages au lieu dit le Karnion, car la place était inexpugnable et difficile d'accès à cause des passesétroites de toute la contrée.
22 But when Judas his first band came in sight, the enemies, being smitten with fear and terror through the appearing of him who seeth all things, fled amain, one running into this way, another that way, so as that they were often hurt of their own men, and wounded with the points of their own swords.	22 La cohorte de Judas parut la première: l'épouvante s'étant emparée de l'ennemi, ainsi que lacrainte que leur inspirait la manifestation de Celui qui voit tout, ils prirent la fuite en tous sens, de telle sorte quesouvent ils se blessaient entre eux et se transperçaient de leurs propres épées.
23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them, killing those wicked wretches, of whom he slew about thirty thousand men.	23 Judas les poursuivit avec une vigueur extrême, embrochant ces criminels dont il fit périrjusqu'à 30.000 hommes.
24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater, whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life, because he had many of the Jews' parents, and the brethren of some of them, who, if they put him to death, should not be regarded.	24 Timothée, étant tombé lui-même aux mains des gens de Dosithée et de Sosipater, les conjuraavec beaucoup d'artifice de le laisser aller sain et sauf, affirmant qu'il avait en son pouvoir des parents et mêmedes frères de beaucoup d'entre eux, à qui il pourrait arriver d'être supprimés.
25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt, according to the agreement, they let him go for the saving of their brethren.	25 Quand il les eut persuadés par de longs discours qu'il leur restituerait ces hommes sains etsaufs en vertu de l'engagement qu'il prenait, ils le relâchèrent pour sauver leurs frères.
26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion, and to the temple of Atargatis, and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons.	26 S'étant rendu au Karnion et à l'Atargatéion, Judas égorgea 25.000 hommes.
27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them, Judas removed the host toward Ephron, a strong city, wherein Lysias abode, and a great multitude of divers nations, and the strong young men kept the walls, and defended them mightily: wherein also was great provision of engines and darts.	27 Après leur désastre (et leur perte), il conduisit son armée contre Ephrôn, ville forte oùhabitait Lysanias. De robustes jeunes gens, rangés devant les murailles, combattaient avec vigueur, et, àl'intérieur, il y avait des quantités de machines et de projectiles en réserve.
28 But when Judas and his company had called upon Almighty God, who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies, they won the city, and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within,	28 Mais, ayant invoqué le Souverain qui brise par sa puissance les forces des ennemis, les Juifsse rendirent maîtres de la ville et couchèrent sur le sol, parmi ceux qui s'y trouvaient, environ 25.000 hommes.
29 From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem,	29 Partis de là, ils foncèrent sur Scythopolis, à 600 stades de Jérusalem.
30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them, and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity;	30 Mais les Juifs qui s'y étaient fixés, ayant attesté que les Scythopolites avaient eu pour eux dela bienveillance et leur avaient réservé un accueil humain au temps du malheur,
31 They gave them thanks, desiring them to be friendly still unto them: and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks approaching.	31 Judas et les siens remercièrent ces derniers et les engagèrent à se montrer encore à l'avenirbien disposés pour leur race. Ils arrivèrent à Jérusalem très peu avant la fête des Semaines.
32 And after the feast, called Pentecost, they went forth against Gorgias the governor of Idumea,	32 Après la fête appelée Pentecôte, ils foncèrent contre Gorgias, stratège de l'Idumée.
33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred horsemen.	33 Celui-ci sortit à la tête de 3.000 fantassins et 400 cavaliers,
34 And it happened that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain.	34 qui engagèrent une bataille rangée où il arriva qu'un certain nombre de Juifs succombèrent.
35 At which time Dositheus, one of Bacenor's company, who was on horseback, and a strong man, was still upon Gorgias, and taking hold of his coat drew him by force; and when he would have taken that cursed man alive, a horseman of Thracia coming upon him smote off his shoulder, so that Gorgias fled unto Marisa.	35 Le dénommé Dosithée, cavalier du corps des Toubiens, homme vaillant, se rendit maître dela personne de Gorgias et, l'ayant saisi par la chlamyde, il l'entraînait de force en vue de capturer vivant cemaudit, mais un cavalier thrace, se jetant sur Dosithée, lui trancha l'épaule, et Gorgias s'enfuit à Marisa.
36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord, that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battle.	36 Cependant ceux qui se trouvaient avec Esdrias combattaient depuis longtemps et tombaientd'épuisement. Judas supplia le Seigneur de se montrer leur allié et leur guide dans le combat.
37 And with that he began in his own language, and sung psalms with a loud voice, and rushing unawares upon Gorgias' men, he put them to flight.	37 Entonnant ensuite à pleine voix dans la langue des pères le cri de guerre avec des hymnes, ilmit en déroute les gens de Gorgias.
38 So Judas gathered his host, and came into the city of Odollam, And when the seventh day came, they purified themselves, as the custom was, and kept the sabbath in the same place.	38 Judas, ayant ensuite rallié son armée, se rendit à la ville d'Odollam et, le septième jour de lasemaine survenant, ils se purifièrent selon la coutume et célébrèrent le sabbat en ce lieu.
39 And upon the day following, as the use had been, Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers' graves.	39 Le jour suivant, on vint trouver Judas (au temps où la nécessité s'en imposait) pour releverles corps de ceux qui avaient succombé et les inhumer avec leurs proches dans le tombeau de leurs pères.
40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites, which is forbidden the Jews by the law. Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain.	40 Or ils trouvèrent sous la tunique de chacun des morts des objets consacrés aux idoles deIamnia et que la Loi interdit aux Juifs. Il fut donc évident pour tous que cela avait été la cause de leur mort.
41 All men therefore praising the Lord, the righteous Judge, who had opened the things that were hid,	41 Tous donc, ayant béni la conduite du Seigneur, juge équitable qui rend manifestes les chosescachées,
42 Betook themselves unto prayer, and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance. Besides, that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain.	42 se mirent en prière pour demander que le péché commis fût entièrement pardonné, puis levaleureux Judas exhorta la troupe à se garder pure de tout péché, ayant sous les yeux ce qui était arrivé à causede la faute de ceux qui étaient tombés.
43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachms of silver, he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering, doing therein very well and honestly, in that he was mindful of the resurrection:	43 Puis, ayant fait une collecte d'environ 2.000 drachmes, il l'envoya à Jérusalem afin qu'onoffrît un sacrifice pour le péché, agissant fort bien et noblement d'après le concept de la résurrection.
44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead.	44 Car, s'il n'avait pas espéré que les soldats tombés dussent ressusciter, il était superflu et sotde prier pour les morts,
45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour laid up for those that died godly, it was an holy and good thought. Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.	45 et s'il envisageait qu'une très belle récompense est réservée à ceux qui s'endorment dans lapiété, c'était là une pensée sainte et pieuse. Voilà pourquoi il fit faire ce sacrifice expiatoire pour les morts, afinqu'ils fussent délivrés de leur péché.
