1 When these covenants were made, Lysias went unto the king, and the Jews were about their husbandry.	1 Nach dem Abschluss der Verträge kehrte Lysias zum König zurück. Die Juden begannen, wieder ihre Felder zu bestellen.
2 But of the governours of several places, Timotheus, and Apollonius the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and beside them Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to be quiet and live in peace.	2 Die Befehlshaber in jener Gegend aber, Timotheus, Apollonius, der Sohn des Gennäus, ferner Hieronymus, Demophon und auch Nikanor, der Statthalter von Zypern, ließen die Juden nicht in Ruhe und Frieden leben.
3 The men of Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no hurt.	3 Die Einwohner von Jafo begingen folgendes entsetzliche Verbrechen: Sie luden die Juden, die unter ihnen wohnten, ein, mit ihren Frauen und Kindern in Schiffe, die sie zur Verfügung stellten, einzusteigen. Sie taten, als ob sie nichts Böses gegen sie im Schild führten,
4 Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city, as being desirous to live in peace, and suspecting nothing: but when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no less than two hundred of them.	4 sondern aufgrund eines öffentlichen Beschlusses der Stadt handelten. Die Juden nahmen das Angebot an, da sie den Frieden wollten und keinen bösen Verdacht hegten. Aber als sie auf dem offenen Meer waren, wurden die Boote versenkt; mindestens zweihundert Menschen ertranken.
5 When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countrymen, he commanded those that were with him to make them ready.	5 Als Judas von der schrecklichen Tat gegen die Angehörigen seines Volkes erfuhr, gab er sie seinen Männern bekannt,
6 And calling upon God the righteous Judge, he came against those murderers of his brethren, and burnt the haven by night, and set the boats on fire, and those that fled thither he slew.	6 rief Gott, den gerechten Richter, an und überfiel die Mörder, die sich mit dem Blut seiner Brüder befleckt hatten. In der Nacht zündete er den Hafen an, verbrannte die Schiffe und stach alle nieder, die sich dorthin geflüchtet hatten.
7 And when the town was shut up, he went backward, as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppa.	7 Die Stadt selbst hatte ihre Tore verrammelt. So musste er abziehen, aber er nahm sich vor, wiederzukommen und die ganze Stadt Jafo zu vernichten.
8 But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them,	8 Als er erfuhr, dass die Bürger von Jamnia mit den Juden, die bei ihnen lebten, dasselbe tun wollten,
9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set fire on the haven and the navy, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and forty furlongs off.	9 überfiel er auch die Leute von Jamnia bei Nacht und steckte den Hafen samt der Flotte in Brand. Der Feuerschein war zweihundertvierzig Stadien weit bis nach Jerusalem zu sehen.
10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.	10 Von dort zogen sie weiter gegen Timotheus. Sie waren gerade neun Stadien weit marschiert, da griffen fünftausend Araber mit fünfhundert Reitern Judas an.
11 Whereupon there was a very sore battle; but Judas' side by the help of God got the victory; so that the Nomades of Arabia, being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising both to give him cattle, and to pleasure him otherwise.	11 Nach hitzigem Kampf gewannen die Männer des Judas die Oberhand; denn Gott half ihnen. Die bedrängten Nomaden baten Judas um Frieden, versprachen, ihm und seinen Leuten Vieh zu liefern und ihnen auch sonst gute Dienste zu erweisen.
12 Then Judas, thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things, granted them peace: whereupon they shook hands, and so they departed to their tents.	12 Da Judas der Ansicht war, ihre Hilfe könne ihnen tatsächlich bei vielen Gelegenheiten von Nutzen sein, war er damit einverstanden, mit ihnen Frieden zu schließen. Die Araber verpflichteten sich durch Handschlag und zogen sich zu ihren Zelten zurück.
13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city, which was fenced about with walls, and inhabited by people of divers countries; and the name of it was Caspis.	13 Judas griff auch eine Stadt namens Kaspin an; sie war ringsum mit Wällen und Mauern befestigt. Ihre Bevölkerung setzte sich aus Menschen verschiedenster Völker zusammen.
14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals, that they behaved themselves rudely toward them that were with Judas, railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.	14 Weil sie sich auf ihre hohen Mauern und auf ihre Vorräte verließen, wurden sie immer unverschämter gegen die Leute des Judas, beschimpften sie, lästerten Gott und schrien unflätige Worte.
15 Wherefore Judas with his company, calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without rams or engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua, gave a fierce assault against the walls,	15 Die Männer des Judas riefen den großen Herrn der Welt an, der Jericho zur Zeit Josuas ohne Rammböcke und Belagerungsmaschinen zu Boden geschmettert hatte. Dann stürmten sie mit dem Mut von Löwen gegen die Mauern an,
16 And took the city by the will of God, and made unspeakable slaughters, insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoining thereunto, being filled full, was seen running with blood.	16 und weil Gott es so wollte, konnten sie die Stadt einnehmen. Sie richteten in ihr ein unbeschreibliches Blutbad an, sodass ein zwei Stadien breiter See, der neben der Stadt lag, von dem Blut, das in ihn geflossen war, angefüllt zu sein schien.
17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni.	17 Dann marschierten sie siebenhundertfünfzig Stadien weiter, bis sie zum Charax kamen, wo die sogenannten Tubianer-Juden wohnten.
18 But as for Timotheus, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched any thing, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.	18 Timotheus trafen sie dort nicht an; denn er war, ohne etwas unternommen zu haben, von dort abgezogen. Aber er hatte in einem stark befestigten Ort eine Garnison zurückgelassen.
19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus' captains, went forth, and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.	19 Dositheus und Sosipater, zwei Offiziere aus dem Stab des Makkabäers, rückten aus und töteten die über zehntausend Mann starke Besatzung, die Timotheus in der Festung zurückgelassen hatte.
20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.	20 Dann teilte der Makkabäer sein Heer in mehrere Gruppen auf, übertrug jeweils einem seiner Offiziere den Befehl über eine Gruppe und zog in Eilmärschen gegen Timotheus, der über hundertzwanzigtausend Mann an Fußtruppen und zweitausendfünfhundert Reiter verfügte.
21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas' coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.	21 Als Timotheus vom Anmarsch des Judas erfuhr, schickte er Frauen, Kinder und den übrigen Tross in eine Stadt namens Karnajim voraus. Diesen Ort konnte man kaum belagern, da er wegen zahlreicher Engpässe fast unzugänglich war.
22 But when Judas his first band came in sight, the enemies, being smitten with fear and terror through the appearing of him who seeth all things, fled amain, one running into this way, another that way, so as that they were often hurt of their own men, and wounded with the points of their own swords.	22 Kaum zeigte sich die erste Abteilung des Judas, da gerieten die Feinde in Furcht und Schrecken, denn der, der alles überschaut, ließ eine Erscheinung sichtbar werden. Sie rannten in wilder Flucht davon, jeder in eine andere Richtung. Dabei fügten sie vielfach einander selbst Schaden zu, ja, sie durchbohrten sich gegenseitig mit den Spitzen ihrer Schwerter.
23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them, killing those wicked wretches, of whom he slew about thirty thousand men.	23 Doch Judas setzte ihnen stürmisch nach und erschlug von den Verruchten gegen dreißigtausend Mann.
24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater, whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life, because he had many of the Jews' parents, and the brethren of some of them, who, if they put him to death, should not be regarded.	24 Timotheus selbst fiel den Leuten des Dositheus und des Sosipater in die Hände. Er flehte mit schönen, doch falschen Worten, ihn unbehelligt freizulassen; die Eltern und Brüder sehr vieler Juden seien in der Gewalt seiner Leute und es könne sein, dass man auf sie keine Rücksicht nehme.
25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt, according to the agreement, they let him go for the saving of their brethren.	25 Mit vielen Worten brachte er sie dazu, seinen Versprechungen, er werde diese Menschen unversehrt zurückgeben, zu glauben. Um die Brüder zu retten, ließen sie ihn laufen.
26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion, and to the temple of Atargatis, and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons.	26 Darauf zog Judas gegen Karnajim und das Heiligtum der Atargatis und erschlug fünfundzwanzigtausend Menschen.
27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them, Judas removed the host toward Ephron, a strong city, wherein Lysias abode, and a great multitude of divers nations, and the strong young men kept the walls, and defended them mightily: wherein also was great provision of engines and darts.	27 Als sie geschlagen und vernichtet waren, rückte Judas vor das stark befestigte Efron, dessen große Einwohnerschaft sich aus vielen Völkern zusammensetzte. Junge und kräftige Männer standen vor den Mauern und wehrten sich tapfer. In der Stadt selbst war eine große Anzahl von Wurfmaschinen mit Geschossen aufgestellt.
28 But when Judas and his company had called upon Almighty God, who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies, they won the city, and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within,	28 Da riefen die Juden zum Herrn, der den Ansturm der Feinde mit Macht zermalmt; sie brachten die Stadt in ihre Gewalt und töteten in ihr etwa fünfundzwanzigtausend Menschen.
29 From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem,	29 Dann brachen sie auf und zogen in Eilmärschen von dort nach Skythopolis, das sechshundert Stadien von Jerusalem entfernt liegt.
30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them, and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity;	30 Die Juden, die dort wohnten, stellten jedoch den Einwohnern von Skythopolis das Zeugnis aus, sie seien freundlich zu ihnen und hätten ihnen in der bösen Zeit ihr Mitgefühl bewiesen.
31 They gave them thanks, desiring them to be friendly still unto them: and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks approaching.	31 Da bedankten sie sich und forderten sie auf, auch in Zukunft dem jüdischen Volk wohlgesinnt zu bleiben. Darauf begaben sie sich nach Jerusalem, da das Wochenfest unmittelbar bevorstand.
32 And after the feast, called Pentecost, they went forth against Gorgias the governor of Idumea,	32 Nach dem sogenannten Pfingstfest zogen sie in Eilmärschen gegen Gorgias, den Befehlshaber der Idumäer.
33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred horsemen.	33 Er rückte mit dreitausend Fußsoldaten und vierhundert Reitern aus.
34 And it happened that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain.	34 Als sie zum Kampf antraten, fielen einige von den Juden.
35 At which time Dositheus, one of Bacenor's company, who was on horseback, and a strong man, was still upon Gorgias, and taking hold of his coat drew him by force; and when he would have taken that cursed man alive, a horseman of Thracia coming upon him smote off his shoulder, so that Gorgias fled unto Marisa.	35 Dositheus, ein Reiter von den Leuten Bakenors, ein sehr starker Mann, packte Gorgias fest am Mantel und zog mit allen Kräften an ihm. Aber als er den Verfluchten lebendig gefangen nehmen wollte, preschte ein thrakischer Reiter heran und schlug ihm den Arm ab. Gorgias konnte sich nach Marescha flüchten.
36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord, that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battle.	36 Die Leute Esris kämpften weiter bis zur Erschöpfung. Da rief Judas zum Herrn, er solle als ihr Bundesgenosse und Bahnbrecher im Kampf erscheinen.
37 And with that he began in his own language, and sung psalms with a loud voice, and rushing unawares upon Gorgias' men, he put them to flight.	37 In der Sprache seiner Väter erhob er das Kriegsgeschrei und stimmte Preislieder an, drang unversehens auf die Leute des Gorgias ein und schlug sie in die Flucht.
38 So Judas gathered his host, and came into the city of Odollam, And when the seventh day came, they purified themselves, as the custom was, and kept the sabbath in the same place.	38 Daraufhin führte Judas das Heer in die Stadt Adullam. Als der siebte Tag der Woche anbrach, reinigten sie sich, wie es bei ihnen Brauch war, und begingen dort den Sabbat.
39 And upon the day following, as the use had been, Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers' graves.	39 Am nächsten Tag kamen die Leute des Judas, um die Leichen der Gefallenen zu überführen - es war inzwischen höchste Zeit geworden - und sie inmitten ihrer Angehörigen in den Familiengräbern zu bestatten.
40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites, which is forbidden the Jews by the law. Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain.	40 Da entdeckten sie, dass alle Toten unter ihren Kleidern Amulette der Götter von Jamnia trugen, obwohl das den Juden vom Gesetz her verboten ist. Da wurde allen klar, dass die Männer deswegen gefallen waren,
41 All men therefore praising the Lord, the righteous Judge, who had opened the things that were hid,	41 und sie priesen nun alle das Wirken des Herrn, des gerechten Richters, der das Verborgene ans Licht bringt.
42 Betook themselves unto prayer, and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance. Besides, that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain.	42 Anschließend hielten sie einen Bittgottesdienst ab und beteten, dass die begangene Sünde wieder völlig ausgelöscht werde. Der edle Judas aber ermahnte die Leute, sich von Sünden rein zu halten; sie hätten ja mit eigenen Augen gesehen, welche Folgen das Vergehen der Gefallenen gehabt habe.
43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachms of silver, he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering, doing therein very well and honestly, in that he was mindful of the resurrection:	43 Er veranstaltete eine Sammlung, an der sich alle beteiligten, und schickte etwa zweitausend Silberdrachmen nach Jerusalem, damit man dort ein Sündopfer darbringe. Damit handelte er sehr schön und edel; denn er dachte an die Auferstehung.
44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead.	44 Hätte er nicht erwartet, dass die Gefallenen auferstehen werden, wäre es nämlich überflüssig und sinnlos gewesen, für die Toten zu beten.
45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour laid up for those that died godly, it was an holy and good thought. Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.	45 Auch hielt er sich den herrlichen Lohn vor Augen, der für die hinterlegt ist, die in Frömmigkeit sterben. Ein heiliger und frommer Gedanke! Darum ließ er die Toten entsühnen, damit sie von der Sünde befreit werden.
