1 When these covenants were made, Lysias went unto the king, and the Jews were about their husbandry.	1 Una vez terminados estos tratados, Lisias se volvió junto al rey, mientras los judíos se entregaban a las labores del campo.
2 But of the governours of several places, Timotheus, and Apollonius the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and beside them Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to be quiet and live in peace.	2 Pero algunos de los estrategas en plaza, Timoteo y Apolonio, hijo de Genneo, y también Jerónimo y Demofón, además de Nicanor, el Chipriarca, no les dejaban vivir en paz ni disfrutar de sosiego.
3 The men of Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no hurt.	3 Los habitantes de Joppe, por su parte, perpetraron la enorme impiedad que sigue: invitaron a los judíos que vivían con ellos, a subir con mujeres y niños a las embarcaciones que habían preparado, como si no guardaran contra ellos ninguna enemistad.
4 Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city, as being desirous to live in peace, and suspecting nothing: but when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no less than two hundred of them.	4 Conforme a la común decisión de la ciudad, aceptaron los judíos, por mostrar sus deseos de vivir en paz y que no tenían el menor recelo; pero, cuando se hallaban en alta mar, los echaron al fondo, en número no inferior a doscientos.
5 When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countrymen, he commanded those that were with him to make them ready.	5 Cuando Judas se enteró de la crueldad cometida con sus compatriotas, se lo anunció a sus hombres;
6 And calling upon God the righteous Judge, he came against those murderers of his brethren, and burnt the haven by night, and set the boats on fire, and those that fled thither he slew.	6 y después de invocar a Dios, el justo juez, se puso en camino contra los asesinos de sus hermanos, incendió por la noche el puerto, quemó las embarcaciones y pasó a cuchillo a los que se habían refugiado allí.
7 And when the town was shut up, he went backward, as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppa.	7 Al encontrar cerrada la plaza, se retiró con la intención de volver de nuevo y exterminar por completo a la población de Joppe.
8 But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them,	8 Enterado de que también los de Yamnia querían actuar de la misma forma con los judíos que allí habitaban,
9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set fire on the haven and the navy, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and forty furlongs off.	9 atacó también de noche a los yamnitas e incendió el puerto y la flota, de modo que el resplandor de las llamas se veía hasta en Jerusalén y eso que había 240 estadios de distancia.
10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.	10 Marchando contra Timoteo, se alejaron de allí nueve estadios, cuando le atacaron no menos de 5.000 árabes y quinientos jinetes.
11 Whereupon there was a very sore battle; but Judas' side by the help of God got the victory; so that the Nomades of Arabia, being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising both to give him cattle, and to pleasure him otherwise.	11 En la recia batalla trabada, las tropas de Judas lograron la victoria, gracias al auxilio recibido de Dios; los nómadas, vencidos, pidieron a Judas que les diera la mano, prometiendo entregarle ganado y serle útiles en adelante.
12 Then Judas, thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things, granted them peace: whereupon they shook hands, and so they departed to their tents.	12 Judas, dándose cuenta de que verdaderamente en muchos casos podían ser de utilidad, consintió en hacer las paces con ellos; estrechada la mano se retiraron a las tiendas.
13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city, which was fenced about with walls, and inhabited by people of divers countries; and the name of it was Caspis.	13 Judas atacó también a cierta ciudad fortificada con terraplenes, rodeada de murallas, y habitada por una población mixta de varias naciones, por nombre Caspín.
14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals, that they behaved themselves rudely toward them that were with Judas, railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.	14 Los sitiados, confiados en la solidez de las murallas y en la provisión de víveres, trataban groseramente con insultos a los hombres de Judas, profiriendo además blasfemias y palabras sacrílegas.
15 Wherefore Judas with his company, calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without rams or engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua, gave a fierce assault against the walls,	15 Los hombres de Judas, después de invocar al gran Señor del mundo, que sin arietes ni máquinas de guerra había derruido a Jericó en tiempo de Josué, atacaron ferozmente la muralla.
16 And took the city by the will of God, and made unspeakable slaughters, insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoining thereunto, being filled full, was seen running with blood.	16 Una vez dueños de la ciudad por la voluntad de Dios, hicieron una indescriptible carnicería hasta el punto de que el lago vecino, con su anchura de dos estadios, parecía lleno con la sangre que le había llegado.
17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni.	17 Se alejaron de allí 750 estadios y llegaron a Járaca, donde los judíos llamados tubios.
18 But as for Timotheus, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched any thing, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.	18 Pero no encontraron en aquellos lugares a Timoteo, que al no lograr nada se había ido de allí, dejando con todo en determinado lugar una fortísima guarnición.
19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus' captains, went forth, and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.	19 Dositeo y Sosípatro, capitanes de Macabeo, en una incursión mataron a los hombres que Timoteo había dejado en la fortaleza, más de 10.000.
20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.	20 Macabeo distribuyó su ejército en cohortes, puso a aquellos dos a su cabeza y se lanzó contra Timoteo que tenía consigo 20.000 infantes y 2.500 jinetes.
21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas' coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.	21 Al enterarse Timoteo de la llegada de Judas, mandó por delante las mujeres, los niños y el resto de la impedimenta al sitio llamado Carnión; pues era un lugar inexpugnable y de acceso difícil, por la angostura de todos sus pasos.
22 But when Judas his first band came in sight, the enemies, being smitten with fear and terror through the appearing of him who seeth all things, fled amain, one running into this way, another that way, so as that they were often hurt of their own men, and wounded with the points of their own swords.	22 En cuanto apareció, la primera, la cohorte de Judas, se apoderó de los enemigos el miedo y el temor al manifestarse ente ellos Aquél que todo lo ve, y se dieron a la fuga cada cual por su lado, de modo que muchas veces eran heridos por sus propios compañeros y atravesados por las puntas de sus espadas.
23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them, killing those wicked wretches, of whom he slew about thirty thousand men.	23 Judas seguía tenazmente en su persecución, acuchillando a aquellos criminales; llegó a matar hasta 30.000 hombres.
24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater, whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life, because he had many of the Jews' parents, and the brethren of some of them, who, if they put him to death, should not be regarded.	24 El mismo Timoteo cayó en manos de los hombres de Dositeo y Sosípatro; les instaba con mucha palabrería que le dejaran ir salvo, pues alegaba tener en su poder a parientes entre los cuales había hermanos de muchos de ellos, de cuya vida nadie se cuidaría.
25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt, according to the agreement, they let him go for the saving of their brethren.	25 Cuando él garantizó, después de muchas palabras, la determinación de restituirlos sanos y salvos, le dejaron libre con ánimo de liberar a sus hermanos.
26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion, and to the temple of Atargatis, and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons.	26 Habiéndose dirigido al Carnión y al Atargateion, Judas dio muerte a 25.000 hombres.
27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them, Judas removed the host toward Ephron, a strong city, wherein Lysias abode, and a great multitude of divers nations, and the strong young men kept the walls, and defended them mightily: wherein also was great provision of engines and darts.	27 Después de haber derrotado (y destruido) a estos enemigos, dirigió una expedición contra la ciudad fuerte de Efrón, donde habitaba Lisanias, con una multitud de toda estirpe. Jóvenes vigorosos, apostados ante las murallas, combatían con valor; en el interior había muchas reservas de máquinas de guerra y proyectiles.
28 But when Judas and his company had called upon Almighty God, who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies, they won the city, and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within,	28 Después de haber invocado al Señor que aplasta con energía las fuerzas de los enemigos, los judíos se apoderaron de la ciudad y abatieron por tierra a unos 25.000 de los que estaban dentro.
29 From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem,	29 Partiendo de allí se lanzaron contra Escitópolis, ciudad que dista de Jerusalén sesenta estadios.
30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them, and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity;	30 Pero como los judíos allí establecidos atestiguaron que los habitantes de la ciudad habían sido benévolos con ellos y les habían dado buena acogida en los tiempos de desgracia,
31 They gave them thanks, desiring them to be friendly still unto them: and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks approaching.	31 Judas y los suyos se lo agradecieron y les exhortaron a que también en lo sucesivo se mostraran bien dispuestos con su raza. Llegaron a Jerusalén en la proximidad de la fiesta de las Semanas.
32 And after the feast, called Pentecost, they went forth against Gorgias the governor of Idumea,	32 Después de la fiesta llamada de Pentecostés, se lanzaron contra Gorgias, el estratega de Idumea.
33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred horsemen.	33 Salió éste con 3.000 infantes y cuatrocientos jinetes,
34 And it happened that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain.	34 y sucedió que cayeron algunos de los judíos que les habían presentado batalla.
35 At which time Dositheus, one of Bacenor's company, who was on horseback, and a strong man, was still upon Gorgias, and taking hold of his coat drew him by force; and when he would have taken that cursed man alive, a horseman of Thracia coming upon him smote off his shoulder, so that Gorgias fled unto Marisa.	35 Un tal Dositeo, jinete valiente, del cuerpo de los tubios, se apoderó de Gorgias, y agarrándole por la clámide, le arrastraba por la fuerza con el deseo de capturar vivo a aquel maldito; pero un jinete tracio se echó sobre Dositeo, le cortó el hombro, y Gorgias huyó hacia Marisá.
36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord, that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battle.	36 Ante la fatiga de los hombres de Esdrías que llevaban mucho tiempo luchando, Judas suplicó al Señor que se mostrase su aliado y su guía en el combate.
37 And with that he began in his own language, and sung psalms with a loud voice, and rushing unawares upon Gorgias' men, he put them to flight.	37 Entonó entonces en su lengua patria el grito de guerra y algunos himnos, irrumpió de improviso sobre las tropas de Gorgias y las derrotó.
38 So Judas gathered his host, and came into the city of Odollam, And when the seventh day came, they purified themselves, as the custom was, and kept the sabbath in the same place.	38 Judas, después de reorganizar el ejército, se dirigió hacia la ciudad de Odolam. Al llegar el día séptimo, se purificaron según la costumbre y celebraron allí el sábado.
39 And upon the day following, as the use had been, Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers' graves.	39 Al día siguiente, fueron en busca de Judas (cuando se hacía ya necesario), para recoger los cadáveres de los que habían caído y depositarlos con sus parientes en los sepulcros de sus padres.
40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites, which is forbidden the Jews by the law. Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain.	40 Entonces encontraron bajo las túnicas de cada uno de los muertos objetos consagrados a los ídolos de Yamnia, que la Ley prohíbe a los judíos. Fue entonces evidente para todos por qué motivo habían sucumbido aquellos hombres.
41 All men therefore praising the Lord, the righteous Judge, who had opened the things that were hid,	41 Bendijeron, pues, todos las obras del Señor, juez justo, que manifiesta las cosas ocultas,
42 Betook themselves unto prayer, and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance. Besides, that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain.	42 y pasaron a la súplica, rogando que quedara completamente borrado el pecado cometido. El valeroso Judas recomendó a la multitud que se mantuvieran limpios de pecado, a la vista de lo sucedido por el pecado de los que habían sucumbido.
43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachms of silver, he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering, doing therein very well and honestly, in that he was mindful of the resurrection:	43 Después de haber reunido entre sus hombres cerca de 2.000 dracmas, las mandó a Jerusalén para ofrecer un sacrificio por el pecado, obrando muy hermosa y noblemente, pensando en la resurrección.
44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead.	44 Pues de no esperar que los soldados caídos resucitarían, habría sido superfluo y necio rogar por los muertos;
45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour laid up for those that died godly, it was an holy and good thought. Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.	45 mas si consideraba que una magnífica recompensa está reservada a los que duermen piadosamente, era un pensamiento santo y piadoso.
	46 Por eso mandó hacer este sacrificio expiatorio en favor de los muertos, para que quedaran liberados del pecado.
