1 When these covenants were made, Lysias went unto the king, and the Jews were about their husbandry.	1 Une fois ces accords passés, Lysias retourna auprès du roi, et les Juifs retournèrent aux travaux des champs.
2 But of the governours of several places, Timotheus, and Apollonius the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and beside them Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to be quiet and live in peace.	2 Mais bien des chefs militaires de la région: Timothée, Apollonius fils de Généos, Hiéronyme, Démofon et Nicanor, le chef des mercenaires de Chypre, ne laissaient aux Juifs ni paix ni tranquillité.
3 The men of Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no hurt.	3 Par ailleurs, les habitants de Joppé commirent un crime odieux. Ils invitèrent les Juifs qui habitaient chez eux à monter avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants dans des barques qu’ils avaient préparées eux-mêmes;
4 Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city, as being desirous to live in peace, and suspecting nothing: but when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no less than two hundred of them.	4 cela répondait à un décret de la ville qui ne laissait voir aucune mauvaise intention. Les Juifs acceptèrent donc comme des gens qui veulent la paix et n’ont aucune méfiance; mais quand ils furent au large, on les fit couler par le fond. Ils étaient au moins 200.
5 When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countrymen, he commanded those that were with him to make them ready.	5 Dès que Judas apprit cette action cruelle commise contre des gens de sa nation, il le fit savoir à ses hommes.
6 And calling upon God the righteous Judge, he came against those murderers of his brethren, and burnt the haven by night, and set the boats on fire, and those that fled thither he slew.	6 Après avoir supplié Dieu, le juste Juge, il alla surprendre les meurtriers de ses frères. Il incendia le port pendant la nuit, il brûla toutes les barques et mit à mort tous ceux qui s’y étaient réfugiés.
7 And when the town was shut up, he went backward, as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppa.	7 La ville avait été fermée; il s’en alla donc, mais bien décidé à revenir pour mettre à mort tous les habitants de Joppé.
8 But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them,	8 Il apprit que les habitants de Jamnia voulaient faire la même chose aux Juifs qui habitaient chez eux.
9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set fire on the haven and the navy, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and forty furlongs off.	9 Alors, de nuit, il attaqua Jamnia, mettant le feu au port et aux bateaux; l’incendie était si grand, qu’on l’apercevait de Jérusalem, éloignée pourtant d’une cinquantaine de kilomètres.
10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.	10 De là ils marchèrent contre Timothée. Comme ils s’étaient déjà éloignés d’un ou deux kilomètres, des Arabes se jetèrent sur Judas avec au moins 5 000 hommes et 500 cavaliers.
11 Whereupon there was a very sore battle; but Judas' side by the help of God got the victory; so that the Nomades of Arabia, being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising both to give him cattle, and to pleasure him otherwise.	11 Le combat fut sérieux mais les hommes de Judas, grâce à l’aide que Dieu leur donnait, remportèrent la victoire. Les nomades vaincus demandèrent à Judas de lui tendre la main, ils promirent de livrer du bétail et de leur rendre des services à l’avenir.
12 Then Judas, thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things, granted them peace: whereupon they shook hands, and so they departed to their tents.	12 Judas pensa qu’ils pourraient être utiles pour bien des choses et il accepta de faire la paix avec eux. Les Arabes, après avoir fait la paix, se retirèrent sous leurs tentes.
13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city, which was fenced about with walls, and inhabited by people of divers countries; and the name of it was Caspis.	13 Judas attaqua encore une ville fortifiée protégée par des levées de terre et des remparts; elle était habitée par des païens, avec une population très mélangée, et s’appelait Kaspin.
14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals, that they behaved themselves rudely toward them that were with Judas, railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.	14 Ceux de l’intérieur comptaient sur la solidité des remparts et sur leurs réserves de nourriture. Ils se montraient grossiers envers Judas et ses hommes, ils les insultaient et blasphémaient, avec des paroles qu’on ne peut répéter.
15 Wherefore Judas with his company, calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without rams or engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua, gave a fierce assault against the walls,	15 Judas et ses hommes supplièrent alors le Grand Souverain du monde: il avait bien fait tomber Jéricho sans béliers ni machines de guerre au temps de Josué. Ensuite ils se jetèrent avec fureur contre le rempart.
16 And took the city by the will of God, and made unspeakable slaughters, insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoining thereunto, being filled full, was seen running with blood.	16 Ils s’emparèrent de la ville par la volonté de Dieu et ils y firent un massacre si incroyable que l’étang voisin, qui a plus de 100 mètres de large, semblait rempli de sang.
17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni.	17 Après une marche de 140 kilomètres environ, ils arrivèrent à Charax, dans le pays des Juifs Toubiens,
18 But as for Timotheus, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched any thing, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.	18 mais ils n’y trouvèrent pas Timothée. Il était parti sans avoir rien fait, mais il avait laissé en un certain point une garnison très forte.
19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus' captains, went forth, and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.	19 Dosithée et Sosipater, généraux de Maccabée, y firent une expédition et massacrèrent les 10 000 hommes que Timothée avait laissés dans cette place.
20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.	20 De son côté, Maccabée divisa son armée en bataillons et mit des chefs à leur tête, puis il se lança contre Timothée. Celui-ci avait avec lui 120 000 fantassins et 2 500 cavaliers.
21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas' coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.	21 Lorsque Timothée apprit l’avance de Judas, il renvoya les femmes, les enfants et le reste des bagages en un lieu appelé Karnion. C’était une forteresse imprenable, car les passages dans ce secteur sont très étroits, et l’accès en était difficile.
22 But when Judas his first band came in sight, the enemies, being smitten with fear and terror through the appearing of him who seeth all things, fled amain, one running into this way, another that way, so as that they were often hurt of their own men, and wounded with the points of their own swords.	22 Dès que l’avant-garde de Judas apparut, les ennemis furent remplis de peur; ils furent également effrayés par une manifestation de Celui qui voit tout, si bien qu’ils s’enfuirent de tous côtés. Ils se transperçaient les uns les autres et beaucoup furent blessés par leurs propres compagnons.
23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them, killing those wicked wretches, of whom he slew about thirty thousand men.	23 Judas les poursuivit sans relâche, il massacra ces bandits et fit périr plus de 30 000 hommes.
24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater, whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life, because he had many of the Jews' parents, and the brethren of some of them, who, if they put him to death, should not be regarded.	24 Timothée lui-même était tombé aux mains des hommes de Dosithée et de Sosipater. Il fut assez habile pour leur demander de le relâcher sain et sauf car, disait-il, il détenait les parents et les frères de beaucoup d’entre eux et il pourrait bien leur arriver malheur.
25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt, according to the agreement, they let him go for the saving of their brethren.	25 Aussi, quand il s’engagea après bien des paroles à renvoyer libres ces personnes, ils le relâchèrent pour sauver leurs frères.
26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion, and to the temple of Atargatis, and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons.	26 Judas fit une expédition à Karnion et à Atargatéion, il y égorgea 25 000 hommes.
27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them, Judas removed the host toward Ephron, a strong city, wherein Lysias abode, and a great multitude of divers nations, and the strong young men kept the walls, and defended them mightily: wherein also was great provision of engines and darts.	27 Après avoir mis en fuite ou détruit ses ennemis, Judas fit une expédition contre Éfron, ville fortifiée où habitait Lysanias. Des jeunes gens vigoureux, rangés au pied des murailles, combattaient avec courage, et à l’intérieur il y avait de nombreuses machines avec des réserves de projectiles.
28 But when Judas and his company had called upon Almighty God, who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies, they won the city, and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within,	28 Mais, après avoir supplié le Souverain qui brise par sa puissance la force des ennemis, les Juifs s’emparèrent de la ville et couchèrent sur le sol environ 25 000 hommes de ceux qui s’y trouvaient.
29 From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem,	29 Partant de là, ils se rendirent à Scythopolis, à une centaine de kilomètres de Jérusalem.
30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them, and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity;	30 Mais les Juifs qui y résidaient affirmèrent que les gens de Scythopolis s’étaient bien conduits envers eux et avaient eu pour eux bien des attentions aux jours de malheur.
31 They gave them thanks, desiring them to be friendly still unto them: and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks approaching.	31 Judas et ses hommes remercièrent les habitants de Scythopolis et les engagèrent à continuer dans leurs bonnes dispositions envers ceux de leur race. Après quoi ils furent de retour à Jérusalem peu de temps avant la fête des Semaines.
32 And after the feast, called Pentecost, they went forth against Gorgias the governor of Idumea,	32 Après cette fête, appelée Pentecôte, ils se lancèrent contre Gorgias, général de l’Idumée.
33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred horsemen.	33 Ce Gorgias s’avançait avec 3 000 fantassins et 400 cavaliers.
34 And it happened that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain.	34 On engagea la bataille et quelques Juifs tombèrent.
35 At which time Dositheus, one of Bacenor's company, who was on horseback, and a strong man, was still upon Gorgias, and taking hold of his coat drew him by force; and when he would have taken that cursed man alive, a horseman of Thracia coming upon him smote off his shoulder, so that Gorgias fled unto Marisa.	35 Un nommé Dosithée, un solide cavalier de la troupe de Bakenor, attrapa Gorgias en personne par sa pèlerine; il le tirait vigoureusement, car il voulait capturer vivant cet homme maudit, mais un cavalier thrace se jeta sur Dosithée et lui fendit l’épaule, ce qui permit à Gorgias de s’enfuir à Marisa.
36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord, that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battle.	36 Le combat se prolongeait et les hommes d’Esdrias tombaient de fatigue. Alors Judas supplia le Seigneur de se montrer, dans le combat, leur allié et leur guide.
37 And with that he began in his own language, and sung psalms with a loud voice, and rushing unawares upon Gorgias' men, he put them to flight.	37 À haute voix, dans la langue de ses pères, il poussa le cri de guerre et chanta des hymnes, puis il fondit à l’improviste sur les hommes de Gorgias et les mit en fuite.
38 So Judas gathered his host, and came into the city of Odollam, And when the seventh day came, they purified themselves, as the custom was, and kept the sabbath in the same place.	38 Judas emmena son armée jusqu’à la ville d’Odollam. Arrivé le septième jour de la semaine, ils se purifièrent selon la coutume et célébrèrent le sabbat en ce lieu.
39 And upon the day following, as the use had been, Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers' graves.	39 Le jour suivant, les hommes de Judas allèrent relever les corps de ceux qui étaient tombés au combat (il était grand temps) pour les déposer avec leurs parents dans les tombeaux de leurs pères.
40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites, which is forbidden the Jews by the law. Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain.	40 et voici qu’ils trouvèrent sous les tuniques de chacun des morts des objets consacrés aux idoles de Jamnia, ce qui est bien sûr interdit aux Juifs par la Loi. La raison pour laquelle ces hommes avaient succombé devenait évidente:
41 All men therefore praising the Lord, the righteous Judge, who had opened the things that were hid,	41 tous bénirent la conduite du Seigneur, le juste Juge, qui met au grand jour les choses cachées.
42 Betook themselves unto prayer, and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance. Besides, that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain.	42 Ils se mirent en prière, demandant que le péché commis soit complètement effacé. L’héroïque Judas encouragea l’assemblée à se garder de tout péché: ils venaient de voir de leurs propres yeux ce qui était arrivé à leurs compagnons, tombés à cause de leurs péchés.
43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachms of silver, he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering, doing therein very well and honestly, in that he was mindful of the resurrection:	43 Il fit alors parmi ses hommes une collecte qui rapporta environ 2 000 pièces; il les envoya à Jérusalem pour qu’on y offre un sacrifice pour le péché. C’était là un geste très beau et très noble, inspiré par la pensée de la résurrection.
44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead.	44 En effet, s’il n’avait pas cru que ceux qui étaient tombés ressusciteraient, il aurait été inutile et ridicule de prier pour des morts.
45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour laid up for those that died godly, it was an holy and good thought. Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.	45 Mais il pensait qu’une belle récompense était réservée à ceux qui se sont couchés dans la mort ayant la foi; c’était là une pensée sainte et en accord avec la foi. Il fit donc offrir ce sacrifice d’expiation pour les morts, afin qu’ils soient délivrés de leurs péchés.
