1 When these covenants were made, Lysias went unto the king, and the Jews were about their husbandry.	1 Concluidas las negociaciones, Lisias volvió adonde estaba el rey, mientras los judíos se dedicaban a los trabajos del campo.
2 But of the governours of several places, Timotheus, and Apollonius the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and beside them Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to be quiet and live in peace.	2 Pero algunos de los gobernadores locales, Timoteo y Apolonio, hijo de Geneo, además de Jerónimo y Demofón, y también Nicanor, jefe de los chipriotas, no los dejaban vivir tranquilos ni disfrutar de la paz.
3 The men of Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no hurt.	3 Algunos habitantes de Jope, por su parte, perpetraron un enorme crimen. En efecto, invitaron a los judíos que vivían con ellos a subir con sus mujeres e hijos a unas embarcaciones que habían equipado, disimulando las malas intenciones que tenían contra ellos.
4 Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city, as being desirous to live in peace, and suspecting nothing: but when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no less than two hundred of them.	4 Como se trataba de una decisión unánime de toda la ciudad, los judíos aceptaron la invitación, porque deseaban vivir en paz y no tenían ninguna sospecha. Pero una vez que estuvieron en alta mar, los tiraron al agua: así murieron alrededor de doscientos.
5 When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countrymen, he commanded those that were with him to make them ready.	5 Cuando Judas se enteró de la crueldad cometida contra los compatriotas, hizo saber a sus hombres lo que había pasado
6 And calling upon God the righteous Judge, he came against those murderers of his brethren, and burnt the haven by night, and set the boats on fire, and those that fled thither he slew.	6 y, después de invocar a Dios, el justo Juez, se dirigió contra los asesinos de sus hermanos; incendió el puerto durante la noche, prendió fuego a las embarcaciones e hizo perecer a los que se habían refugiado allí.
7 And when the town was shut up, he went backward, as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppa.	7 Como las puertas de la ciudad estaban cerradas, se retiró con la intención de volver y exterminar por completo la población de Jope.
8 But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them,	8 Informado, entre tanto, de que los de Iamnia maquinaban hacer algo parecido con los judíos que vivían allí,
9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set fire on the haven and the navy, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and forty furlongs off.	9 atacó también durante la noche a los iamnitas e incendió el puerto y la flota, de manera que el resplandor de las llamas se vio incluso en Jerusalén, a una distancia de casi cincuenta kilómetros.
10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.	10 Cuando estaba a dos kilómetros de allí, en una expedición contra Timoteo, lo atacaron unos árabes: eran no menos de cinco mil de a pie y quinientos jinetes.
11 Whereupon there was a very sore battle; but Judas' side by the help of God got the victory; so that the Nomades of Arabia, being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising both to give him cattle, and to pleasure him otherwise.	11 Se entabló una lucha encarnizada, y las tropas de Judas obtuvieron la victoria, gracias al auxilio de Dios. Los nómadas, derrotados, pidieron la paz a Judas, comprometiéndose a darles ganado y a ayudarlos en lo sucesivo.
12 Then Judas, thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things, granted them peace: whereupon they shook hands, and so they departed to their tents.	12 Judas, comprendiendo que podrían prestarle muchos servicios, accedió a hacer la paz con ellos y, después de estrecharse la mano, los árabes regresaron a sus campamentos.
13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city, which was fenced about with walls, and inhabited by people of divers countries; and the name of it was Caspis.	13 Luego atacó a una ciudad fortificada con terraplenes, rodeada de murallas y habitada por gente de diversas nacionalidades, que se llamaba Caspín.
14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals, that they behaved themselves rudely toward them that were with Judas, railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.	14 Los sitiados, confiando en la solidez de las murallas y en la reserva de víveres, trataban despectivamente a los hombres de Judas, insultándolos y profiriendo blasfemias y maldiciones.
15 Wherefore Judas with his company, calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without rams or engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua, gave a fierce assault against the walls,	15 Judas y sus compañeros –después de invocar al supremo Señor del universo que, sin arietes ni máquinas de guerra, derribó a Jericó en tiempos de Josué– asaltaron ferozmente la muralla.
16 And took the city by the will of God, and made unspeakable slaughters, insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoining thereunto, being filled full, was seen running with blood.	16 Y apoderándose de la ciudad, por la voluntad de Dios, realizaron una matanza indescriptible, hasta tal punto que el lago vecino, de quince metros de ancho, parecía colmado con la sangre que lo había inundado.
17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni.	17 Luego se alejaron de allí ciento cincuenta kilómetros y llegaron a Járaca, donde vivían los judíos llamados tubienos.
18 But as for Timotheus, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched any thing, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.	18 Pero no encontraron a Timoteo por aquellas regiones, porque en vista de que no conseguía nada, se había retirado de allí, no sin antes dejar en cierto lugar una guarnición bastante fuerte.
19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus' captains, went forth, and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.	19 Dositeo y Sosípatro, capitanes de Macabeo, avanzaron contra la fortaleza y mataron a los hombres que Timoteo había dejado en ella: eran más de diez mil.
20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.	20 Luego el Macabeo distribuyó su ejército en batallones; puso al frente a aquellos dos capitales y se dirigió contra Timoteo, que había reunido ciento veinte mil soldados y dos mil quinientos jinetes.
21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas' coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.	21 Al enterarse de que se acercaba Judas, Timoteo mandó que las mujeres y los niños, junto con el resto del equipaje, se adelantaran hasta la fortaleza llamada Carnión, que era inexpugnable y de difícil acceso, por lo accidentado del terreno.
22 But when Judas his first band came in sight, the enemies, being smitten with fear and terror through the appearing of him who seeth all things, fled amain, one running into this way, another that way, so as that they were often hurt of their own men, and wounded with the points of their own swords.	22 Apenas apareció el primer batallón de Judas, el pánico y el terror se apoderaron de los enemigos, porque se manifestó ante ellos Aquel que todo lo ve. Entonces huyeron en todas direcciones, de manera que muchas veces se herían unos a otros y se atravesaban entre ellos mismos con sus espadas.
23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them, killing those wicked wretches, of whom he slew about thirty thousand men.	23 Judas los perseguía implacablemente, acribillando a aquellos impíos, y así llegó a matar a unos treinta mil.
24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater, whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life, because he had many of the Jews' parents, and the brethren of some of them, who, if they put him to death, should not be regarded.	24 Timoteo, que cayó en manos de los hombres de Dositeo y Sosípatro, les pidió con mucha habilidad que lo dejaran en libertad, porque los padres y hermanos de muchos de ellos estaban en su poder y corrían el riesgo de ser ejecutados.
25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt, according to the agreement, they let him go for the saving of their brethren.	25 Cuando les aseguró con toda clase de argumentos que los devolvería sanos y salvos, lo pusieron en libertad, para salvar a sus hermanos.
26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion, and to the temple of Atargatis, and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons.	26 Después, Judas marchó contra Carnión y contra el templo de Atargatis y mató a veinticinco mil personas.
27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them, Judas removed the host toward Ephron, a strong city, wherein Lysias abode, and a great multitude of divers nations, and the strong young men kept the walls, and defended them mightily: wherein also was great provision of engines and darts.	27 Una vez derrotados y destruidos estos enemigos, Judas emprendió una campaña contra la plaza fuerte de Efrón, donde se había establecido Lisias con gente de todas partes. Jóvenes vigorosos apostados delante de las murallas combatían con vigor, y en el interior había muchas reservas de máquinas de guerra y proyectiles.
28 But when Judas and his company had called upon Almighty God, who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies, they won the city, and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within,	28 Después de invocar al Soberano que aplasta con su poder las fuerzas de los enemigos, los judíos se apoderaron de la ciudad y mataron allí a unas veinticinco mil personas.
29 From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem,	29 Partiendo de allí, avanzaron contra Escitópolis, que dista de Jerusalén unos ciento diez kilómetros.
30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them, and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity;	30 Pero los judíos que vivían allí les atestiguaron que los habitantes de la ciudad los habían tratado con benevolencia y les habían brindado una buena acogida en momentos de adversidad.
31 They gave them thanks, desiring them to be friendly still unto them: and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks approaching.	31 Entonces Judas y sus compañeros les dieron las gracias y los exhortaron a seguir siendo deferentes con sus compatriotas. Luego regresaron a Jerusalén, porque se acercaba la fiesta de las Semanas.
32 And after the feast, called Pentecost, they went forth against Gorgias the governor of Idumea,	32 Pasada la fiesta llamada de Pentecostés, se dirigieron contra Gorgias, gobernador de Idumea.
33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred horsemen.	33 Este salió a atacarlos con tres mil soldados y cuatrocientos jinetes,
34 And it happened that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain.	34 y cayeron en el combate algunos judíos.
35 At which time Dositheus, one of Bacenor's company, who was on horseback, and a strong man, was still upon Gorgias, and taking hold of his coat drew him by force; and when he would have taken that cursed man alive, a horseman of Thracia coming upon him smote off his shoulder, so that Gorgias fled unto Marisa.	35 Un tal Dositeo, valeroso jinete de las tropas de Bacenor, se apoderó de Gorgias y, tirándole de la capa, lo arrastraba con fuerza a fin de capturar vivo a aquel infame. Pero un jinete tracio se abalanzó sobre Dositeo y lo hirió por la espalda, y así Gorgias pudo huir hacia Marisa.
36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord, that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battle.	36 Como los hombres de Esdrín estaban extenuados por haber combatido durante mucho tiempo, Judas rogó al Señor que se manifestara como su aliado y su guía en el combate.
37 And with that he began in his own language, and sung psalms with a loud voice, and rushing unawares upon Gorgias' men, he put them to flight.	37 Y entonando en la lengua de sus padres un himno de guerra, cayó sorpresivamente sobre los hombres de Gorgias y los derrotó.
38 So Judas gathered his host, and came into the city of Odollam, And when the seventh day came, they purified themselves, as the custom was, and kept the sabbath in the same place.	38 Luego Judas reunió al ejército y se dirigió hacia la ciudad de Odolam. Como estaba ya próximo el séptimo día de la semana, se purificaron con los ritos de costumbre y celebraron el sábado en aquel lugar.
39 And upon the day following, as the use had been, Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers' graves.	39 Los hombres de Judas fueron al día siguiente –dado que el tiempo urgía– a recoger los cadáveres de los caídos para sepultarlos con sus parientes, en los sepulcros familiares.
40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites, which is forbidden the Jews by the law. Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain.	40 Entonces encontraron debajo de las túnicas de cada uno de los muertos objetos consagrados a los ídolos de Iamnia, que la Ley prohíbe tener a los judíos. Así se puso en evidencia para todos que esa era la causa por la que habían caído.
41 All men therefore praising the Lord, the righteous Judge, who had opened the things that were hid,	41 Todos bendijeron el proceder del Señor, el justo Juez, que pone de manifiesto las cosas ocultas,
42 Betook themselves unto prayer, and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance. Besides, that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain.	42 e hicieron rogativas pidiendo que el pecado cometido quedara completamente borrado. El noble Judas exhortó a la multitud a que se abstuvieran del pecado, ya que ellos habían visto con sus propios ojos lo que había sucedido a los caídos en el combate a causa de su pecado.
43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachms of silver, he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering, doing therein very well and honestly, in that he was mindful of the resurrection:	43 Y después de haber recolectado entre sus hombres unas dos mil dracmas, las envió a Jerusalén para que se ofreciera un sacrificio por el pecado. El realizó este hermoso y noble gesto con el pensamiento puesto en la resurrección,
44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead.	44 porque si no hubiera esperado que los caídos en la batalla iban a resucitar, habría sido inútil y superfluo orar por los difuntos.
45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour laid up for those that died godly, it was an holy and good thought. Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.	45 Además, él tenía presente la magnífica recompensa que está reservada a los que mueren piadosamente, y este es un pensamiento santo y piadoso. Por eso, mandó ofrecer el sacrificio de expiación por los muertos, para que fueran librados de sus pecados.
