1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.1 Joseph ward nach Ägypten gebracht. Der Hofbeamte des Pharao, Potiphar, der Oberste der Leibwache, ein Ägypter, kaufte ihn von den Ismaelitern, welche ihn dorthin gebracht hatten.
2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.2 Der Herr aber war mit Joseph, so daß er in allem Erfolg hatte. Er blieb im Hause seines ägyptischen Herrn.
3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.3 Sein Dienstherr aber sah, daß der Herr mit Joseph war und alles, was dieser tat, ihm gelingen ließ.
4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.4 Joseph fand Gnade in seinen Augen, und er erkor ihn zu seinem Leibdiener; ja, er machte ihn zu seinem Hausverwalter und übergab ihm alles, was er hatte.
5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.5 Von der Zeit an, als er ihn über sein Haus und all seinen Besitz gesetzt hatte, segnete der Herr das Haus des Ägypters um Josephs willen. Der Segen des Herrn war über allem, was er hatte, im Haus und auf dem Felde.
6 And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.6 Er gab alles in die Hand Josephs, kümmerte sich neben ihm um nichts als um die Speise, die er aß. Joseph aber war schön von Gestalt und Aussehen.
7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.7 Kurz darauf warf die Frau seines Herrn ihre Augen auf Joseph und sprach: "Lege dich zu mir hin!"
8 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;8 Er aber weigerte sich und sagte zur Frau seines Herrn: "Siehe, mein Herr kümmert sich neben mir um nichts, was in seinem Hause ist, und sein ganzes Besitztum hat er mir übergeben.
9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?9 Er selbst ist in diesem Hause nicht größer als ich. Nichts hat er mir vorenthalten als dich, weil du seine Frau bist. Wie sollte ich dieses große Unrecht tun und wider Gott sündigen?"
10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.10 Und obwohl sie tagtäglich auf Joseph einredete, hörte er nicht auf sie und legte sich nicht zu ihr, um mit ihr Umgang zu pflegen.
11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.11 Eines Tages nun kam Joseph in das Haus zur Arbeit. Niemand von den Hausangestellten war im Gebäude.
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.12 Da faßte sie ihn an seinem Kleide und sprach: "Lege dich zu mir!" Er aber ließ sein Kleid unter ihrer Hand und floh ins Freie.
13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,13 Als sie nun sah, daß er sein Kleid in ihrer Hand gelassen hatte und hinausgeflohen war,
14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:14 da rief sie die Hausangestellten und sprach zu ihnen: "Seht, da hat er uns einen Hebräer gebracht, daß er seinen Mutwillen mit uns treibe! Er kam nämlich zu mir, um bei mir zu liegen, ich aber habe mit lauter Stimme geschrieen.
15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.15 Als er nun hörte, daß ich meine Stimme erhob und schrie, da ließ er sein Kleid bei mir und floh hinaus ins Freie."
16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.16 Sie ließ sein Kleid neben sich liegen, bis sein Herr nach Hause kam.
17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:17 Da erzählte sie ihm die gleiche Geschichte und sprach: "Kam doch dieser hebräische Sklave, den du uns gebracht hast, um seinen Mutwillen mit mir zu treiben!
18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.18 Als ich aber meine Stimme erhob und schrie, da ließ er sein Kleid neben mir und floh ins Freie."
19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.19 Als sein Herr nun die Worte seiner Frau gehört hatte: "Ganz so wie ich erzählte, hat an mir dein Sklave getan", da ward er sehr zornig.
20 And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.20 Josephs Herr nahm ihn und ließ ihn ins Gefängnis an den Ort werfen, wo die Gefangenen des Königs eingesperrt waren. Dort saß er im Gefängnis.
21 But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.21 Der Herr aber war mit Joseph. Er machte ihn beliebt und ließ ihn Gnade finden beim Obersten des Gefängnisses.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.22 Dieser gab alle Gefangenen, die im Kerker waren, in die Hand Josephs. Alles, was man dort tat, geschah durch ihn.
23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.23 Der Gefängnisvorsteher kümmerte sich um nichts, was durch Joseph geschah. Denn der Herr war mit ihm, und alles, was er tat, ließ er wohlgeraten.
