KING JAMES BIBLEBIBLES DES PEUPLES
And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.1 Joseph avait donc été vendu en Égypte: Putifar, un Égyptien, fonctionnaire du Pharaon et chef des gardes, l’avait acheté aux Ismaélites qui l’avaient emmené là-bas.
And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.2 Mais Yahvé était avec Joseph, et il lui donna de réussir: il resta dans la maison de son maître l’Égyptien.
And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.3 Son maître remarqua que Yahvé était avec lui et faisait réussir tout ce qu’il entreprenait.
And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.4 Joseph fut donc bien apprécié de lui dans tout son service. Son maître en fit le chef de sa maison et lui confia toutes ses affaires.
And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.5 Lorsqu’il l’eut mis à la tête de sa maison et de tous ses biens, Yahvé bénit la maison de l’Égyptien à cause de Joseph, et la bénédiction de Yahvé s’étendit à tout ce qui lui appartenait, aussi bien dans la maison que dans les champs.
And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.6 Aussi, après avoir confié à Joseph tout ce qui lui appartenait, il ne s’occupait plus de rien, si ce n’est de sa propre nourriture. Or Joseph avait une belle allure et un beau visage.
And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.7 La femme de son maître s’éprit de lui et lui dit: “Couche avec moi!”
But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;8 Mais Joseph refusa et dit à la femme de son maître: “Mon maître me fait entièrement confiance pour tout ce qui regarde sa maison, il m’a confié tout ce qui lui appartient.
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?9 Il n’est pas plus écouté que moi dans cette maison, et il ne me refuse rien sinon toi, parce que tu es sa femme. Comment pourrais-je faire une chose pareille et pécher contre Dieu?”
And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.10 Tous les jours, elle redisait la même chose à Joseph, mais il ne l’écoutait pas: il refusait de se coucher à ses côtés et de se donner à elle.
And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.11 Or voici qu’un jour, quand il entrait dans la maison pour faire son travail, il n’y avait dans la maison aucun des serviteurs.
And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.12 Alors elle le saisit par son habit et lui dit: “Couche avec moi!” Mais il lui laissa son habit dans la main et sortit en courant.
And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,13 Quand elle vit qu’il s’était enfui dehors en lui laissant son habit dans la main,
That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:14 elle appela les gens de sa maison et leur dit: “Regardez! On nous a amené un Hébreu pour prendre du plaisir avec nous. Il s’est approché de moi pour coucher avec moi, mais j’ai crié de toutes mes forces.
And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.15 Quand il a entendu que j’élevais le ton et que je criais, il est sorti en courant et son habit m’est resté entre les mains.”
And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.16 Elle garda donc son habit à côté d’elle jusqu’au retour du maître à la maison.
And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:17 Et voici comment elle lui raconta les choses: “Le serviteur hébreu que tu nous a amené s’est approché de moi pour prendre son plaisir avec moi.
And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.18 Mais, lorsqu’il a entendu que j’élevais le ton et que je criais, il s’est enfui et son habit m’est resté entre les mains.”
And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.19 Lorsque son maître entendit le rapport de sa femme: “Et voilà ce qu’a fait ton serviteur!”, il se mit en colère.
And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.20 Il fit saisir Joseph et le fit jeter dans la prison où l’on enfermait les prisonniers du roi. C’est là que Joseph fut emprisonné.
But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.21 Mais Yahvé était avec Joseph, et il continua de le favoriser, de sorte que Joseph fut bien considéré par le chef de la prison.
And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.22 Celui-ci donna autorité à Joseph sur tous les prisonniers qui étaient enfermés là, et c’est lui qui leur faisait faire tout ce qu’il y avait à faire.
The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.23 Le chef de la prison ne contrôlait même plus tout ce que Joseph décidait, parce que Yahvé était avec lui, et tout ce qu’il entreprenait, Yahvé le lui faisait mener à bien.
