DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
The ancients therefore that are among you, I beseech, who am myself also an ancient, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ: as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come:1 So I exhort the presbyters among you, as a fellow presbyter and witness to the sufferings of Christ and one who has a share in the glory to be revealed.
Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint, but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre's sake, but voluntarily:2 Tend the flock of God in your midst, (overseeing) not by constraint but willingly, as God would have it, not for shameful profit but eagerly.
Neither as lording it over the clergy, but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart.3 Do not lord it over those assigned to you, but be examples to the flock.
And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory.4 And when the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
In like manner, ye young men, be subject to the ancients. And do you all insinuate humility one to another, for God resisteth the proud, but to the humble he giveth grace.5 Likewise, you younger members, be subject to the presbyters. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for: "God opposes the proud but bestows favor on the humble."
Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation:6 So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.
Casting all your care upon him, for he hath care of you.7 Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.
Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.8 Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for (someone) to devour.
Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls your brethren who are in the world.9 Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings.
But the God of all grace, who hath called us into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you, and confirm you, and establish you.10 The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ (Jesus) will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little.
To him be glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen.11 To him be dominion forever. Amen.
By Sylvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I think, I have written briefly: beseeching and testifying that this is the true grace of God, wherein you stand.12 I write you this briefly through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, exhorting you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Remain firm in it.
The church that is in Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you: and so doth my son Mark.13 The chosen one at Babylon sends you greeting, as does Mark, my son.
Salute one another with a holy kiss. Grace be to all you, who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.14 Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
