DOUAI-RHEIMSSacra Bibbia Garofalo
Be ye not many masters, my brethren, knowing that you receive the greater judgment.1 Non vogliate diventar maestri in troppi, fratelli miei, ben sapendo che noi ci attireremo un giudizio più severo.
For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man. He is able also with a bridle to lead about the whole body.2 In effetti, tutti inciampiamo spesso: se uno però non inciampa nella parola, costui è un uomo perfetto, capace anche di tenere a freno tutto il corpo.
For if we put bits into the mouths of horses, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.3 Ecco, noi mettiamo il freno in bocca ai cavalli per renderceli soggetti, e così governiamo tutto il loro corpo.
Behold also ships, whereas they are great, and are driven by strong winds, yet are they turned about with a small helm, whithersoever the force of the governor willeth.4 Anche le navi, per quanto siano così grandi e spinte da venti impetuosi sono manovrate da un minuscolo timone, dovunque vuole il gusto del capitano.
Even so the tongue is indeed a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how small a fire kindleth a great wood.5 Così pure la lingua è un piccolo membro, e va fiera di grandi imprese. Una favilla sì piccola appicca il fuoco ad una foresta sì grande!
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is placed among our members, which defileth the whole body, and inflameth the wheel of our nativity, being set on fire by hell.6 Anche la lingua: è, un fuoco, è un mondo di malizia. La lingua è posta in mezzo alle nostre membra e contamina tutto il corpo e infiamma la ruota della vita, traendo fiamma dalla Geenna.
For every nature of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of the rest, is tamed, and hath been tamed, by the nature of man:7 Ogni specie infatti di bestie e di uccelli di rettili: e di animali marini, viene domata e resa domestica dalla specie umana;
But the tongue no man can tame, an unquiet evil, full of deadly poison.8 ma la lingua nessuno tra gli uomini è capace di domarla; è un male irrequieto; ripiena di mortal veleno.
By it we bless God and the Father: and by it we curse men, who are made after the likeness of God.9 Con essa noi benediciamo il Signore e Padre e con essa malediciamo gli uomini fatti a immagine di Dio
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.10 dalla stessa bocca escono benedizione e maledizione. Questo non deve avvenire, fratelli miei.
Doth a fountain send forth, out of the same hole, sweet and bitter water?11 Forse che la fontana fa zampillare acqua dolce e amara dallo stesso foro?
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear grapes; or the vine, figs? So neither can the salt water yield sweet.12 Può forse, fratelli miei, un fico produrre olive o una vite dei fichi? Non più dell’acqua salata che non può produrre acqua dolce!
Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him shew, by a good conversation, his work in the meekness of wisdom.13 C'è qualcuno, tra voi, saggio ed esperto? Mostri, mediante una bella condotta, le opere sue con la dolcezza propria della saggezza:
But if you have bitter zeal, and there be contentions in your hearts; glory not, and be not liars against the truth.14 Ma se ha gelosia amara e ambizione nel cuor suo, non si glori e cessi di mentire contro la verità.
For this is not wisdom, descending from above: but earthly, sensual, devilish.15 Non è questa la sapienza che scende dall'alto; questa è terrestre, naturalistica, demoniaca;
For where envying and contention is, there is inconstancy, and every evil work.16 perché, là dove c'è gelosia e discordia, ivi è disordine e ogni specie di cattiveria.
But the wisdom, that is from above, first indeed is chaste, then peaceable, modest, easy to be persuaded, consenting to the good, full of mercy and good fruits, without judging, without dissimulation.17 La sapienza invece, che è dall’alto, è innanzitutto pura, poi pacifica, indulgente, arrendevole, ripiena di misericordia e di buoni frutti, senza doppiezza e ipocrisia:
And the fruit of justice is sown in peace, to them that make peace.18 Un frutto di giustizia è seminato nella pace per coloro che operano la pace.
