1 Be ye not many masters, my brethren, knowing that you receive the greater judgment.	1 Ne soyez pas nombreux, mes frères, à devenir docteurs. Vous le savez, nous n'en recevrons qu'unjugement plus sévère,
2 For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man. He is able also with a bridle to lead about the whole body.	2 car à maintes reprises nous commettons des écarts, tous sans exception. Si quelqu'un ne commet pasd'écart de paroles, c'est un homme parfait, il est capable de refréner tout son corps.
3 For if we put bits into the mouths of horses, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.	3 Quand nous mettons aux chevaux un mors dans la bouche, pour nous en faire obéir, nous dirigeonstout leur corps.
4 Behold also ships, whereas they are great, and are driven by strong winds, yet are they turned about with a small helm, whithersoever the force of the governor willeth.	4 Voyez encore les vaisseaux: si grands qu'ils soient, même poussés par des vents violents, ils sontdirigés par un tout petit gouvernail, au gré du pilote.
5 Even so the tongue is indeed a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how small a fire kindleth a great wood.	5 De même la langue est un membre minuscule et elle peut se glorifier de grandes choses! Voyez quelpetit feu embrase une immense forêt:
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is placed among our members, which defileth the whole body, and inflameth the wheel of our nativity, being set on fire by hell.	6 la langue aussi est un feu. C'est le monde du mal, cette langue placée parmi nos membres: ellesouille tout le corps; elle enflamme le cycle de la création, enflammée qu'elle est par la Géhenne.
7 For every nature of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of the rest, is tamed, and hath been tamed, by the nature of man:	7 Bêtes sauvages et oiseaux, reptiles et animaux marins de tout genre sont domptés et ont été domptéspar l'homme.
8 But the tongue no man can tame, an unquiet evil, full of deadly poison.	8 La langue, au contraire, personne ne peut la dompter: c'est un fléau sans repos. Elle est pleine d'unvenin mortel.
9 By it we bless God and the Father: and by it we curse men, who are made after the likeness of God.	9 Par elle nous bénissons le Seigneur et Père, et par elle nous maudissons les hommes faits à l'imagede Dieu.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.	10 De la même bouche sortent la bénédiction et la malédiction. Il ne faut pas, mes frères, qu'il en soitainsi.
11 Doth a fountain send forth, out of the same hole, sweet and bitter water?	11 La source fait-elle jaillir par la même ouverture le doux et l'amer?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear grapes; or the vine, figs? So neither can the salt water yield sweet.	12 Un figuier, mes frères, peut-il donner des olives, ou une vigne des figues? L'eau de mer ne peut pasnon plus donner de l'eau douce.
13 Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him shew, by a good conversation, his work in the meekness of wisdom.	13 Est-il quelqu'un de sage et d'expérimenté parmi vous? Qu'il fasse voir par une bonne conduite desactes empreints de douceur et de sagesse.
14 But if you have bitter zeal, and there be contentions in your hearts; glory not, and be not liars against the truth.	14 Si vous avez au coeur, au contraire, une amère jalousie et un esprit de chicane, ne vous vantez pas,ne mentez pas contre la vérité.
15 For this is not wisdom, descending from above: but earthly, sensual, devilish.	15 Pareille sagesse ne descend pas d'en haut: elle est terrestre, animale, démoniaque.
16 For where envying and contention is, there is inconstancy, and every evil work.	16 Car, où il y a jalousie et chicane, il y a désordre et toutes sortes de mauvaises actions.
17 But the wisdom, that is from above, first indeed is chaste, then peaceable, modest, easy to be persuaded, consenting to the good, full of mercy and good fruits, without judging, without dissimulation.	17 Tandis que la sagesse d'en haut est tout d'abord pure, puis pacifique, indulgente, bienveillante,pleine de pitié et de bons fruits, sans partialité, sans hypocrisie.
18 And the fruit of justice is sown in peace, to them that make peace.	18 Un fruit de justice est semé dans la paix pour ceux qui produisent la paix.
