1 For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea.	1 Car je ne veux pas que vous ignoriez, mes frères, que nos pères ont tous été sous la nuée, qu'ils ont tous passé (à travers) la mer,
2 And all in Moses were baptized, in the cloud, and in the sea:	2 qu'ils ont tous été baptisés en Moïse, dans la nuée et dans la mer,
3 And did all eat the same spiritual food,	3 qu'ils ont tous mangé le même aliment spirituel,
4 And all drank the same spiritual drink; (and they drank of the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.)	4 et qu'ils ont tous bu le même breuvage spirituel (car ils buvaient au rocher spirituel qui les suivait, et ce rocher était le Christ).
5 But with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the desert.	5 Cependant la plupart d'entre eux ne furent point agréables à Dieu, car ils tombèrent inanimés dans le désert.
6 Now these things were done in a figure of us, that we should not covet evil things as they also coveted.	6 Or ces évènements ont eu lieu comme des figures de ce qui nous concerne, afin que nous ne convoitions pas les choses mauvaises, comme ils les convoitèrent.
7 Neither become ye idolaters, as some of them, as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.	7 Ne devenez pas non plus idolâtres, comme quelques-uns d'entre eux, ainsi qu'il est écrit : Le peuple s'assit pour manger et pour boire, et ils se levèrent pour se divertir.
8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and there fell in one day three and twenty thousand.	8 Ne nous livrons pas à l'impudicité (la fornication), comme quelques-uns d'entre eux s'y livrèrent, et il en tomba vingt-trois mille en un seul jour.
9 Neither let us tempt Christ: as some of them tempted, and perished by the serpents.	9 Ne tentons pas le Christ, comme quelques-uns d'entre eux le tentèrent, et ils périrent par les serpents.
10 Neither do you murmur: as some of them murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.	10 Ne murmurez point, comme murmurèrent quelques-uns d'entre eux, et ils périrent par l'exterminateur.
11 Now all these things happened to them in figure: and they are written for our correction, upon whom the ends of the world are come.	11 Or toutes ces choses leur arrivaient en figure ; et elles ont été écrites pour notre instruction, à nous pour qui est venue la fin des siècles (temps).
12 Wherefore he that thinketh himself to stand, let him take heed lest he fall.	12 Ainsi donc, que celui qui croit être debout prenne garde de tomber.
13 Let no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human. And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it.	13 Qu'il ne vous survienne que des tentations humaines. Dieu est fidèle, et il ne souffrira pas que vous soyez tentés au-delà de vos forces ; mais avec la tentation il vous donnera aussi le moyen d'en sortir (il vous fera tirer profit de la tentation même), afin que vous puissiez la supporter.
14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, fly from the service of idols.	14 C'est pourquoi, mes bien-aimés, fuyez l'idolâtrie.
15 I speak as to wise men: judge ye yourselves what I say.	15 Je parle comme à des hommes intelligents (sages) ; jugez vous-mêmes de ce que je dis.
16 The chalice of benediction, which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ ? And the bread, which we break, is it not the partaking of the body of the Lord ?	16 Le calice de bénédiction, que nous bénissons, n'est-il pas la communion au (communication du) sang du Christ ? et le pain que nous rompons n'est-il pas la communion au corps du Seigneur ?
17 For we, being many, are one bread, one body, all that partake of one bread.	17 Car, quoique nombreux, nous ne sommes qu'un seul pain et un seul corps, nous tous qui participons à un même pain.
18 Behold Israel according to the flesh: are not they, that eat of the sacrifices, partakers of the altar ?	18 Voyez Israël selon la chair : ceux qui mangent les victimes ne participent-ils pas à l'autel ?
19 What then ? Do I say, that what is offered in sacrifice to idols, is any thing ? Or, that the idol is any thing ?	19 Quoi donc ? Veux-je dire que ce qui a été immolé aux idoles soit quelque chose, ou que l'idole soit quelque chose ?
20 But the things which the heathens sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God. And I would not that you should be made partakers with devils.	20 Non ; mais ce que les païens (gentils) immolent, ils l'immolent aux démons, et non à Dieu. Or je ne veux pas que vous soyez en société avec les démons. Vous ne pouvez pas boire le calice du Seigneur, et le calice des démons.
21 You cannot drink the chalice of the Lord, and the chalice of devils: you cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord, and of the table of devils.	21 Vous ne pouvez pas participer à la table du Seigneur, et à la table des démons.
22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy ? Are we stronger than he? All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient.	22 Voulons-nous provoquer la jalousie du Seigneur ? Est-ce que nous sommes plus forts que lui ? Tout m'est permis, mais tout n'est (ne m') pas avantageux.
23 All things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.	23 Tout m'est permis, mais tout n'édifie pas.
24 Let no man seek his own, but that which is another's.	24 Que personne ne cherche son propre intérêt, mais celui des autres.
25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat; asking no question for conscience' sake.	25 Mangez de tout ce qui se vend au marché (à la boucherie), sans vous enquérir de rien par scrupule de conscience.
26 The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.	26 La terre est au Seigneur, et tout ce qu'elle contient.
27 If any of them that believe not, invite you, and you will be willing to go; eat of any thing that is set before you, asking no question for conscience' sake.	27 Si quelqu'un des infidèles vous invite, et que vous vouliez y aller, mangez de tout ce qu'on vous servira, sans vous enquérir de rien par scrupule de conscience.
28 But if any man say: This has been sacrificed to idols, do not eat of it for his sake that told it, and for conscience' sake.	28 Mais si quelqu'un dit : Ceci a été immolé aux idoles ; n'en mangez pas, à cause de celui qui a donné l'avertissement, et à cause de leur (par) conscience ;
29 Conscience, I say, not thy own, but the other's. For why is my liberty judged by another man's conscience ?	29 je dis la conscience, non pas la tienne, mais celle d'autrui. Car pourquoi ma liberté serait-elle jugée par la conscience d'un autre ?
30 If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I evil spoken of, for that for which I give thanks ?	30 Si je mange avec action de grâces, pourquoi serais-je blâmé (me laisserais-je maudire) au sujet d'une chose dont je rends grâces ?
31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever else you do, do all to the glory of God.	31 Soit donc que vous mangiez, soit que vous buviez, soit que vous fassiez quelque autre chose, faites tout pour la gloire de Dieu.
32 Be without offence to the Jews, and to the Gentiles, and to the church of God:	32 Ne soyez une occasion de scandale ni aux Juifs, ni aux païens (gentils), ni à l'église de Dieu ;
33 As I also in all things please all men, not seeking that which is profitable to myself, but to many, that may be saved.	33 comme moi-même je cherche à plaire à tous en toutes choses, ne cherchant pas ce qui m'est avantageux, mais ce qui l'est au plus grand nombre, pour qu'ils soient sauvés.
