DOUAI-RHEIMSNOVA VULGATA
Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,1 Tunc Iesus locutus est ad turbas et ad discipulos suos
Saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses.2 dicens: “Super cathedram Moysis sederunt scribae et pharisaei.
All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not; for they say, and do not.3 Omnia ergo, quaecumquedixerint vobis, facite et servate; secundum opera vero eorum nolite facere:dicunt enim et non faciunt.
For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens, and lay them on men's shoulders; but with a finger of their own they will not move them.4 Alligant autem onera gravia et importabilia etimponunt in umeros hominum, ipsi autem digito suo nolunt ea movere.
And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge their fringes.5 Omnia veroopera sua faciunt, ut videantur ab hominibus: dilatant enim phylacteria sua etmagnificant fimbrias,
And they love the first places at feasts, and the first chairs in the synagogues,6 amant autem primum recubitum in cenis et primascathedras in synagogis
And salutations in the market place, and to be called by men, Rabbi.7 et salutationes in foro et vocari ab hominibus Rabbi.
But be not you called Rabbi. For one is your master; and all you are brethren.8 Vos autem nolite vocari Rabbi; unus enim est Magister vester, omnes autem vosfratres estis.
And call none your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven.9 Et Patrem nolite vocare vobis super terram, unus enim est Patervester, caelestis.
Neither be ye called masters; for one is you master, Christ.10 Nec vocemini Magistri, quia Magister vester unus est,Christus.
He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant.11 Qui maior est vestrum, erit minister vester.
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.12 Qui autem seexaltaverit, humiliabitur; et, qui se humiliaverit, exaltabitur.
But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men, for you yourselves do not enter in; and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter.13 Vae autem vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, quia clauditis regnumcaelorum ante homines! Vos
enim non intratis nec introeuntes sinitis intrare.
Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: because you devour the houses of widows, praying long prayers. For this you shall receive the greater judgment.14
Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you go round about the sea and the land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, you make him the child of hell twofold more than yourselves.15 Vae vobis, scribae etpharisaei hypocritae, quia circuitis mare et aridam, ut faciatis unumproselytum, et cum fuerit factus, facitis eum filium gehennae duplo quam vos!
Woe to you blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but he that shall swear by the gold of the temple, is a debtor.16 Vae vobis, duces caeci, qui dicitis: “Quicumque iuraverit per templum, nihil est; quicumque autem iuraverit in auro templi, debet”.
Ye foolish and blind; for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?17 Stulti etcaeci! Quid enim maius est: aurum an templum, quod sanctificat aurum?
And whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, is a debtor.18 Et: “Quicumqueiuraverit in altari, nihil est; quicumque autem iuraverit in dono, quod estsuper illud, debet”.
Ye blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?19 Caeci! Quid enim maius est: donum an altare, quodsanctificat donum?
He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things that are upon it:20 Qui ergo iuraverit in altari, iurat in eo et in omnibus,quae super illud sunt;
And whosoever shall swear by temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth in it:21 et, qui iuraverit in templo, iurat in illo et in eo,qui inhabitat in ipso;
And he that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.22 et, qui iuraverit in caelo, iurat in throno Dei et ineo, qui sedet super eum.
Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and have left the weightier things of the law; judgment, and mercy, and faith. These things you ought to have done, and not to leave those undone.23 Vae vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, quia decimatis mentam et anethumet cyminum et reliquistis, quae graviora sunt legis: iudicium et misericordiamet fidem! Haec oportuit facere et illa non omittere.
Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.24 Duces caeci, excolantesculicem, camelum autem glutientes.
Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within you are full of rapine and uncleanness.25 Vae vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, quia mundatis, quod de foris estcalicis et paropsidis, intus autem pleni sunt rapina et immunditia!
Thou blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside may become clean.26 Pharisaeecaece, munda prius, quod intus est calicis, ut fiat et id, quod de foris eiusest, mundum.
Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you are like to whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear to men beautiful, but within are full of dead men's bones, and of all filthiness.27 Vae vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, quia similes estis sepulcrisdealbatis, quae a foris quidem parent speciosa, intus vero plena sunt ossibusmortuorum et omni spurcitia!
So you also outwardly indeed appear to men just; but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.28 Sic et vos a foris quidem paretis hominibusiusti, intus autem pleni estis hypocrisi et iniquitate.
Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; that build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the just,29 Vae vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, qui aedificatis sepulcraprophetarum et ornatis monumenta iustorum
And say: If we had been in the days of our Fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.30 et dicitis: “Si fuissemus indiebus patrum nostrorum, non essemus socii eorum in sanguine prophetarum”!
Wherefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the sons of them that killed the prophets.31 Itaque testimonio estis vobismetipsis quia filii estis eorum, qui prophetasocciderunt.
Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.32 Et vos implete mensuram patrum vestrorum.
You serpents, generation of vipers, how will you flee from the judgment of hell?33 Serpentes, geniminaviperarum, quomodo fugietis a iudicio gehennae?
Therefore behold I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them you will put to death and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:34 Ideo ecce ego mitto ad vosprophetas et sapientes et scribas; ex illis occidetis et crucifigetis et ex eisflagellabitis in synagogis vestris et persequemini de civitate in civitatem,
That upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just, even unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar.35 ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis iustus, qui effusus est super terram asanguine Abel iusti usque ad sanguinem Zachariae filii Barachiae, quemoccidistis inter templum et altare.
Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.36 Amen dico vobis: Venient haec omnia supergenerationem istam.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children, as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldest not?37 Ierusalem, Ierusalem, quae occidis prophetas et lapidas eos, qui ad te missisunt, quotiens volui congregare filios tuos, quemadmodum gallina congregatpullos suos sub alas, et noluistis!
Behold, you house shall be left to you, desolate.38 Ecce relinquitur vobis domus vestradeserta!
For I say to you, you shall not see me henceforth till you say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.39 Dico enim vobis: Non me videbitis amodo, donec dicatis:"Benedictus, qui venit in nomine Dominil" ”.
