1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,	1 Entonces Jesús se dirigió a la gente y a sus discípulos
2 Saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses.	2 y les dijo: «En la cátedra de Moisés se han sentado los escribas y los fariseos.
3 All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not; for they say, and do not.	3 Haced, pues, y observad todo lo que os digan; pero no imitéis su conducta, porque dicen y no hacen.
4 For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens, and lay them on men's shoulders; but with a finger of their own they will not move them.	4 Atan cargas pesadas y las echan a las espaldas de la gente, pero ellos ni con el dedo quieren moverlas.
5 And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge their fringes.	5 Todas sus obras las hacen para ser vistos por los hombres; se hacen bien anchas las filacterias y bien largas las orlas del manto;
6 And they love the first places at feasts, and the first chairs in the synagogues,	6 quieren el primer puesto en los banquetes y los primeros asientos en las sinagogas,
7 And salutations in the market place, and to be called by men, Rabbi.	7 que se les salude en las plazas y que la gente les llame “Rabbí”.
8 But be not you called Rabbi. For one is your master; and all you are brethren.	8 «Vosotros, en cambio, no os dejéis llamar “Rabbí”, porque uno solo es vuestro Maestro; y vosotros sois todos hermanos.
9 And call none your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven.	9 Ni llaméis a nadie “Padre” vuestro en la tierra, porque uno solo es vuestro Padre: el del cielo.
10 Neither be ye called masters; for one is you master, Christ.	10 Ni tampoco os dejéis llamar “Directores”, porque uno solo es vuestro Director: el Cristo.
11 He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant.	11 El mayor entre vosotros será vuestro servidor.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.	12 Pues el que se ensalce, será humillado; y el que se humille, será ensalzado.
13 But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men, for you yourselves do not enter in; and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter.	13 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que cerráis a los hombres el Reino de los Cielos! Vosotros ciertamente no entráis; y a los que están entrando no les dejáis entrar.
14 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: because you devour the houses of widows, praying long prayers. For this you shall receive the greater judgment.
15 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you go round about the sea and the land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, you make him the child of hell twofold more than yourselves.	15 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que recorréis mar y tierra para hacer un prosélito, y, cuando llega a serlo, le hacéis hijo de condenación el doble que vosotros!
16 Woe to you blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but he that shall swear by the gold of the temple, is a debtor.	16 «¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos, que decís: “Si uno jura por el Santuario, eso no es nada; mas si jura por el oro del Santuario, queda obligado!”
17 Ye foolish and blind; for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?	17 ¡Insensatos y ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante, el oro, o el Santuario que hace sagrado el oro?
18 And whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, is a debtor.	18 Y también: “Si uno jura por el altar, eso no es nada; mas si jura por la ofrenda que está sobre él, queda obligado.”
19 Ye blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?	19 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante, la ofrenda, o el altar que hace sagrada la ofrenda?
20 He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things that are upon it:	20 Quien jura, pues, por el altar, jura por él y por todo lo que está sobre él.
21 And whosoever shall swear by temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth in it:	21 Quien jura por el Santuario, jura por él y por Aquel que lo habita.
22 And he that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.	22 Y quien jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios y por Aquel que está sentado en él.
23 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and have left the weightier things of the law; judgment, and mercy, and faith. These things you ought to have done, and not to leave those undone.	23 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que pagáis el diezmo de la menta, del aneto y del comino, y descuidáis lo más importante de la Ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fe! Esto es lo que había que practicar, aunque sin descuidar aquello.
24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.	24 ¡Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito y os tragáis el camello!
25 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within you are full of rapine and uncleanness.	25 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que purificáis por fuera la copa y el plato, mientras por dentro están llenos de rapiña e intemperancia!
26 Thou blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside may become clean.	26 ¡Fariseo ciego, purifica primero por dentro la copa, para que también por fuera quede pura!
27 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you are like to whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear to men beautiful, but within are full of dead men's bones, and of all filthiness.	27 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, pues sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera parecen bonitos, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda inmundicia!
28 So you also outwardly indeed appear to men just; but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.	28 Así también vosotros, por fuera aparecéis justos ante los hombres, pero por dentro estáis llenos de hipocresía y de iniquidad.
29 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; that build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the just,	29 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,
30 And say: If we had been in the days of our Fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.	30 y decís: “Si nosotros hubiéramos vivido en el tiempo de nuestros padres, no habríamos tenido parte con ellos en la sangre de los profetas!”
31 Wherefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the sons of them that killed the prophets.	31 Con lo cual atestiguáis contra vosotros mismos que sois hijos de los que mataron a los profetas.
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.	32 ¡Colmad también vosotros la medida de vuestros padres!
33 You serpents, generation of vipers, how will you flee from the judgment of hell?	33 «¡Serpientes, raza de víboras! ¿Cómo vais a escapar a la condenación de la gehenna?
34 Therefore behold I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them you will put to death and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:	34 Por eso, he aquí que yo envío a vosotros profetas, sabios y escribas: a unos los mataréis y los crucificaréis, a otros los azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas y los perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad,
35 That upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just, even unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar.	35 para que caiga sobre vosotros toda la sangre inocente derramada sobre la tierra, desde la sangre del inocente Abel hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Baraquías, a quien matasteis entre el Santuario y el altar.
36 Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.	36 Yo os aseguro: todo esto recaerá sobre esta generación.
37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children, as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldest not?	37 «¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, la que mata a los profetas y apedrea a los que le son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces he querido reunir a tus hijos, como una gallina reúne a sus pollos bajo las alas, y no habéis querido!
38 Behold, you house shall be left to you, desolate.	38 Pues bien, se os va a dejar desierta vuestra casa.
39 For I say to you, you shall not see me henceforth till you say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.	39 Porque os digo que ya no me volveréis a ver hasta que digáis: ¡Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor!»
