Douai-Rheims Le Sainte Bible Vigouroux
Strengthen yourselves, ye sons of Benjamin, in the midst of Jerusalem, and sound the trumpet in Thecua, and set up the standard over Bethacarem: for evil is seen out of the north, and a great destruction.1 Fortifiez-vous, enfants de Benjamin, au milieu de Jérusalem ; sonnez de la trompette à Thécua, et levez l'étendard sur Béthcarem, car on voit venir (a vu) du côté de l'aquilon le (un) mal(heur) et une grande ruine (destruction).
I have likened the daughter of Sion to a beautiful and delicate woman.2 J'ai comparé la fille de Sion à une femme belle et délicate.
The shepherds shall come to her with their flocks: they have pitched their tents against her round about: every one shall feed them that are under his hand.3 Vers elle viendront les pasteurs avec leurs troupeaux, ils dresseront leurs tentes autour d'elle, et chacun fera paître ceux qui seront sous sa charge.
Prepare ye war against her: arise, and let us go up at midday: woe unto us, for the day is declined, for the shadows of the evening are grown longer.4 Préparez la guerre contre elle; levez-vous, et montons en plein midi; malheur à nous, car le jour baisse, et les ombres du soir se sont allongées.
Arise, and let us go up in the night, and destroy her houses.5 Levez-vous et montons pendant la nuit, et renversons ses maisons.
For thus saith the Lord of hosts: Hew down her trees, cast up a trench about Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited, all oppression is in the midst of her.6 Car voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées : Abattez ses arbres, et dressez un retranchement (rempart) autour de Jérusalem.
As a cistern maketh its water cold, so hath she made her wickedness cold: violence and spoil shall be heard in her, infirmity and stripes are continually before me.7 Comme la citerne rafraîchit son eau, ainsi elle a rafraîchi sa malice.
Thus saith the Lord of hosts: They shall gather the remains of Israel, as in a vine, even to one cluster: turn back thy hand, as a grape gatherer into the basket.9 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées : Comme on cueille dans une vigne jusqu'à la dernière grappe, ainsi recueillera-t-on les restes d'Israël.
To whom shall I speak? and to whom shall I testify, that he may hear? behold, their ears are uncircumcised, and they cannot hear: behold the word of the Lord is become unto them a reproach: and and they will not receive it.10 A qui parlerai-je, et qui conjurerai-je de m'écouter?
Therefore am I full of the fury of the Lord, I am weary with holding in: pour it out upon the child abroad, and upon the council of the young men together: for man and woman shall be taken, the ancient and he that is full of days.11 C'est pourquoi je suis plein de la fureur du Seigneur, je me suis fatigué à la contenir.
And their houses shall be turned over to others, with their lands and their wives together: for I will stretch for my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the Lord.12 Leurs maisons passeront à des étrangers, leurs champs et leurs femmes aussi; car J'étendrai Ma main sur les habitants du pays, dit le Seigneur.
For from the least of them even to the greatest, all are given to covetousness: and from the prophet even to the priest, all are guilty of deceit.13 Car depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, tous se livrent à l'avarice, et depuis le prophète jusqu'au prêtre tous s'appliquent à la fraude (tromperie).
And they healed the breach of the daughter of my people disgracefully, saying: Peace, peace: and there was no peace.14 Ils soignaient (guérissaient) d'une manière honteuse les plaies de la fille de mon peuple, en disant : La paix, la paix, lorsqu'il n'y avait pas de paix.
They were confounded, because they commmitted abomination: yea, rather they were not confounded with confusion, and they knew not how to blush: wherefore they shall fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall fall down, saith the Lord.15 Ils ont été confus, parce qu'ils ont fait des choses abominables; puis alors la confusion même n'a pu les confondre, et ils n'ont pas su rougir.
Thus saith the Lord: Stand ye on the ways, and see and ask for the old paths which is the good way, and walk ye in it: and you shall find refreshment for your souls.
And I appointed watchmen over you, saying: Hearken ye to the sound of the trumpet.
Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what great things I will do to them.18 C'est pourquoi écoutez, nations; et sache, assemblée des peuples, tout ce que Je leur ferai.
Hear, O earth: Behold I will bring evils upon this people, the fruits of their own thoughts: because they have not heard my words, and they have cast away my law.19 Ecoute, terre : Je vais amener des malheurs sur ce peuple, le fruit de leurs pensées, parce qu'ils n'ont pas écouté Ma parole, et qu'ils ont rejeté Ma loi.
To what purpose do you bring me frankincense from Saba, and the sweet smelling cane from a far country? your holocausts are not acceptable, nor are your sacrifices pleasing to me.20 Pourquoi M'apportez-vous l'encens de Saba, et le roseau au suave parfum, qui vient d'un pays lointain? Vos holocaustes ne Me sont point agréables, et vos victimes ne Me plaisent pas.
Therefore thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will bring destruction upon this people, by which fathers and sons together shall fall, neighbor and kinsman shall perish.21 C'est pourquoi voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Je mettrai devant ce peuple des pierres de ruines; les pères et les fils tomberont ensemble sur elles, le voisin et l'ami périront.
Thus saith the Lord: Behold a people cometh from the land of the north, and a great nation shall rise up from the ends of the earth.22 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Un peuple vient du pays de l'aquilon, et une grande nation s'élève(ra) des extrémités de la terre.
They shall lay hold on arrow and shield: they are cruel, and will have no mercy. Their voice shall roar like the sea: and they shall mount upon horses, prepared as men for war, against thee, O daughter of Sion.23 Il saisira la flèche et le bouclier; il est cruel et impitoyable; sa voix retentira comme la mer; ils monteront sur des chevaux, prêts à combattre comme un seul homme contre toi, fille de Sion.
We have heard the fame thereof, our hands grow feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, as a woman in labor.24 Nous avons appris sa renommée (la nouvelle de son dessein), et nos mains ont perdu leur force ; l'affliction (la tribulation) nous saisit, et la douleur comme une (la) femme en travail.
Go not out into the fields, nor walk in the highway: for the sword of the enemy, and fear is on every side.25 Ne sortez pas dans les champs et n'allez pas sur les chemins, car là est le glaive de l'ennemi, et l'épouvante est en tout lieu (sont à l'entour).
Gird thee with sackcloth, O daughter of my people, and sprinkle thee with ashes: make thee mourning as for an only son, a bitter lamentation, because the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.26 Fille de mon peuple, revêts-toi d'un cilice et couvre-toi de cendre ; prends le deuil comme pour un fils unique, gémis amèrement, car le dévastateur viendra tout à coup sur nous.
I have set thee for a strong trier among my people: and thou shalt know and prove their way.27 Je t'ai établi sur Mon peuple comme un essayeur habile, tu connaîtras et tu sonderas leur voie.
All of these princes go out of the way, they walk deceitfully, they are brass and iron: they are all corrupted.28 Ce sont tous de grands rebelles, aux démarches frauduleuses (Tous ses princes ont dévié, marchant frauduleusement) ; c(e n)'est (que) de l'airain et du fer, ils sont tous corrompus.
The bellows have failed, the lead is consumed in the fire, the founder hath melted in vain: for their wicked deeds are not consumed.29 Le soufflet s'est usé, le plomb s'est consumé dans le feu; en vain le fondeur les a mis dans le four, leurs malices n'ont point été consumées.
Call them reprobate silver, for the Lord hath rejected them.30 Appelez-les argent de rebut, car le Seigneur les a rejetés.
