He that loveth his son, frequently chastiseth him, that he may rejoice in his latter end, and not grope after the doors of his neighbours.1 El que ama a su hijo lo castiga sin cesar, | para poder alegrarse en el futuro.
He that instructeth his son shall be praised in him, and shall glory in him in the midst of them of his household.2 El que corrige a su hijo tendrá muchas satisfacciones, | y entre sus conocidos se sentirá orgulloso de él.
He that teacheth his son, maketh his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends he shall glory in him.3 El que instruye a su hijo dará envidia a su enemigo, | y ante sus amigos se sentirá satisfecho.
His father is dead, and he is as if he were not dead: for he hath left one behind him that is like himself.4 Cuando el padre muere, es como si no muriese, | pues deja tras de sí un hijo semejante a él.
While he lived he saw and rejoiced in him: and when he died he was not sorrowful, neither was he confounded before his enemies.5 Durante su vida se alegra de verlo, | y a la hora de su muerte no siente tristeza.
For he left behind him a defender of his house against his enemies, and one that will requite kindness to his friends.6 Contra sus enemigos deja un vengador, | y para sus amigos un bienhechor.
For the souls of his sons he shall bind up his wounds, and at every cry his bowels shall be troubled.7 El que mima a su hijo, vendará sus heridas, | a cada grito se le conmoverán sus entrañas.
Caballo no domado sale bravo, | hijo consentido sale arisco.
dummy verses inserted by amos9 Mima a tu hijo y te dará sorpresas, | juega con él y te traerá disgustos.
Give thy son his way, and he shall make thee afraid: play with him, and he shall make thee sorrowful.10 No rías con él y no llorarás con él, | ni acabarás rechinando los dientes.
Laugh not with him, lest thou have sorrow, and at the last thy teeth be set on edge.11 En su juventud no le des libertad, | ni pases por alto sus errores.
Give him not liberty in his youth, and wink not at his devices.12 Doblega su cuello mientras es joven, | túndele las costillas cuando es pequeño, no sea que, volviéndose rebelde, te desobedezca | y sufras por él una honda amargura.
Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat his sides while he is a child, lest he grow stubborn, and regard thee not, and so be a sorrow of heart to thee.13 Educa a tu hijo y dedícate a él, | para que no tengas que soportar su insolencia.
Instruct thy son, and labour about him, lest his lewd behaviour be an offence to thee.14 Vale más pobre sano y fuerte | que rico lleno de achaques.
Better is a poor man who is sound, and strong of constitution, than a rich man who is weak and afflicted with evils.15 Salud y vigor valen más que todo el oro, | un cuerpo robusto más que una inmensa fortuna.
Health of the soul in holiness of justice, is better then all gold and silver: and a sound body, than immense revenues.16 No hay mejor riqueza que la salud del cuerpo, | ni mayor felicidad que la alegría del corazón.
There is no riches above the riches of the health of the body: and there is no pleasure above the joy of the heart.17 Mejor es la muerte que una vida amargada, | el descanso eterno que una enfermedad incurable.
Better is death than a bitter life: and everlasting rest, than continual sickness.18 Manjares derramados sobre boca cerrada | son las ofrendas depositadas sobre una tumba.
Good things that are hidden in a mouth that is shut, are as masses of meat set about a grave.19 ¿De qué le sirve al ídolo una ofrenda?
So is he that is persecuted by the Lord, bearing the reward of his iniquity:21 No te abandones a la tristeza, | ni te atormentes con tus pensamientos.
He seeth with his eyes, and groaneth, as an eunuch embracing a virgin, and sighing.22 La alegría de corazón es vida para el hombre, | y la felicidad le alarga los días.
Give not up thy soul to sadness, and afflict not thyself in thy own counsel.23 Distrae tu alma y consuela tu corazón, | aparta de ti la tristeza; | pues la tristeza ha perdido a muchos, | y no se saca ningún provecho de ella.
The joyfulness of the heart, is the life of a man, and a never failing treasure of holiness: and the joy of a man is length of life.24 Envidia y malhumor acortan los días, | las preocupaciones producen vejez prematura.
Have pity on thy own soul, pleasing God, and contain thyself: gather up thy heart in his holiness: and drive away sadness far from thee.25 Un corazón radiante tiene buen apetito | y le aprovecha todo lo que come.
For sadness hath killed many, and there is no profit in it.
Envy and anger shorten a man's days, and pensiveness will bring old age before the time.
