Douai-Rheims Tysiąclecia
Then his son Judas, called Machabeus, rose up in his stead.1 Miejsce jego zajął tymczasem jego syn, Juda, który miał przydomek Machabeusz.
And all his brethren helped him, and all they that had joined themselves to his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.2 Wsparli go wszyscy jego bracia i wszyscy, którzy przedtem przyłączyli się do jego ojca. Z radością prowadzili wojnę w obronie Izraela.
And he got his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike armour about him in battles, and protected the camp with his sword.3 On rozprzestrzenił chwałę swego ludu. Przywdział bowiem na siebie pancerz jak olbrzym, przepasał się wojennym orężem i rozpoczął wojnę, ochraniając wojsko swym mieczem.
In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey.4 W czynach swoich był podobny do lwa, do lwiątka, które ryczy rzucając się na zdobycz.
And he pursued the wicked and sought them out, and them that troubled his people he burnt with fire:5 Ścigał bezbożnych i tropił ich, a na pastwę płomieni oddał tych, którzy niepokoili jego naród.
And his enemies were driven away for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled: and salvation prospered in his hand.6 Bezbożni ze strachu przed nim byli przerażeni, i drżeli wszyscy, którzy bezbożnie postępowali, a on wybawiał i szczęście mu sprzyjało.
And he grieved many kings, and made Jacob glad with his works, and his memory is blessed for ever.7 Wielu królów rozgniewał na siebie, ale Jakub cieszył się z jego czynów i aż na wieki błogosławiona pozostanie jego pamięć.
And he went through the cities of Juda, and destroyed the wicked out of them, and turned away wrath from Israel.8 Przeszedł przez judzkie miasta i wygubił w nich ludzi bezbożnych, i odwrócił gniew Boży od Izraela.
And he was renowned even to the utmost part of the earth, and he gathered them that were perishing.9 Aż na krańcach ziemi było znane jego imię, i tych zgromadził, którzy mieli zginąć.
And Apollonius gathered together the Gentiles, and a numerous and great army from Samaria, to make war against Israel.10 Apoloniusz zebrał pogan i liczne wojsko z Samarii, ażeby walczyć przeciwko Izraelowi.
And Judas understood it, and went forth to meet him: and he overthrew him, and killed him: and many fell down slain, the rest fled away.11 Juda dowiedział się o tym, wyszedł mu naprzeciw, pobił go i zabił. Padło wielu zabitych, a reszta pouciekała.
And he took their spoils, and Judas took the sword of Apollonius, and fought with it all his lifetime.12 Oni zaś zabrali łupy na nich zdobyte, a Juda wziął sobie miecz Apoloniusza i walczył nim przez całe swoje życie.
And Seron captain of the army of Syria heard that Judas had assembled a company of the faithful, and a congregation with him,13 Seron, dowódca wojsk syryjskich, dowiedział się o tym, że Juda zebrał sobie ludzi i zgromadził prawowiernych, aby wyjść na wojnę.
And he said: I will get me a name, and will be glorified in the kingdom, and will overthrow Judas, and those that are with him, that have despised the edict of the king.14 Powiedział więc: Uczynię głośnym swoje imię i chwałę dla siebie przygotuję w królestwie; będę walczył przeciwko Judzie i przeciwko tym, co się z nim złączyli, a którzy lekceważą królewskie rozkazy.
And he made himself ready: and the host of the wicked went up with him, strong succours, to be revenged of the children of Israel.15 Tak więc wyruszył on, a z pomocą mu wyruszyło także silne wojsko bezbożnych, aby na synach Izraela wykonać zemstę.
And they approached even as far as Bethoron: and Judas went forth to meet him, with a small company.16 Gdy zbliżył się do stóp wzniesienia, na którym leży Bet-Choron, wtedy Juda z małym oddziałem wyszedł mu naprzeciw.
But when they saw the army coming to meet them, they said to Judas: How shall we, being few, be able to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, and we are ready to faint with fasting today?17 Gdy zobaczyli wojsko, które szło naprzeciw nim, powiedzieli do Judy: Nas jest tak mało, czy będziemy mogli walczyć z tym tak wielkim, potężnym mnóstwem? A przecież my dzisiaj nic jeszcze nie jedliśmy i sił nam zabrakło.
And Judas said: It is an easy matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few: and there is no difference in the sight of the God of heaven to deliver with a great multitude, or with a small company:18 Juda odparł: Bez trudu wielu może być pokonanych rękami małej liczby, bo Niebu nie czyni różnicy, czy ocali przy pomocy wielkiej czy małej liczby.
For the success of war is not in the multitude of the army, but strength cometh from heaven.19 Zwycięstwo bowiem w bitwie nie zależy od liczby wojska; prawdziwą siłą jest ta, która pochodzi z Nieba.
They come against us with an insolent multitude, and with pride, to destroy us, and our wives, and our children, and to take our spoils.20 Oni przychodzą do nas pełni pychy i bezprawia po to, aby wytępić nas razem z żonami naszymi i dziećmi i aby nas obrabować.
But we will fight for our lives and our laws:21 My zaś walczymy o swoje życie i o swoje obyczaje.
And the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: but as for you, fear them not.22 On sam skruszy ich przed naszymi oczami. Wy zaś ich nie obawiajcie się!
And as soon as he had made an end of speaking, he rushed suddenly upon them: and Seron and his host were overthrown before him:23 Gdy skończył swoje przemówienie, nagle uderzył na nich, tak że Seron i jego wojsko zostało przez nich pobite.
And he pursued him by the descent of Bethoron even to the plain, and there fell of them eight hundred men, and the rest fled into the land of the Philistines.24 Ścigali ich od przejścia Bet-Choron aż do równiny. Spośród nich padło blisko ośmiuset ludzi, a inni pouciekali do ziemi Filistynów.
And the fear of Judas and of his brethren, and the dread of them fell upon all the nations round about them.25 Wtedy zaczęto się bać Judy i jego braci, a strach przed nimi padł na okoliczne narody.
And his fame came to the king, and all nations told of the battles of Judas.26 Wieść o nim doszła aż do króla, a narody opowiadały o walkach Judy.
Now when king Antiochus heard these words, he was angry in his mind: and he sent and gathered the forces of all his kingdom, an exceeding strong army.27 Antioch, dowiedziawszy się o tych wypadkach, zawrzał gniewem. Rozesłał rozkazy i zgromadził wszystkie siły swego królestwa, armię bardzo wielką.
And he opened his treasury, and gave out pay to the army for a year: and he commanded them, that they should be ready for all things.28 Potem zaś otworzył swój skarbiec i na rok naprzód wydał żołd żołnierzom. Polecił też, żeby byli gotowi na wszystko.
And he perceived that the money of his treasures failed, and that the tributes of the country were small because of the dissension, and the evil that he had brought upon the land, that he might take away the laws of old times:29 Wtedy jednak zauważył, że w skarbcach brak pieniędzy. Rozruchy bowiem i utrapienia, jakie sprowadził na te okolice, gdzie kazał znieść obyczaje obowiązujące od najdawniejszych lat, sprawiły, że podatki były małe.
And he feared that he should not have as formerly enough, for charges and gifts, which he had given before with a liberal hand: for he had abounded more than the kings that had been before him.30 Obawiał się więc, że, jak nieraz się to już zdarzało, nie będzie miał pieniędzy na wydatki i na podarunki, które poprzednio rozdawał hojną ręką. Był bowiem bardziej rozrzutny niż inni królowie, jego poprzednicy.
And he was greatly perplexed in mind, and purposed to go into Persia, and to take tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.31 W tych wielkich swoich kłopotach postanowił, że uda się do Persji, zbierze podatki z tamtejszych krain i nagromadzi wiele pieniędzy.
And he left Lysias, a nobleman of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the kingdom, from the river Euphrates even to the river of Egypt:32 Jako wielkorządcę królewskiego od rzeki Eufrat aż do granic Egiptu zostawił Lizjasza, człowieka poważanego, pochodzącego z królewskiego rodu,
And to bring up his son Antiochus, till he came again.33 i polecił mu, żeby aż do jego powrotu wychowywał jego syna, Antiocha.
And he delivered to him half the army, and the elephants: and he gave him charge concerning all that he would have done, and concerning the inhabitants of Judea, and Jerusalem:34 Pozostawił mu także połowę swych wojsk razem ze słoniami i dał mu wskazówki co do wszystkich swoich zamiarów i co do mieszkańców Judei i Jerozolimy;
And that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away the memory of them from that place:35 żeby mianowicie wysłał przeciwko nim wojsko, starł i zniósł całkowicie siły izraelskie i to, co pozostało z Jerozolimy, żeby wymazał nawet pamięć o nich na tym miejscu,
And that he should settle strangers to dwell in all their coasts, and divide their land by lot.36 żeby obcych ludzi osiedlił na ich obszarach, a ziemię losem porozdzielał.
So the king took the half of the army that remained, and went forth from Antioch the chief city of his kingdom, in the hundred and forty-seventh year: and he passed over the river Euphrates, and went through the higher countries.37 Wtedy król zabrał drugą połowę swych wojsk, w roku sto czterdziestym siódmym wyruszył z królewskiej swej stolicy, Antiochii, przeprawił się przez rzekę Eufrat i przeszedł przez górne krainy.
Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenus, and Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king's friends.38 Lizjasz wybrał Ptolemeusza, syna Dorymenesa, Nikanora i Gorgiasza, ludzi walecznych spomiędzy królewskich przyjaciół
And he sent with them forty thousand men, and seven thousand horsemen: to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it according to the king's orders.39 i posłał z nimi czterdzieści tysięcy pieszych i siedem tysięcy konnicy, żeby poszli do ziemi judzkiej i spustoszyli ją zgodnie z królewskim rozkazem.
So they went forth with all their power, and came, and pitched near Emmaus in the plain country.40 Wyruszyli oni z całym swym wojskiem, przybyli w pobliże Emmaus i rozłożyli się obozem na równinie.
And the merchants of the countries heard the fame of them: and they took silver and gold in abundance, and servants: and they came into the camp, to buy the children of Israel for slaves: and there were joined to them the forces of Syria, and of the land of the strangers.41 Gdy kupcy tamtejszej okolicy dowiedzieli się o tym, wzięli bardzo dużo srebra i złota oraz pęta na nogi i przybyli do obozu, aby Izraelitów wziąć sobie za niewolników. Przyłączyły się do nich także oddziały z Syrii i z ziemi filistyńskiej.
And Judas and his brethren saw that evils were multiplied, and that the armies approached to their borders: and they knew the orders the king had given to destroy the people and utterly abolish them.42 Juda razem z braćmi zobaczył, że zło przebiera miarę i że wojska obozują już na ich ziemi. Dowiedzieli się też o rozkazach, które król wydał, żeby naród zniszczyć zupełnie.
And they said every man to his neighbour: Let us raise up the low condition of our people, and let us fight for our people, and our sanctuary.43 Jeden więc do drugiego mówił: Przeciwstawmy się zniszczeniu naszego narodu. Walczmy w obronie naszego narodu i świętości!
And the assembly was gathered that they might be ready for battle: and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.44 Zgromadzili się więc wszyscy, by być gotowi do walki, a także by się modlić i prosić o łaskę i zmiłowanie.
Now Jerusalem was not inhabited, but was like a desert: there was none of her children that went in or out: and the sanctuary was trodden down: and the children of strangers were in the castle, there was the habitation of the Gentiles: and joy was taken away from Jacob, and the pipe and harp ceased there.45 Jeruzalem było niezamieszkane jak jakaś pustynia; spośród jego synów nikt do niego nie wchodził ani nie wychodził, świątynię deptano. W zamku synowie cudzoziemców, a miasto jak gospoda dla pogan. Od Jakuba odeszła radość, nie słychać już fletu ni harfy.
And they assembled together, and came to Maspha over against Jerusalem: for in Maspha was a place of prayer heretofore in Israel.46 Zeszli się i udali się do Mispa, naprzeciw Jerozolimy, dlatego że niegdyś Mispa było dla Izraela miejscem modlitwy.
And they fasted that day, and put on haircloth, and put ashes upon their heads: and they rent their garments:47 Tego dnia pościli, włożyli na siebie wory, głowy posypali popiołem i porozdzierali swoje szaty.
And they laid open the books of the law, in which the Gentiles searched for the likeness of their idols:48 Potem rozwinęli księgę Prawa w tym samym celu, w jakim poganie zapytują posągi swych bóstw.
And they brought the priestly ornaments, and the firstfruits and tithes, and stirred up the Nazarites that had fulfilled their days:49 Potem przynieśli kapłańskie szaty, pierwsze plony i dziesięciny, przywołali także nazirejczyków, których liczba dni już była pełna,
And they cried with a loud voice toward heaven, saying: What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them?50 i wołali do Nieba słowami: Co mamy czynić z tymi? Gdzie ich zaprowadzić?
For thy holies are trodden down, and are profaned, and thy priests are in mourning, and are brought low.51 Świątynia Twoja została podeptana i znieważona, a kapłani Twoi trwają w żałobie i poniżeniu.
And behold the nations are come together against us to destroy us: thou knowest what they intend against us.52 A oto jeszcze poganie zebrali się przeciwko nam, aby nas zniszczyć całkowicie. Ty wiesz, jakie oni mają przeciw nam zamiary.
How shall we be able to stand before their face, unless thou, O God, help us?53 Jak będziemy mogli ostać się przed nimi, jeżeli Ty nas nie wspomożesz?
Then they sounded with trumpets, and cried out with a loud voice.54 Wtedy zaczęli grać na trąbach i podnieśli ogromny krzyk.
And after this Judas appointed captains over the people, over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.55 Potem Juda ustanowił dowódców nad ludem tysiączników, setników, pięćdziesiątników i dziesiętników.
And he said to them that were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, that they should return every man to his house, according to the law.56 Powiedział też, żeby zgodnie z Prawem wrócili do domu ci, którzy budowali dom, ożenili się właśnie, założyli winnicę lub byli bojaźliwi.
So they removed the camp, and pitched on the south side of Emmaus.57 Wtedy wojsko wyruszyło w drogę i na południe od Emmaus rozłożyło się obozem.
And Judas said: Gird yourselves, and be valiant men, and be ready against the morning, that you may fight with these nations that are assembled against us to destroy us and our sanctuary.58 Juda zaś powiedział: Przepaszcie się i bądźcie waleczni! Jutro rano bądźcie gotowi walczyć przeciwko tym poganom, którzy zeszli się przeciwko nam, żeby całkowicie zniszczyć nas i naszą świątynię.
For it is better for us to die in battle, than to see the evils of our nation, and of the holies:59 Lepiej nam przecież zginąć w bitwie, niż patrzeć na niedolę naszego narodu i świątyni.
Nevertheless as it shall be the will of God in heaven so be it done.60 Jakakolwiek zaś będzie wola w Niebie, tak niech się stanie!
