1 And Rachel, seeing herself without children, envied her sister, and said to her husband: Give me children, otherwise I shall die.	1 Viendo Raquel que no daba hijos a Jacob, tuvo celos de su hermana y dijo a Jacob: «Dame hijos o me muero».
2 And Jacob being angry with her, answered: Am I as God, who hath deprived thee of the fruit of thy womb?	2 Jacob se enfadó con Raquel y dijo: «¿Estoy yo en el lugar de Dios, que te ha negado el fruto del vientre?».
3 But she said: I have here my servant Bala: go in unto her, that she may bear upon my knees, and I may have children by her.	3 Ella dijo: «Ahí tienes a mi criada Bilá. Cohabita con ella, para que dé a luz en mis rodillas; así también tendré yo hijos por medio de ella».
4 And she gave him Bala in marriage: who,	4 Entonces le dio a su criada Bilá por mujer y Jacob cohabitó con ella.
5 When her husband had gone in unto her, conceived and bore a son.	5 Bilá concibió y dio a luz un hijo.
6 And Rachel said: The Lord hath judged for me, and hath heard my voice, giving me a son, and therefore she called his name Dan.	6 Raquel dijo: «Dios me ha hecho justicia y ha escuchado mi súplica, dándome un hijo». Por eso lo llamó Dan.
7 And again Bala conceived and bore another,	7 Concibió de nuevo Bilá, la criada de Raquel, y dio otro hijo a Jacob.
8 For whom Rachel said: God hath compared me with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called him Nephtali.	8 Raquel dijo: «Dios me ha hecho competir con mi hermana y la he vencido». Y lo llamó Neftalí.
9 Lia, perceiving that she had left off bearing, gave Zelpha her handmaid to her husband.	9 Cuando vio Lía que había dejado de tener hijos, tomó a su criada Zilpa y se la dio a Jacob por mujer.
10 And when she had conceived and brought forth a son,	10 Zilpa, la esclava de Lía, dio un hijo a Jacob.
11 She said: Happily. And therefore called his name Gad.	11 Lía exclamó: «¡Qué suerte!». Y lo llamó Gad.
12 Zelpha also bore another.	12 Zilpa, la criada de Lía, dio un segundo hijo a Jacob.
13 And Lia said: This is for my happiness: for women will call me blessed. Therefore she called him Aser.	13 Y Lía dijo: «¡Qué felicidad! Seguro que las mujeres me felicitarán». Y lo llamó Aser.
14 And Ruben, going out in the time of the wheat harvest into the field, found mandrakes: which he brought to his mother Lia. And Rachel said: Give me part of thy son's mandrakes.	14 Un día, durante la siega del trigo, Rubén salió al campo y encontró unas mandrágoras, que llevó a su madre Lía. Raquel dijo a Lía: «Dame algunas mandrágoras de tu hijo».
15 She answered: Dost thou think it a small matter, that thou hast taken my husband from me, unless thou take also my son's mandrakes? Rachel said: He shall sleep with thee this night, for thy son's mandrakes.	15 Lía contestó: «¿Te parece poco haberme quitado a mi marido, que vas a quitarme también las mandrágoras de mi hijo?». Raquel replicó: «Que se acueste contigo esta noche a cambio de las mandrágoras de tu hijo».
16 And when Jacob returned at even from the field, Lia went out to meet him, and said: Thou shalt come in unto me, because I have hired thee for my son's mandrakes. And he slept with her that night.	16 Cuando Jacob volvía del campo, por la tarde, le salió Lía al encuentro, y le dijo: «Tienes que venir conmigo, pues he pagado por ti con unas mandrágoras de mi hijo». Y él se acostó con ella aquella noche.
17 And God heard her prayers: and she conceived and bore the fifth son,	17 Dios escuchó a Lía, que concibió y dio a Jacob el quinto hijo.
18 And said: God hath given me a reward, because I gave my handmaid to my husband. And she called his name Issachar.	18 Ella dijo: «Dios me ha pagado por haber dado mi criada a mi marido». Y lo llamó Isacar.
19 And Lia conceived again, and bore the sixth son,	19 Concibió de nuevo Lía y dio a Jacob el sexto hijo.
20 And said: God hath endowed me with a good dowry: this turn also my husband will be with me, because I have borne him six sons: and therefore she called his name Zabulon.	20 Lía dijo: «Dios me ha dado una buena dádiva: esta vez mi marido me tratará como una princesa, pues le he dado seis hijos». Y lo llamó Zabulón.
21 After whom she bore a daughter, named Diana.	21 Después dio a luz una hija y la llamó Dina.
22 The Lord also remembering Rachel, heard her, and opened her womb.	22 Entonces se acordó Dios de Raquel. Dios la escuchó e hizo fecundo su seno.
23 And she conceived, and bore a son, saying: God hath taken my reproach.	23 Ella concibió, dio a luz un hijo y dijo: «Dios ha quitado mi afrenta».
24 And she called his name Joseph, saying: The Lord give me also another son.	24 Y lo llamó José, pues dijo: «¡Que el Señor me añada otro hijo!».
25 And when Joseph was born, Jacob said to his father in law: Send me away that I may return into my country, and to my land.	25 Después que Raquel dio a luz a José, dijo Jacob a Labán: «Déjame marchar a mi lugar y mi país.
26 Give me my wives, and my children, for whom I have served thee, that I may depart: thou knowest the service that I have rendered thee.	26 Dame mis mujeres, por las que te he servido, y mis hijos, y me marcharé; pues tú sabes el servicio que te he hecho».
27 Laban said to him: Let me find favour in thy sight: I have learned by experience, that God hath blessed me for thy sake.	27 Labán le respondió: «Si he alcanzado tu favor, escúchame: he adivinado que el Señor me ha bendecido por tu causa».
28 Appoint thy wages which I shall give thee.	28 Y añadió: «Dime qué paga quieres, y te la daré».
29 But he answered: Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how great thy possession hath been in my hands.	29 Le respondió: «Tú sabes lo que te he servido y cómo le ha ido a tu ganado conmigo.
30 Thou hadst but little before I came to thee, and now thou art become rich: and the Lord hath blessed thee at my coming. It is reasonable therefore that I should now provide also for my own house.	30 Lo poco que poseías antes que yo llegara ha crecido muchísimo, porque el Señor te ha bendecido por mi causa. Ahora bien, ¿cuándo voy a hacer yo también algo por mi propia casa?».
31 And Laban said: What shall I give thee? But he said: I require nothing: but if thou wilt do what I demand, I will feed, and keep thy sheep again.	31 Labán preguntó: «¿Qué te he de dar?». Jacob respondió: «No me des nada. Si estás de acuerdo con mi propuesta, yo volveré a pastorear y guardar tu rebaño.
32 Go round through all thy flocks, and separate all the sheep of divers colours, and speckled: and all that is brown and spotted, and of divers colours, as well among the sheep, as among the goats, shall be my wages.	32 Pasaré hoy entre todo tu rebaño, apartando de él toda oveja oscura y toda cabra manchada o moteada; ese será mi salario.
33 And my justice shall answer for me to morrow before thee when the time of the bargain shall come: and all that is not of divers colours, and spotted, and brown, as well among the sheep as among the goats, shall accuse me of theft.	33 Y así el día de mañana, cuando vengas a comprobar mi salario, mi honradez quedará en claro: cualquier cabra no manchada o moteada y cualquier oveja no oscura, que estén en mi poder, es que las he robado».
34 And Laban said: I like well what thou demandest.	34 Dijo Labán: «Está bien, sea como tú dices».
35 And he separated the name day the she goats, and the sheep, and the he goats, and the rams of divers colours, and spotted: and all the flock of one colour, that is, of white and black fleece, he delivered into the hands of his sons.	35 Aquel mismo día apartó Jacob los machos cabríos rayados o manchados y todas las cabras moteadas y manchadas, todo lo que tenía algo de blanco y todo lo negro entre las ovejas, y lo confió a sus hijos.
36 And he set the space of three days' journey betwixt himself and his son in law, who fed the rest of his flock.	36 Después Labán se alejó de Jacob a una distancia de tres jornadas, mientras Jacob pastoreaba el resto del rebaño de Labán.
37 And Jacob took green robs of poplar, and of almond, and of place trees, and pilled them in part: so when the bark was taken off, in the parts that were pilled, there appeared whiteness: but the parts that were whole remained green: and by this means the colour was divers.	37 Jacob tomó varas verdes de chopo, almendro y plátano, y peló en ellas unas tiras blancas, dejando al descubierto lo blanco de las varas.
38 And he put them in the troughs, where the water was poured out: that when the flocks should come to drink, they might have the rods before their eyes, and in the sight of them might conceive.	38 Luego colocó las varas peladas frente al ganado en los pilones de los abrevaderos, donde el ganado venía a beber. El ganado se apareaba cuando venía a beber.
39 And it came to pass that in the very heat of coition, the sheep beheld the rods, and brought forth spotted, and of divers colours, and speckled.	39 Así el ganado se apareó frente a las varas y parían crías rayadas, moteadas y manchadas.
40 And Jacob separated the flock, and put the rods in the troughs before the eyes of the rams: and all the white and the black were Laban's: and the rest were Jacob's, when the flocks were separated one from the other.	40 Jacob apartó los corderos y los echó a las reses rayadas y oscuras del ganado de Labán. Así mantuvo separado su ganado, sin mezclarlo con el rebaño de Labán.
41 So when the ewes went first to ram, Jacob put the rods in the roughs of water before the eyes of the rams, and of the ewes, that they might conceive while they were looking upon them:	41 Cuando las reses más fuertes se iban a aparear, Jacob colocaba las varas delante de ellas en el abrevadero, para que se apareasen frente a las varas.
42 But when the latter coming was, and the last conceiving, he did not put them. And those that were late ward, become Laban's: and they of the first time, Jacob's.	42 En cambio, cuando las reses eran débiles, no las colocaba; de este modo, las reses endebles eran las de Labán y las fuertes las de Jacob.
43 And the man was enriched exceedingly, and he had many flocks, maid servants and men servants, camels and asses.	43 Así prosperó muchísimo y llegó a tener numerosos rebaños, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos.
