1 And Rachel, seeing herself without children, envied her sister, and said to her husband: Give me children, otherwise I shall die.	1 Rachela zaś widząc, że nie może dać Jakubowi potomstwa zazdrościła swej siostrze i rzekła do męża: Spraw, abym miała dzieci; bo inaczej przyjdzie mi umrzeć!
2 And Jacob being angry with her, answered: Am I as God, who hath deprived thee of the fruit of thy womb?	2 Jakub rozgniewał się na Rachelę i odparł: Czyż to ja, a nie Bóg, odmawiam ci potomstwa?
3 But she said: I have here my servant Bala: go in unto her, that she may bear upon my knees, and I may have children by her.	3 Wtedy ona powiedziała: Mam niewolnicę Bilhę. Zbliż się do niej, aby urodziła dziecię na moich kolanach; chociaż w ten sposób będę miała od ciebie potomstwo.
4 And she gave him Bala in marriage: who,	4 Dała mu więc swą niewolnicę Bilhę za żonę, i Jakub zbliżył się do niej.
5 When her husband had gone in unto her, conceived and bore a son.	5 A gdy Bilha poczęła i urodziła Jakubowi syna,
6 And Rachel said: The Lord hath judged for me, and hath heard my voice, giving me a son, and therefore she called his name Dan.	6 Rachela rzekła: Bóg jako sędzia otoczył mnie opieką; wysłuchawszy mnie dał mi syna. Dlatego nazwała go Dan.
7 And again Bala conceived and bore another,	7 Niewolnica Racheli, Bilha, znowu poczęła i urodziła Jakubowi drugiego syna.
8 For whom Rachel said: God hath compared me with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called him Nephtali.	8 Wtedy Rachela rzekła: Nadludzką walkę wiodłam z siostrą moją i zwyciężyłam. Przeto dała mu imię Neftali.
9 Lia, perceiving that she had left off bearing, gave Zelpha her handmaid to her husband.	9 Ale i Lea widząc, że przestała rodzić, wzięła swą niewolnicę Zilpę i dała ją Jakubowi za żonę.
10 And when she had conceived and brought forth a son,	10 Zilpa, niewolnica Lei, urodziła Jakubowi syna.
11 She said: Happily. And therefore called his name Gad.	11 Wtedy Lea zawołała: Szczęśliwie! - i dała mu imię Gad.
12 Zelpha also bore another.	12 A gdy Zilpa, niewolnica Lei, urodziła Jakubowi drugiego syna,
13 And Lia said: This is for my happiness: for women will call me blessed. Therefore she called him Aser.	13 Lea powiedziała: Na moje szczęście! Bo kobiety będą mnie zwały szczęśliwą. Dała więc mu imię Aser.
14 And Ruben, going out in the time of the wheat harvest into the field, found mandrakes: which he brought to his mother Lia. And Rachel said: Give me part of thy son's mandrakes.	14 Pewnego razu Ruben, wyszedłszy na pole, gdy żęto pszenicę, znalazł mandragory i przyniósł je swej matce, Lei. Wtedy Rachela rzekła: Daj mi mandragory syna twego.
15 She answered: Dost thou think it a small matter, that thou hast taken my husband from me, unless thou take also my son's mandrakes? Rachel said: He shall sleep with thee this night, for thy son's mandrakes.	15 A na to Lea: Czyż nie dość, że mi zabrałaś mego męża, i jeszcze chcesz zabrać mandragory mego syna? Rachela zawołała: Niechaj więc śpi z tobą tej nocy za mandragory twego syna!
16 And when Jacob returned at even from the field, Lia went out to meet him, and said: Thou shalt come in unto me, because I have hired thee for my son's mandrakes. And he slept with her that night.	16 A gdy Jakub wracał wieczorem z pola, wyszła Lea naprzeciw niego i rzekła: Do mnie przyjdź, bo nabyłam cię za mandragory mego syna. I spał z nią owej nocy.
17 And God heard her prayers: and she conceived and bore the fifth son,	17 Bóg zaś spełnił pragnienie Lei: poczęła i urodziła Jakubowi piątego syna.
18 And said: God hath given me a reward, because I gave my handmaid to my husband. And she called his name Issachar.	18 I mówiła: Dał mi Bóg nagrodę za to, że oddałam moją niewolnicę mężowi. Nazwała więc go Issachar.
19 And Lia conceived again, and bore the sixth son,	19 A gdy Lea znów poczęła i urodziła szóstego syna Jakubowi,
20 And said: God hath endowed me with a good dowry: this turn also my husband will be with me, because I have borne him six sons: and therefore she called his name Zabulon.	20 rzekła: Obdarował mnie Bóg wspaniałym darem, teraz będę już miała pierwszeństwo u mego męża, gdyż urodziłam mu sześciu synów! Dała więc synowi imię Zabulon.
21 After whom she bore a daughter, named Diana.	21 Wreszcie urodziła i córkę, którą nazwała Dina.
22 The Lord also remembering Rachel, heard her, and opened her womb.	22 A Bóg zlitował się i nad Rachelą; wysłuchał ją Bóg i otworzył jej łono.
23 And she conceived, and bore a son, saying: God hath taken my reproach.	23 Gdy więc poczęła i urodziła syna, rzekła: Zdjął Bóg ze mnie hańbę!
24 And she called his name Joseph, saying: The Lord give me also another son.	24 Dając mu zaś imię Józef, westchnęła: Oby Pan dodał mi jeszcze drugiego syna!
25 And when Joseph was born, Jacob said to his father in law: Send me away that I may return into my country, and to my land.	25 Gdy Rachela urodziła Józefa, Jakub rzekł do Labana: Zwolnij mnie, abym mógł wrócić do kraju, w którym mieszkałem.
26 Give me my wives, and my children, for whom I have served thee, that I may depart: thou knowest the service that I have rendered thee.	26 Pozwól mi zabrać moje żony i dzieci, za które ci służyłem, i odejdę. Wiesz dobrze, jak ci służyłem.
27 Laban said to him: Let me find favour in thy sight: I have learned by experience, that God hath blessed me for thy sake.	27 Laban mu odpowiedział: Obyś mnie darzył życzliwością! Odgadłem bowiem, że Pan błogosławi mi dzięki tobie.
28 Appoint thy wages which I shall give thee.	28 Po czym dodał: Ustal mi twoją zapłatę, a ja ci ją dam.
29 But he answered: Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how great thy possession hath been in my hands.	29 Jakub rzekł do niego: Ty sam wiesz, jak ci służyłem i jaki jest twój dobytek dzięki mnie.
30 Thou hadst but little before I came to thee, and now thou art become rich: and the Lord hath blessed thee at my coming. It is reasonable therefore that I should now provide also for my own house.	30 Miałeś bowiem niewiele, zanim przyszedłem; odkąd zaś tu jestem, pomnożył się on bardzo i Pan ci błogosławi. Jednak teraz muszę się zatroszczyć i o moją rodzinę.
31 And Laban said: What shall I give thee? But he said: I require nothing: but if thou wilt do what I demand, I will feed, and keep thy sheep again.	31 A na to Laban: Cóż więc mam ci dać? Jakub odpowiedział: Nic mi nie dasz! Uczyń mi tylko to, co ci powiem, a będę nadal pasł twe stada i będę się nimi opiekował.
32 Go round through all thy flocks, and separate all the sheep of divers colours, and speckled: and all that is brown and spotted, and of divers colours, as well among the sheep, as among the goats, shall be my wages.	32 A więc: obejdę dzisiaj wszystkie twe stada i wybiorę z nich dla siebie wszystkie jagnięta cętkowane, pstre i czarne spośród owiec oraz koźlęta pstre i cętkowane spośród kóz. Niech one będą moją zapłatą.
33 And my justice shall answer for me to morrow before thee when the time of the bargain shall come: and all that is not of divers colours, and spotted, and brown, as well among the sheep as among the goats, shall accuse me of theft.	33 Po pewnym czasie będziesz mógł przekonać się o mojej uczciwości. Gdy bowiem przyjdziesz, aby obejrzeć to, co będzie mi się należało jako zapłata, kozy, które nie będą cętkowane i pstre, oraz owce, które nie będą czarne, możesz uważać za skradzione przez mnie.
34 And Laban said: I like well what thou demandest.	34 Laban rzekł: Dobrze, niechaj będzie tak, jak mówisz!
35 And he separated the name day the she goats, and the sheep, and the he goats, and the rams of divers colours, and spotted: and all the flock of one colour, that is, of white and black fleece, he delivered into the hands of his sons.	35 Ale jeszcze tego samego dnia Laban oddzielił wszystkie kozły cętkowane i pstre oraz wszystkie kozy cętkowane i pstre; wszystkie, które miały cośkolwiek sierści białej, oraz owce czarne, i dał je swym synom.

37 And Jacob took green robs of poplar, and of almond, and of place trees, and pilled them in part: so when the bark was taken off, in the parts that were pilled, there appeared whiteness: but the parts that were whole remained green: and by this means the colour was divers.	37 Jakub nazbierał sobie świeżych gałązek topoli, drzewa migdałowego i platanu i pozdzierał z nich korę w taki sposób, że ukazały się na nich białe prążki.
38 And he put them in the troughs, where the water was poured out: that when the flocks should come to drink, they might have the rods before their eyes, and in the sight of them might conceive.	38 Tak ostrugane patyki umocował przy korytach z wodą, czyli przy poidłach, aby je widziały trzody, które przychodziły pić wodę. Gdy bowiem zwierzęta przychodziły pić wodę, parzyły się.
39 And it came to pass that in the very heat of coition, the sheep beheld the rods, and brought forth spotted, and of divers colours, and speckled.	39 I tak parzyły się zwierzęta z trzód przed tymi patykami i wskutek tego dawały przychówek o sierści prążkowej, pstrej i cętkowanej.
40 And Jacob separated the flock, and put the rods in the troughs before the eyes of the rams: and all the white and the black were Laban's: and the rest were Jacob's, when the flocks were separated one from the other.	40 Jakub oddzielił więc owce białe i pędził je przodem przed pstrymi i czarnymi, jako stada Labana; dla siebie zaś trzymał stada osobno, nie łącząc ich ze stadami Labana.
41 So when the ewes went first to ram, Jacob put the rods in the roughs of water before the eyes of the rams, and of the ewes, that they might conceive while they were looking upon them:	41 A przy tym Jakub umieszczał owe ponacinane patyki na widocznym miejscu przy poidłach tylko wtedy, gdy miały się parzyć sztuki mocne;
42 But when the latter coming was, and the last conceiving, he did not put them. And those that were late ward, become Laban's: and they of the first time, Jacob's.	42 gdy zaś owce były słabe, patyków nie kładł. W ten sposób sztuki słabe miały się dostać Labanowi, a mocne - Jakubowi.
43 And the man was enriched exceedingly, and he had many flocks, maid servants and men servants, camels and asses.	43 Tak to stał się Jakub człowiekiem bardzo zamożnym; miał bowiem liczne trzody, a ponadto niewolnice, sługi, wielbłądy i osły.
