EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Había un hombre enfermo, Lázaro de Betania, del pueblo de María y de su hermana Marta.	1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .
2 María era la misma que derramó perfume sobre el Señor y le secó los pies con sus cabellos. Su hermano Lázaro era el que estaba enfermo.	2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.
3 Las hermanas enviaron a decir a Jesús: «Señor, el que tú amas, está enfermo».	3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'
4 Al oír esto, Jesús dijo: «Esta enfermedad no es mortal; es para gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella».	4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'
5 Jesús quería mucho a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.	5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,
6 Sin embargo, cuando oyó que este se encontraba enfermo, se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba.	6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days
7 Después dijo a sus discípulos: «Volvamos a Judea».	7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'
8 Los discípulos le dijeron: «Maestro, hace poco los judíos querían apedrearte, ¿quieres volver allá?».	8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'
9 Jesús les respondió: «¿Acaso no son doce la horas del día? El que camina de día no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo;	9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;
10 en cambio, el que camina de noche tropieza, porque la luz no está en él».	10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.
11 Después agregó: «Nuestro amigo Lázaro duerme, pero yo voy a despertarlo».	11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'
12 Sus discípulos le dijeron: «Señor, si duerme, se curará».	12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'
13 Ellos pensaban que hablaba del sueño, pero Jesús se refería a la muerte.	13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';
14 Entonces les dijo abiertamente: «Lázaro ha muerto,	14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;
15 y me alegro por ustedes de no haber estado allí, a fin de que crean. Vayamos a verlo».	15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'
16 Tomás, llamado el Mellizo, dijo a los otros discípulos: «Vayamos también nosotros a morir con él».	16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'
17 Cuando Jesús llegó, se encontró con que Lázaro estaba sepultado desde hacía cuatro Días.	17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.
18 Betania distaba de Jerusalén sólo unos tres kilómetros.	18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,
19 Muchos judíos habían ido a consolar a Marta y a María, por la muerte de su hermano.	19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 Al enterarse de que Jesús llegaba, Marta salió a su encuentro, mientras María permanecía en la casa.	20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.
21 Marta dio a Jesús: «Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.	21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,
22 Pero yo sé que aun ahora, Dios te concederá todo lo que le pidas».	22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'
23 Jesús le dijo: «Tu hermano resucitará».	23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'
24 Marta le respondió: «Sé que resucitará en la resurrección del último día».	24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'
25 Jesús le dijo: «Yo soy la Resurrección y la Vida. El que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá:	25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,
26 y todo el que vive y cree en mí, no morirá jamás. ¿Crees esto?».	26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?
27 Ella le respondió: «Sí, Señor, creo que tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, el que debía venir al mundo».	27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'
28 Después fue a llamar a María, su hermana, y le dijo en voz baja: «El Maestro está aquí y te llama».	28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'
29 Al oír esto, ella se levantó rápidamente y fue a su encuentro.	29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.
30 Jesús no había llegado todavía al pueblo, sino que estaba en el mismo sitio donde Marta lo había encontrado.	30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.
31 Los Judíos que estaban en la casa consolando a María, al ver que esta se levantaba de repente y salía, la siguieron, pensando que iba al sepulcro para llorar allí.	31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 María llegó adonde estaba Jesús y, al verlo, se postró a sus pies y le dijo: «Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto».	32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'
33 Jesús, al verla llorar a ella, y también a los judíos que la acompañaban, conmovido y turbado,	33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,
34 preguntó: «¿Dónde lo pusieron?». Le respondieron: «Ven, Señor, y lo verás».	34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'
35 Y Jesús lloró.	35 Jesus wept;
36 Los judíos dijeron: «¡Cómo lo amaba!».	36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'
37 Pero algunos decían: «Este que abrió los ojos del ciego de nacimiento, ¿no podría impedir que Lázaro muriera?».	37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'
38 Jesús, conmoviéndose nuevamente, llegó al sepulcro, que era una cueva con una piedra encima,	38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.
39 y le dijo: «Quiten la piedra». Marta, la hermana del difunto, le respondió: «Señor, huele mal; ya hace cuatro días que está muerto».	39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'
40 Jesús le dijo: «¿No te he dicho que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios?».	40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'
41 Entonces quitaron la piedra, y Jesús, levantando los ojos al cielo, dijo: «Padre, te doy gracias porque me oíste.	41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.
42 Yo sé que siempre me oyes, pero le he dicho por esta gente que me rodea, para que crean que tú me has enviado».	42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.
43 Después de decir esto, gritó con voz fuerte: «¡Lázaro, ven afuera!».	43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'
44 El muerto salió con los pies y las manos atados con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: «Desátenlo para que pueda caminar».	44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'
45 Al ver lo que hizo Jesús, muchos de los judíos que habían ido a casa de María creyeron en él.	45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,
46 Pero otros fueron a ver a los fariseos y les contaron lo que Jesús había hecho.	46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.
47 Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron un Consejo y dijeron: «¿Qué hacemos? Porque este hombre realiza muchos signos.	47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?
48 Si lo dejamos seguir así, todos creerán en él, y los romanos vendrán y destruirán nuestro Lugar santo y nuestra nación».	48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'
49 Uno de ellos, llamado Caifás, que era Sumo Sacerdote ese año, les dijo: «Ustedes no comprenden nada.	49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;
50 ¿No les parece preferible que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo y no que perezca la nación entera?».	50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'
51 No dijo eso por sí mismo, sino que profetizó como Sumo Sacerdote que Jesús iba a morir por la nación,	51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-
52 y no solamente por la nación, sino también para congregar en la unidad a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.	52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.
53 A partir de ese día, resolvieron que debían matar a Jesús.	53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.
54 Por eso él no se mostraba más en público entre los judíos, sino que fue a una región próxima al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraím, y allí permaneció con sus discípulos.	54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.
55 Como se acercaba la Pascua de los judíos, mucha gente de la región había subido a Jerusalén para purificarse.	55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves
56 Buscaban a Jesús y se decían unos a otros en el Templo: «¿Qué les parece, vendrá a la fiesta o no?».	56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'
57 Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden de que si alguno conocía el lugar donde él se encontraba, lo hiciera saber para detenerlo.	57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.
