1 Après cela, Jésus alla sur les bords de la mer de Galilée, du côté de Tibériade.	1 After these things, Jesus traveled across the sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.
2 Une foule nombreuse le suivait, car elle voyait les signes miraculeux qu’il opérait sur les malades.	2 And a great multitude was following him, for they saw the signs that he was accomplishing toward those who were infirm.
3 Jésus monta sur la colline, et là il s’assit avec ses disciples.	3 Therefore, Jesus went onto a mountain, and he sat down there with his disciples.
4 La Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche.	4 Now the Passover, the feast day of the Jews, was near.
5 Jésus, donc, leva les yeux et vit cette grande foule qui montait vers lui. Alors il dit à Philippe: "Où allons-nous acheter des pains pour qu’ils aient à manger?”	5 And so, when Jesus had lifted up his eyes and had seen that a very great multitude came to him, he said to Philip, “From where should we buy bread, so that these may eat?”
6 Jésus disait cela pour voir comment Philippe allait réagir, car lui savait ce qu’il allait faire.	6 But he said this to test him. For he himself knew what he would do.
7 Philippe lui répond: "Même avec 200 pièces d’argent, le pain ne suffirait pas pour que chacun en ait un morceau.”	7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii of bread would not be sufficient for each of them to receive even a little.”
8 Un des disciples de Jésus, André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, dit alors:	8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him:
9 "Il y a là un garçon avec cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons: nous voilà bien pour nourrir toute cette foule!”	9 “There is a certain boy here, who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are these among so many?”
10 Mais Jésus dit: "Faites asseoir tout ce monde.” Il y avait beaucoup d’herbe à cet endroit et les hommes s’assirent; ils étaient environ 5 000.	10 Then Jesus said, “Have the men sit down to eat.” Now, there was much grass in that place. And so the men, in number about five thousand, sat down to eat.
11 Jésus donc prend les pains et rend grâce, puis il en donne à ce monde qui s’est mis à l’aise, et il leur donne de même du poisson, autant qu’ils en veulent.	11 Therefore, Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting down to eat; similarly also, from the fish, as much as they wanted.
12 Quand ils ont tous mangé à leur faim, Jésus dit à ses disciples: "Ramassez les morceaux qui restent, il ne faut rien perdre.”	12 Then, when they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be lost.”
13 On les ramasse donc et on remplit douze corbeilles avec les débris des cinq pains d’orge, tout ce qu’on n’avait pas mangé.	13 And so they gathered, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which were left over from those who had eaten.
14 À la vue du signe que Jésus venait de faire, les gens commencèrent à dire: "Cet homme est vraiment le prophète qui doit venir dans le monde!”	14 Therefore, those men, when they had seen that Jesus had accomplished a sign, they said, “Truly, this one is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
15 Jésus comprit qu’ils allaient l’enlever pour le proclamer roi; alors, une fois de plus, il les laissa et s’en alla tout seul dans la montagne.	15 And so, when he realized that they were going to come and take him away and make him king, Jesus fled back to the mountain, by himself alone.
16 En fin de journée les disciples descendirent vers le rivage.	16 Then, when evening arrived, his disciples descended to the sea.
17 Il faisait déjà nuit et Jésus n’était toujours pas là avec eux. Ils montèrent donc dans une barque, cherchant à traverser la mer en direction de Capharnaüm,	17 And when they had climbed into a boat, they went across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had now arrived, and Jesus had not returned to them.
18 mais la mer était déchaînée car le vent soufflait très fort.	18 Then the sea was stirred up by a great wind that was blowing.
19 Quand ils avaient déjà ramé quatre ou cinq kilomètres, ils virent Jésus qui s’approchait de la barque: il marchait sur la mer et les disciples eurent vraiment peur.	19 And so, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid.
20 Mais lui leur dit: "C’est moi, ne craignez pas.”	20 But he said to them: “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
21 Et comme ils voulaient le prendre dans la barque, au même moment la barque toucha terre à l’endroit vers lequel ils se dirigeaient.	21 Therefore, they were willing to receive him into the boat. But immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
22 Le lendemain, la foule qui était restée de l’autre côté de la mer se rendit compte qu’il n’y avait pas eu d’autre barque que celle-là et que Jésus n’y était pas monté avec ses disciples: ils étaient partis seuls.	22 On the next day, the crowd which was standing across the sea saw that there were no other small boats in that place, except one, and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had departed alone.
23 Cependant des bateaux étaient arrivés de Tibériade près de l’endroit où l’on avait mangé le pain lorsque le Seigneur rendit grâces.	23 Yet truly, other boats came over from Tiberias, next to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks.
24 Lorsque tous ces gens virent que Jésus n’était pas là, et ses disciples non plus, ils montèrent sur ces bateaux à la recherche de Jésus, et ils vinrent à Capharnaüm.	24 Therefore, when the crowd had seen that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they climbed into the small boats, and they went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25 À peine l’eurent-ils trouvé sur l’autre bord du lac qu’ils lui dirent: "Rabbi, Maître, comment es-tu venu?”	25 And when they had found him across the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
26 Alors Jésus leur répond: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu à travers les signes, mais parce que vous avez eu du pain et que vous avez bien mangé.	26 Jesus answered them and said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen signs, but because you have eaten from the bread and were satisfied.
27 Travaillez, non pas pour la nourriture qui disparaît, mais pour la nourriture qui demeure et qui devient vie éternelle. C’est le Fils de l’Homme qui vous la donnera; c’est lui que Dieu le Père a marqué de son sceau.”	27 Do not work for food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”
28 Alors on lui dit: "Pour travailler aux œuvres de Dieu, que devons-nous faire?”	28 Therefore, they said to him, “What should we do, so that we may labor in the works of God?”
29 Et Jésus leur répond: "L’œuvre de Dieu, c’est que vous ayez foi en celui qu’il a envoyé.”	29 Jesus responded and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.”
30 Ils lui disent: "Que fais-tu, quel signe avons-nous vu pour que nous croyions en toi? Qu’es-tu capable de faire?	30 And so they said to him: “Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it and believe in you? What will you work?
31 Nos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, comme dit l’Écriture: Il leur a donné à manger le pain venu du ciel”.	31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert, just as it has been written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Jésus leur répond: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: ce n’est pas Moïse qui vous a donné le pain venu du ciel; c’est mon Père qui vous donne le vrai pain descendu du ciel.	32 Therefore, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
33 Celui qui descend du ciel et donne la vie au monde, c’est lui le pain de Dieu.”	33 For the bread of God is he who descends from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 Alors les gens lui disent: "Seigneur, donnez-nous donc ce pain.”	34 And so they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
35 Et Jésus leur répond: "Je suis le pain de vie: celui qui vient à moi n’aura jamais faim, celui qui croit en moi n’aura plus jamais soif.	35 Then Jesus said to them: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
36 Mais vous avez vu et vous n’avez pas cru: cela, je vous l’ai déjà dit.	36 But I say to you, that even though you have seen me, you do not believe.
37 “Tout ce que le Père me donne viendra à moi, et je ne rejetterai pas celui qui vient à moi.	37 All that the Father gives to me shall come to me. And whoever comes to me, I will not cast out.
38 Car je suis descendu du ciel, non pour faire ma volonté, mais pour faire la volonté de celui qui m’envoie.	38 For I descended from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
39 Voici ce que veut celui qui m’a envoyé: que je ne perde rien de ce qu’il m’a donné, mais que je le ressuscite au dernier jour.	39 Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day.
40 Oui, c’est la volonté de mon Père: quiconque voit le Fils et croit en lui doit vivre de vie éternelle, et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.”	40 So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
41 Les Juifs commencèrent à protester parce que Jésus avait dit: "Je suis le pain qui est descendu du ciel.”	41 Therefore, the Jews murmured about him, because he had said: “I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.”
42 Ils disaient: "Nous connaissons son père et sa mère, n’est-ce pas? Il n’est que Jésus fils de Joseph. Et maintenant il vient nous dire qu’il est descendu du ciel!”	42 And they said: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Then how can he say: ‘For I descended from heaven?’ ”
43 Jésus leur dit ceci: "Ne protestez pas entre vous.	43 And so Jesus responded and said to them: “Do not choose to murmur among yourselves.
44 Personne ne peut venir à moi si le Père qui m’a envoyé ne l’attire; moi, alors, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.	44 No one is able to come to me, unless the Father, who has sent me, has drawn him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
45 Il est écrit dans les livres des prophètes: Tous seront enseignés par Dieu. C’est ainsi que vient à moi celui qui a entendu et s’est laissé instruire par le Père.	45 It has been written in the Prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to me.
46 Car personne, bien sûr, n’a vu le Père; un seul a vu le Père, celui qui vient d’auprès de Dieu.	46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God; this one has seen the Father.
47 “En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: celui qui croit vit de vie éternelle.”	47 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me has eternal life.
48 “Je suis le pain de vie.	48 I am the bread of life.
49 Vos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, mais ils sont morts.	49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died.
50 Voici maintenant le pain qui est descendu du ciel, celui qui en mange ne meurt pas.	50 This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from it, he may not die.
51 Je suis le pain vivant qui est descendu du ciel; si quelqu’un mange de ce pain, il vivra pour toujours. Et ce pain que je donnerai, c’est ma chair livrée pour la vie du monde.”	51 I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.
52 Les Juifs commencèrent à se diviser. Ils disaient: "Cet homme va-t-il nous donner à manger de la chair?”	52 If anyone eats from this bread, he shall live in eternity. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.”
53 Jésus leur dit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis: si vous ne mangez pas la chair du Fils de l’Homme et si vous ne buvez pas son sang, vous n’avez pas la vie en vous.	53 Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
54 Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang vit de vie éternelle, et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.	54 And so, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.
55 “Ma chair est vraiment nourriture, et mon sang est vraiment une boisson.	55 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
56 Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi et moi en lui.	56 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
57 De même que je vis par le Père, car le Père qui m’a envoyé est vivant, de la même façon celui qui me mange vivra par moi.	57 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
58 Voici le pain qui est descendu du ciel. Ce ne sera pas comme pour vos pères qui ont mangé, et ensuite ils sont morts: celui qui mange ce pain vivra pour toujours.”	58 Just as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father, so also whoever eats me, the same shall live because of me.
59 Voilà ce que Jésus a dit dans la synagogue, quand il enseignait à Capharnaüm.	59 This is the bread that descends from heaven. It is not like the manna that your fathers ate, for they died. Whoever eats this bread shall live forever.”
60 Après l’avoir entendu, bon nombre de ses disciples dirent: "Ce langage est dur à accepter, qui voudra l’écouter?”	60 He said these things when he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.
61 Jésus savait en lui-même que ses disciples protestaient; il leur dit: "Tout cela vous scandalise?	61 Therefore, many of his disciples, upon hearing this, said: “This saying is difficult,” and, “Who is able to listen to it?”
62 Que direz-vous lorsque vous verrez le Fils de l’Homme remonter où il était auparavant?	62 But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: “Does this offend you?
63 C’est l’Esprit qui fait vivre, la chair ne sert de rien; les paroles que je vous ai dites sont esprit, et elles sont vie.	63 Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending to where he was before?
64 Mais certains d’entre vous ne croient pas.” Jésus savait en effet dès le début quels étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas, et qui allait le trahir.	64 It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh does not offer anything of benefit. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
65 Et il ajouta: "Voici la raison pour laquelle je vous ai dit que personne ne peut venir à moi si cela ne lui a pas été donné par le Père.”	65 But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were unbelieving and which one would betray him.
66 Ce jour-là beaucoup de disciples firent marche arrière et cessèrent de le suivre.	66 And so he said, “For this reason, I said to you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been given to him by my Father.”
67 Jésus dit alors aux Douze: "N’allez-vous pas partir, vous aussi?”	67 After this, many of his disciples went back, and they no longer walked with him.
68 Pierre lui répondit: "Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle,	68 Therefore, Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
69 et nous, nous croyons et nous savons que tu es le Saint de Dieu.”	69 Then Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
70 Jésus leur dit: "N’est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous, les Douze? et pourtant l’un de vous est un démon.”	70 And we have believed, and we recognize that you are the Christ, the Son of God.”
71 Jésus parlait de Judas, fils de Simon Iscariote. C’est lui, l’un des Douze, qui allait livrer Jésus.	71 Jesus answered them: “Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one among you is a devil.”
	72 Now he was speaking about Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. For this one, even though he was one of the twelve, was about to betray him.
