1 Alors Joseph donna cet ordre à son intendant: “Remplis de nourriture les sacs de ces hommes, autant qu’ils peuvent en emporter, et remets l’argent de chacun à l’entrée de son sac.	1 Then Joseph instructed the steward of his house, saying: “Fill their sacks with grain, as much as they are able to hold. And place each one’s money at the top of the sack.
2 Puis tu mettras ma coupe, la coupe d’argent, à l’entrée du sac du plus jeune, avec l’argent de son blé.” L’intendant fit donc ce que Joseph avait commandé.	2 But place my silver bowl, and the price that he gave for the wheat, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest.” And so it was done.
3 Au lever du jour, on renvoya ces hommes avec leurs ânes.	3 And when morning arose, they were sent away with their donkeys.
4 Ils venaient tout juste de sortir de la ville, ils n’étaient donc pas très loin, lorsque Joseph dit à son intendant: “Lance-toi à la poursuite de ces hommes et, lorsque tu les auras rejoints, tu leur diras: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?	4 And now they had departed from the city and had set out a short distance. Then Joseph, sending for the steward of his house, said: “Rise up and pursue the men. And when you have overtaken them, say: ‘Why have you returned evil for good?
5 Pourquoi avez-vous volé la coupe en argent de mon maître? N’est-ce pas celle dans laquelle il boit et avec laquelle il pratique la divination? Ce que vous avez fait là va vous porter malheur.”	5 The cup that you have stolen, it is that from which my lord drinks, and in which he is accustomed to discern signs. You have done a very sinful thing.’ ”
6 L’intendant courut donc les rejoindre et leur répéta les paroles de Joseph.	6 He did as he had been ordered. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them according to the order.
7 Ils lui répondirent: “Pourquoi mon seigneur nous parle-t-il de cette façon? Nous n’avons pas l’habitude d’agir ainsi!	7 And they responded: “Why does our lord speak in this way, as though your servants had committed such a shameful act?
8 L’argent que nous avions trouvé sur le dessus de nos sacs, nous l’avons rapporté du pays de Canaan. Comment donc aurions-nous volé de l’argent ou de l’or dans la maison de ton maître?	8 The money, which we found at the top of our sacks, we carried back to you from the land of Canaan. So in what way does it follow that we would steal, from the house of your lord, gold or silver?
9 Si tu trouves cette coupe sur l’un de tes serviteurs, qu’il soit mis à mort, et que nous devenions les esclaves de mon seigneur.”	9 Whichever of your servants will be found to have what you seek, may he die, and we shall be the servants of my lord.”
10 Il leur dit: “Soit! je vais vous juger sur vos paroles. Celui chez qui l’on trouvera la coupe sera mon esclave, et vous, vous serez libres.”	10 And he said to them: “Let it be according to your verdict. With whomever it will be found, let him be my servant, but you will be unharmed.”
11 Sans perdre de temps, chacun déposa à terre son sac de blé et l’ouvrit.	11 And so, they quickly placed their sacks down to the ground, and each one was opened.
12 La fouille commença par l’aîné, et finit par le plus jeune: on trouva la coupe dans le sac de Benjamin.	12 And when he had searched, beginning with the oldest, all the way to the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin’s sack.
13 Tous alors déchirèrent leurs vêtements et, après avoir chargé leurs sacs sur leurs ânes, ils retournèrent vers la ville.	13 But they, tearing their garments and burdening their donkeys again, returned to the town.
14 Juda et ses frères rentrèrent dans la maison de Joseph; il était là et ils se prosternèrent à terre devant lui.	14 And Judah, first among his brothers, entered to Joseph (for he had not yet departed from the place) and together they all fell down before him to the ground.
15 Joseph leur dit: “Qu’avez-vous fait? Ne savez-vous pas qu’un homme comme moi est capable de tout deviner?”	15 And he said to them: “Why would you choose to act in this way? Could you be ignorant that there is no one like me in the knowledge of discerning signs?”
16 Alors Juda lui dit: “Nous n’avons rien à répondre à mon seigneur. Comment pourrions-nous nous justifier? Dieu a dévoilé la faute de tes serviteurs; nous serons donc les esclaves de mon seigneur, nous et celui dans la main duquel on a trouvé la coupe.”	16 And Judah said to him, “What could we answer to my lord? And what would we be able to say, or to justly claim? God has discovered the iniquity of your servants. See, we have all become servants to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found.”
17 Mais il leur dit: “Dieu me garde de faire cela! Celui sur qui on a trouvé ma coupe sera mon esclave, mais vous, retournez en paix vers votre père!”	17 Joseph responded: “Far be it from me that I should act in this way. He who stole the cup, he will be my servant. But you may go away free to your father.”
18 Juda s’avança alors vers lui, et dit: “Je t’en supplie mon seigneur, permets-moi seulement de te dire un mot. Ne te mets pas en colère contre ton serviteur, bien que tu sois comme le Pharaon.	18 Then Judah, approaching closer, said confidently: “I beg you, my lord, let your servant speak a word in your ears, and do not be angry with your servant. For you are next to Pharaoh.
19 Mon seigneur, tu nous as interrogés; tu nous as demandé: ‘Avez-vous un père ou un frère?’	19 My lord, you questioned your servants before: ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
20 Nous te l’avons dit, à toi mon seigneur: Nous avons un père qui est vieux. Dans sa vieillesse, il a eu un garçon qui reste seul de sa mère, car son frère est mort. Et cet enfant, son père l’aime.	20 And we answered you, my lord: ‘There is our father, an old man, and a young boy, who was born in his old age. His brother of the same womb has died, and he alone is left to his mother and father, who truly love him tenderly.’
21 Tu as ajouté en nous parlant: ‘Amenez-le moi pour que je le voie!’	21 And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him to me, and I will set my eyes on him.’
22 Nous t’avons répondu, à toi mon seigneur: ‘Le garçon ne peut pas quitter son père, s’il manquait à son père, celui-ci en mourrait.’	22 We suggested to my lord: ‘The boy is not able to leave his father. For if he sends him away, he will die.’
23 “Alors tu nous as dit: ‘Si votre plus jeune frère ne vient pas avec vous, inutile de chercher à me voir.’	23 And you said to your servants: ‘Unless your youngest brother arrives with you, you will not see my face any more.’
24 Aussi, lorsque nous sommes remontés vers notre père, nous lui avons rapporté tes paroles, mon seigneur.	24 Therefore, when we had gone up to your servant our father, we explained to him all that my lord had spoken.
25 Et plus tard, quand notre père nous a dit de retourner pour acheter un peu de nourriture,	25 And our father said: ‘Return and buy us a little wheat.’
26 nous lui avons répété: ‘Nous ne pouvons pas y aller si notre plus jeune frère ne vient pas avec nous. Nous ne partirons pas, car nous ne pourrons revoir cet homme que si notre plus jeune frère est avec nous.’	26 And we said to him: ‘We cannot go. If our youngest brother descends with us, we will set out together. Otherwise, in his absence, we do not dare to see the face of the man.’
27 Alors mon père nous a dit: ‘Vous savez que ma femme Rachel m’a donné deux garçons.	27 To which he responded: ‘You know that my wife conceived twice by me.
28 Le premier a disparu et j’ai dit: Il a sûrement été dévoré. Je ne l’ai jamais revu jusqu’à ce jour.	28 One went out, and you said, “A beast devoured him.” And since then, he has not appeared.
29 Si vous m’enlevez encore celui-là et qu’il lui arrive malheur, vous aurez fait descendre mes cheveux blancs dans la tristesse au séjour des morts.’	29 If you take this one also, and anything happens to him on the way, you will lead my grey hairs down with grief to the grave.’
30 “Ainsi, de la vie du garçon dépend celle de mon père. Et si je rentre chez mon père sans le garçon,	30 Therefore, if I would have gone to your servant, our father, with the boy not present, (though his life depends upon the life of him)
31 dès qu’il verra que le garçon n’est pas là, il en mourra, et tes serviteurs auront fait descendre les cheveux blancs de notre père, dans la tristesse, au séjour des morts.	31 and if he were to see that he is not with us, he would die, and your servants will lead his grey hairs down with sorrow to the grave.
32 “Je me suis porté garant du garçon auprès de mon père et je lui ai dit: ‘Si je ne le ramène pas, je serai coupable envers mon père pour toujours.’	32 Let me be your very own servant, for I accepted this one into my trust, and I promised, saying: ‘Unless I lead him back, I will be guilty of a sin against my father for all time.’
33 Maintenant donc, permets que moi, ton serviteur, je reste à la place du garçon comme ton esclave, et que le garçon s’en retourne avec ses frères. Je ne pourrais pas supporter le malheur qui frapperait mon père!”	33 And so I, your servant, will remain in place of the boy, in ministry to my lord, and then let the boy go up with his brothers.
	34 For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I appear as a witness to the calamity that will oppress my father.”
