1 Alors Joseph donna cet ordre à son intendant: “Remplis de nourriture les sacs de ces hommes, autant qu’ils peuvent en emporter, et remets l’argent de chacun à l’entrée de son sac.	1 Then Joseph gave his head steward these instructions: "Fill the men's bags with as much food as they can carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his bag.
2 Puis tu mettras ma coupe, la coupe d’argent, à l’entrée du sac du plus jeune, avec l’argent de son blé.” L’intendant fit donc ce que Joseph avait commandé.	2 In the mouth of the youngest one's bag put also my silver goblet, together with the money for his rations." The steward carried out Joseph's instructions.
3 Au lever du jour, on renvoya ces hommes avec leurs ânes.	3 At daybreak the men and their donkeys were sent off.
4 Ils venaient tout juste de sortir de la ville, ils n’étaient donc pas très loin, lorsque Joseph dit à son intendant: “Lance-toi à la poursuite de ces hommes et, lorsque tu les auras rejoints, tu leur diras: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?	4 They had not gone far out of the city when Joseph said to his head steward: "Go at once after the men! When you overtake them, say to them, 'Why did you repay good with evil? Why did you steal the silver goblet from me?
5 Pourquoi avez-vous volé la coupe en argent de mon maître? N’est-ce pas celle dans laquelle il boit et avec laquelle il pratique la divination? Ce que vous avez fait là va vous porter malheur.”	5 It is the very one from which my master drinks and which he uses for divination. What you have done is wrong.'"
6 L’intendant courut donc les rejoindre et leur répéta les paroles de Joseph.	6 When the steward overtook them and repeated these words to them,
7 Ils lui répondirent: “Pourquoi mon seigneur nous parle-t-il de cette façon? Nous n’avons pas l’habitude d’agir ainsi!	7 they remonstrated with him: "How can my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!
8 L’argent que nous avions trouvé sur le dessus de nos sacs, nous l’avons rapporté du pays de Canaan. Comment donc aurions-nous volé de l’argent ou de l’or dans la maison de ton maître?	8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the money that we found in the mouths of our bags. Why, then, would we steal silver or gold from your master's house?
9 Si tu trouves cette coupe sur l’un de tes serviteurs, qu’il soit mis à mort, et que nous devenions les esclaves de mon seigneur.”	9 If any of your servants is found to have the goblet, he shall die, and as for the rest of us, we shall become my lord's slaves."
10 Il leur dit: “Soit! je vais vous juger sur vos paroles. Celui chez qui l’on trouvera la coupe sera mon esclave, et vous, vous serez libres.”	10 But he replied, "Even though it ought to be as you propose, only the one who is found to have it shall become my slave, and the rest of you shall be exonerated."
11 Sans perdre de temps, chacun déposa à terre son sac de blé et l’ouvrit.	11 Then each of them eagerly lowered his bag to the ground and opened it;
12 La fouille commença par l’aîné, et finit par le plus jeune: on trouva la coupe dans le sac de Benjamin.	12 and when a search was made, starting with the oldest and ending with the youngest, the goblet turned up in Benjamin's bag.
13 Tous alors déchirèrent leurs vêtements et, après avoir chargé leurs sacs sur leurs ânes, ils retournèrent vers la ville.	13 At this, they tore their clothes. Then, when each man had reloaded his donkey, they returned to the city.
14 Juda et ses frères rentrèrent dans la maison de Joseph; il était là et ils se prosternèrent à terre devant lui.	14 As Judah and his brothers reentered Joseph's house, he was still there; so they flung themselves on the ground before him.
15 Joseph leur dit: “Qu’avez-vous fait? Ne savez-vous pas qu’un homme comme moi est capable de tout deviner?”	15 "How could you do such a thing?" Joseph asked them. "You should have known that such a man as I could discover by divination what happened."
16 Alors Juda lui dit: “Nous n’avons rien à répondre à mon seigneur. Comment pourrions-nous nous justifier? Dieu a dévoilé la faute de tes serviteurs; nous serons donc les esclaves de mon seigneur, nous et celui dans la main duquel on a trouvé la coupe.”	16 Judah replied: "What can we say to my lord? How can we plead or how try to prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants' guilt. Here we are, then, the slaves of my lord--the rest of us no less than the one in whose possession the goblet was found."
17 Mais il leur dit: “Dieu me garde de faire cela! Celui sur qui on a trouvé ma coupe sera mon esclave, mais vous, retournez en paix vers votre père!”	17 "Far be it from me to act thus!" said Joseph. "Only the one in whose possession the goblet was found shall become my slave; the rest of you may go back safe and sound to your father."
18 Juda s’avança alors vers lui, et dit: “Je t’en supplie mon seigneur, permets-moi seulement de te dire un mot. Ne te mets pas en colère contre ton serviteur, bien que tu sois comme le Pharaon.	18 Judah then stepped up to him and said: "I beg you, my lord, let your servant speak earnestly to my lord, and do not become angry with your servant, for you are the equal of Pharaoh.
19 Mon seigneur, tu nous as interrogés; tu nous as demandé: ‘Avez-vous un père ou un frère?’	19 My lord asked your servants, 'Have you a father, or another brother?'
20 Nous te l’avons dit, à toi mon seigneur: Nous avons un père qui est vieux. Dans sa vieillesse, il a eu un garçon qui reste seul de sa mère, car son frère est mort. Et cet enfant, son père l’aime.	20 So we said to my lord, 'We have an aged father, and a young brother, the child of his old age. This one's full brother is dead, and since he is the only one by that mother who is left, his father dotes on him.'
21 Tu as ajouté en nous parlant: ‘Amenez-le moi pour que je le voie!’	21 Then you told your servants, 'Bring him down to me that my eyes may look on him.'
22 Nous t’avons répondu, à toi mon seigneur: ‘Le garçon ne peut pas quitter son père, s’il manquait à son père, celui-ci en mourrait.’	22 We replied to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father; his father would die if he were to leave him.'
23 “Alors tu nous as dit: ‘Si votre plus jeune frère ne vient pas avec vous, inutile de chercher à me voir.’	23 But you told your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes back with you, you shall not come into my presence again.'
24 Aussi, lorsque nous sommes remontés vers notre père, nous lui avons rapporté tes paroles, mon seigneur.	24 When we returned to your servant our father, we reported to him the words of my lord.
25 Et plus tard, quand notre père nous a dit de retourner pour acheter un peu de nourriture,	25 "Later, our father told us to come back and buy some food for the family.
26 nous lui avons répété: ‘Nous ne pouvons pas y aller si notre plus jeune frère ne vient pas avec nous. Nous ne partirons pas, car nous ne pourrons revoir cet homme que si notre plus jeune frère est avec nous.’	26 So we reminded him, 'We cannot go down there; only if our youngest brother is with us can we go, for we may not see the man if our youngest brother is not with us.'
27 Alors mon père nous a dit: ‘Vous savez que ma femme Rachel m’a donné deux garçons.	27 Then your servant our father said to us, 'As you know, my wife bore me two sons.
28 Le premier a disparu et j’ai dit: Il a sûrement été dévoré. Je ne l’ai jamais revu jusqu’à ce jour.	28 One of them, however, disappeared, and I had to conclude that he must have been torn to pieces by wild beasts; I have not seen him since.
29 Si vous m’enlevez encore celui-là et qu’il lui arrive malheur, vous aurez fait descendre mes cheveux blancs dans la tristesse au séjour des morts.’	29 If you now take this one away from me too, and some disaster befalls him, you will send my white head down to the nether world in grief.'
30 “Ainsi, de la vie du garçon dépend celle de mon père. Et si je rentre chez mon père sans le garçon,	30 "If then the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, whose very life is bound up with his, he will die as soon as he sees that the boy is missing;
31 dès qu’il verra que le garçon n’est pas là, il en mourra, et tes serviteurs auront fait descendre les cheveux blancs de notre père, dans la tristesse, au séjour des morts.	31 and your servants will thus send the white head of our father down to the nether world in grief.
32 “Je me suis porté garant du garçon auprès de mon père et je lui ai dit: ‘Si je ne le ramène pas, je serai coupable envers mon père pour toujours.’	32 Besides, I, your servant, got the boy from his father by going surety for him, saying, 'If I fail to bring him back to you, father, you can hold it against me forever.'
33 Maintenant donc, permets que moi, ton serviteur, je reste à la place du garçon comme ton esclave, et que le garçon s’en retourne avec ses frères. Je ne pourrais pas supporter le malheur qui frapperait mon père!”	33 Let me, your servant, therefore, remain in place of the boy as the slave of my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers.
	34 How could I go back to my father if the boy were not with me? I could not bear to see the anguish that would overcome my father."
