1 Then, after these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee. For he was not willing to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.	1 Dopo questi fatti, Gesù se ne andava per la Galilea; infatti non voleva più percorrere la Giudea, perché i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo.
2 Now the feast day of the Jews, the Feast of Tabernacles, was near.	2 Si avvicinava intanto la festa dei Giudei, quella delle Capanne.
3 And his brothers said to him: “Move away from here and go into Judea, so that your disciples there may also see your works that you do.	3 I suoi fratelli gli dissero: «Parti di qui e va’ nella Giudea, perché anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che tu compi.
4 Of course, no one does anything in secret, but he himself seeks to be in the public view. Since you do these things, manifest yourself to the world.”	4 Nessuno infatti, se vuole essere riconosciuto pubblicamente, agisce di nascosto. Se fai queste cose, manifesta te stesso al mondo!».
5 For neither did his brothers believe in him.	5 Neppure i suoi fratelli infatti credevano in lui.
6 Therefore, Jesus said to them: “My time has not yet come; but your time is always at hand.	6 Gesù allora disse loro: «Il mio tempo non è ancora venuto; il vostro tempo invece è sempre pronto.
7 The world cannot hate you. But it hates me, because I offer testimony about it, that its works are evil.	7 Il mondo non può odiare voi, ma odia me, perché di esso io attesto che le sue opere sono cattive.
8 You may go up to this feast day. But I am not going up to this feast day, because my time has not yet been fulfilled.”	8 Salite voi alla festa; io non salgo a questa festa, perché il mio tempo non è ancora compiuto».
9 When he had said these things, he himself remained in Galilee.	9 Dopo aver detto queste cose, restò nella Galilea.
10 But after his brothers went up, then he also went up to the feast day, not openly, but as if in secret.	10 Ma quando i suoi fratelli salirono per la festa, vi salì anche lui: non apertamente, ma quasi di nascosto.
11 Therefore, the Jews were seeking him on the feast day, and they were saying, “Where is he?”	11 I Giudei intanto lo cercavano durante la festa e dicevano: «Dov’è quel tale?».
12 And there was much murmuring in the crowd concerning him. For certain ones were saying, “He is good.” But others were saying, “No, for he seduces the crowds.”	12 E la folla, sottovoce, faceva un gran parlare di lui. Alcuni infatti dicevano: «È buono!». Altri invece dicevano: «No, inganna la gente!».
13 Yet no one was speaking openly about him, out of fear of the Jews.	13 Nessuno però parlava di lui in pubblico, per paura dei Giudei.
14 Then, about the middle of the feast, Jesus ascended into the temple, and he was teaching.	14 Quando ormai si era a metà della festa, Gesù salì al tempio e si mise a insegnare.
15 And the Jews wondered, saying: “How does this one know letters, though he has not been taught?”	15 I Giudei ne erano meravigliati e dicevano: «Come mai costui conosce le Scritture, senza avere studiato?».
16 Jesus responded to them and said: “My doctrine is not of me, but of him who sent me.	16 Gesù rispose loro: «La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di colui che mi ha mandato.
17 If anyone has chosen to do his will, then he will realize, about the doctrine, whether it is from God, or whether I am speaking from myself.	17 Chi vuol fare la sua volontà, riconoscerà se questa dottrina viene da Dio, o se io parlo da me stesso.
18 Whoever speaks from himself seeks his own glory. But whoever seeks the glory of him who sent him, this one is true, and injustice is not in him.	18 Chi parla da se stesso, cerca la propria gloria; ma chi cerca la gloria di colui che lo ha mandato è veritiero, e in lui non c’è ingiustizia.
19 Did not Moses give you the law? And yet not one among you keeps the law!	19 Non è stato forse Mosè a darvi la Legge? Eppure nessuno di voi osserva la Legge! Perché cercate di uccidermi?».
20 Why are you seeking to kill me?” The crowd responded and said: “You must have a demon. Who is seeking to kill you?”	20 Rispose la folla: «Sei indemoniato! Chi cerca di ucciderti?».
21 Jesus responded and said to them: “One work have I done, and you all wonder.	21 Disse loro Gesù: «Un’opera sola ho compiuto, e tutti ne siete meravigliati.
22 For Moses gave you circumcision, (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers) and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.	22 Per questo Mosè vi ha dato la circoncisione – non che essa venga da Mosè, ma dai patriarchi – e voi circoncidete un uomo anche di sabato.
23 If a man can receive circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you indignant toward me, because I have made a man whole on the Sabbath?	23 Ora, se un uomo riceve la circoncisione di sabato perché non sia trasgredita la legge di Mosè, voi vi sdegnate contro di me perché di sabato ho guarito interamente un uomo?
24 Do not judge according to appearances, but instead judge a just judgment.”	24 Non giudicate secondo le apparenze; giudicate con giusto giudizio!».
25 Therefore, some of those from Jerusalem said: “Is he not the one whom they are seeking to kill?	25 Intanto alcuni abitanti di Gerusalemme dicevano: «Non è costui quello che cercano di uccidere?
26 And behold, he is speaking openly, and they say nothing to him. Could the leaders have decided that it is true this one is the Christ?	26 Ecco, egli parla liberamente, eppure non gli dicono nulla. I capi hanno forse riconosciuto davvero che egli è il Cristo?
27 But we know him and where he is from. And when the Christ has arrived, no one will know where he is from.”	27 Ma costui sappiamo di dov’è; il Cristo invece, quando verrà, nessuno saprà di dove sia».
28 Therefore, Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying: “You know me, and you also know where I am from. And I have not arrived of myself, but he who sent me is true, and him you do not know.	28 Gesù allora, mentre insegnava nel tempio, esclamò: «Certo, voi mi conoscete e sapete di dove sono. Eppure non sono venuto da me stesso, ma chi mi ha mandato è veritiero, e voi non lo conoscete.
29 I know him. For I am from him, and he has sent me.”	29 Io lo conosco, perché vengo da lui ed egli mi ha mandato».
30 Therefore, they were seeking to apprehend him, and yet no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.	30 Cercavano allora di arrestarlo, ma nessuno riuscì a mettere le mani su di lui, perché non era ancora giunta la sua ora.
31 But many among the crowd believed in him, and they were saying, “When the Christ arrives, will he perform more signs than this man does?”	31 Molti della folla invece credettero in lui, e dicevano: «Il Cristo, quando verrà, compirà forse segni più grandi di quelli che ha fatto costui?».
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him. And the leaders and the Pharisees sent attendants to apprehend him.	32 I farisei udirono che la gente andava dicendo sottovoce queste cose di lui. Perciò i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei mandarono delle guardie per arrestarlo.
33 Therefore, Jesus said to them: “For a brief time, I am still with you, and then I am going to him who sent me.	33 Gesù disse: «Ancora per poco tempo sono con voi; poi vado da colui che mi ha mandato.
34 You shall seek me, and you will not find me. And where I am, you are not able to go.”	34 Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e dove sono io, voi non potete venire».
35 And so the Jews said among themselves: “Where is this place to which he will go, such that we will not find him? Will he go to those dispersed among the Gentiles and teach the Gentiles?	35 Dissero dunque tra loro i Giudei: «Dove sta per andare costui, che noi non potremo trovarlo? Andrà forse da quelli che sono dispersi fra i Greci e insegnerà ai Greci?
36 What is this word that he spoke, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me; and where I am, you are not able to go?’ ”	36 Che discorso è quello che ha fatto: “Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete”, e: “Dove sono io, voi non potete venire”?».
37 Then, on the last great day of the feast, Jesus was standing and crying out, saying: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink:	37 Nell’ultimo giorno, il grande giorno della festa, Gesù, ritto in piedi, gridò: «Se qualcuno ha sete, venga a me, e beva
38 whoever believes in me, just as Scripture says, ‘From his chest shall flow rivers of living water.’ ”	38 chi crede in me. Come dice la Scrittura: Dal suo grembo sgorgheranno fiumi di acqua viva».
39 Now he said this about the Spirit, which those who believe in him would soon be receiving. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.	39 Questo egli disse dello Spirito che avrebbero ricevuto i credenti in lui: infatti non vi era ancora lo Spirito, perché Gesù non era ancora stato glorificato.
40 Therefore, some from that crowd, when they had heard these words of his, were saying, “This one truly is the Prophet.”	40 All’udire queste parole, alcuni fra la gente dicevano: «Costui è davvero il profeta!».
41 Others were saying, “He is the Christ.” Yet certain ones were saying: “Does the Christ come from Galilee?	41 Altri dicevano: «Costui è il Cristo!». Altri invece dicevano: «Il Cristo viene forse dalla Galilea?
42 Does Scripture not say that the Christ comes from the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?”	42 Non dice la Scrittura: Dalla stirpe di Davide e da Betlemme, il villaggio di Davide, verrà il Cristo?».
43 And so there arose a dissension among the multitude because of him.	43 E tra la gente nacque un dissenso riguardo a lui.
44 Now certain ones among them wanted to apprehended him, but no one laid hands upon him.	44 Alcuni di loro volevano arrestarlo, ma nessuno mise le mani su di lui.
45 Therefore, the attendants went to the high priests and the Pharisees. And they said to them, “Why have you not brought him?”	45 Le guardie tornarono quindi dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei e questi dissero loro: «Perché non lo avete condotto qui?».
46 The attendants responded, “Never has a man spoken like this man.”	46 Risposero le guardie: «Mai un uomo ha parlato così!».
47 And so the Pharisees answered them: “Have you also been seduced?	47 Ma i farisei replicarono loro: «Vi siete lasciati ingannare anche voi?
48 Have any of the leaders believed in him, or any of the Pharisees?	48 Ha forse creduto in lui qualcuno dei capi o dei farisei?
49 But this crowd, which does not know the law, they are accursed.”	49 Ma questa gente, che non conosce la Legge, è maledetta!».
50 Nicodemus, the one who came to him by night and who was one of them, said to them,	50 Allora Nicodèmo, che era andato precedentemente da Gesù, ed era uno di loro, disse:
51 “Does our law judge a man, unless it has first heard him and has known what he has done?”	51 «La nostra Legge giudica forse un uomo prima di averlo ascoltato e di sapere ciò che fa?».
52 They responded and said to him: “Are you also a Galilean? Study the Scriptures, and see that a prophet does not arise from Galilee.”	52 Gli risposero: «Sei forse anche tu della Galilea? Studia, e vedrai che dalla Galilea non sorge profeta!».
53 And each one returned to his own house.	53 E ciascuno tornò a casa sua.
