CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
Whoever wishes for vengeance will find vengeance from the Lord, and he will surely be attentive to his sins.1 El hombre vengativo sufrirá la venganza del Señor, que llevará cuenta exacta de todos sus pecados.
Forgive your neighbor, if he has harmed you, and then your sins will be forgiven you when you pray.2 Perdona el agravio a tu prójimo y entonces, cuando ores, serán absueltos tus pecados.
A man holds on to anger against another man, and does he then seek a remedy from God?3 Si un hombre mantiene su enojo contra otro, ¿cómo pretende que el Señor lo sane?
He has no mercy on a man like himself, and does he then entreat for his own sins?4 No tiene piedad de un hombre semejante a él ¡y se atreve a implorar por sus pecados!
He who is but flesh holds on to anger, and does he then request forgiveness from God? Who can obtain pardon for his sins in this way?5 El, un simple mortal, guarda rencor: ¿quién le perdonará sus pecados?
Remember your very end, and let animosities cease.6 Acuérdate del fin, y deja de odiar; piensa en la corrupción y en la muerte, y sé fiel a los mandamientos;
For corruption and death are suspended over his commandments.7 acuérdate de los mandamientos, y no guardes rencor a tu prójimo; piensa en la Alianza del Altísimo, y pasa por alto la ofensa.
Remember the fear of God, and do not be angry with your neighbor.8 Evita los altercados y pecarás mucho menos, porque el hombre iracundo enciende las disputas.
Remember the covenant of the Most High, and overlook the ignorant offenses of your neighbor.9 El pecador siembra la confusión entre los amigos y crea división entre los que vivían en paz.
Refrain from strife, and you will diminish your sins.10 El fuego arde según el combustible, y la disputa se enciende en la medida del empecinamiento; según sea su fuerza, será la furia de un hombre, y según su riqueza, dará libre curso a su ira.
For a ill-tempered man enflames conflict, and a sinful man troubles his friends, and he casts hostility into the midst of those who have peace.11 Una discordia repentina enciende un fuego, y una disputa precipitada hace correr la sangre.
For the fire burns according to the wood of the forest. And the anger of a man burns according to the strength of the man. And according to his resources, he will exalt his anger.12 Si soplas una chispa, se inflama; si le escupes encima, se extingue, y ambas cosas salen de tu boca.
A hasty contention kindles a fire. And a hasty quarrel sheds blood. And an accusatory tongue brings death.13 Maldice al murmurador y al de lengua doble: ellos han arruinado a mucha gente que vivía en paz.
If you blow on a spark, it will increase to a fire. But if you spit on it, it will be extinguished. Both of these proceed from the mouth.14 La lengua triple ha hecho tambalear a muchos y los dispersó de nación en nación; ella arrasó ciudades fortificadas y echó por tierra casas de potentados;
The double-tongued whisperer is accursed. For he has disturbed many who had peace.15 hizo repudiar a mujeres valerosas y las privó del fruto de sus trabajos.
A third tongue has stirred up many, and has scattered them from nation to nation.16 El que le presta atención, no encuentra más descanso y ya no puede vivir en paz.
It has destroyed the walled cities of the wealthy, and has undermined the houses of the great.17 Un golpe de látigo deja una marca, pero un golpe de lengua quiebra los huesos.
It has cut down the virtues of the peoples, and has broken strong nations.18 Muchos han caído al filo de la espada, pero son menos que los caídos a causa de la lengua.
A third tongue has cast down virtuous women, and has deprived them of their labors.19 ¡Feliz el que está al resguardo de ella y no ha quedado expuesto a su furor, el que no ha tirado de su yugo ni ha sido atado a tus cadenas!
Whoever favors it will not have rest, nor will he have a friend in whom he may find peace.20 Porque su yugo es un yugo de hierro y sus cadenas son cadenas de bronce.
The wound of a whip causes a bruise, but the wound of the tongue will crush the bones.21 ¡Muerte funesta es la que inflige y es preferible el Abismo a una lengua así!
Many have fallen by the mouth of the sword, but not as many as have perished by their own tongue.22 Pero ella no tiene poder sobre los hombres buenos y ellos no se quemarán en sus llamas.
Blessed is he who is protected from a wicked tongue, who has not gone over to its wrath, and has not pulled its yoke, and has not been bound by its chains.23 Los que abandonan al Señor serán sus víctimas: ella los abrasará sin extinguirse, se lanzará sobre ellos como un león y los destrozará como una pantera.
For its yoke is a yoke of iron. And its chains are chains of brass.24 Por eso, rodea tu posesión con un cerco de espinas, guarda bien tu plata y tu oro;
Its death is a most wicked death. And hell is more useful than it is.25 fabrícate una balanza y una pesa para tus palabras, y una puerta y un cerrojo para tu boca.
Its continuance will not be permanent, but it will take hold of the ways of the unjust. And the just will not be burned by its flame.26 Presta atención, se sea que resbales a causa de la lengua y caigas ante los que acechan.
Those who abandon God will fall by it, and it will burn within them and not be quenched. And it will be sent upon them, like a lion, and it will wound them, like a leopard.
Hedge your ears with thorns. Do not be willing to listen to a wicked tongue. And make doors and bars for your mouth.
Melt down your gold and your silver. And make a scale for your words, and an upright bridle for your mouth.
And be attentive, lest perhaps you may slip with your tongue, and fall in the sight of your enemies, who are lying in wait for you, and then your fall may be incurable unto death.
