Job 28

Silver has its fissures where it is first found, and gold has a place where it is melted.1 Il existe, pour l'argent, des mines, pour l'or, un lieu où on l'épure.
Iron is taken from the earth, and ore, unbound by heat, is turned into brass.2 Le fer est tiré du sol, la pierre fondue livre du cuivre.
He has established a time for darkness, and he has settled on an end for all things, as well as for the stone that is in the gloom and shadow of death.3 On met fin aux ténèbres, on fouille jusqu'à l'extrême limite la pierre obscure et sombre.
The burning separates a pilgrim people from those who have been forgotten by the feet of the destitute man and from the unapproachable.4 Des étrangers percent les ravins en des lieux non fréquentés, et ils oscillent, suspendus, loin deshumains.
The land, where bread appeared in its place, has been destroyed by fire.5 La terre d'où sort le pain est ravagée en dessous par le feu.
Its stones are embedded with sapphires, and its soil, with gold.6 Là, les pierres sont le gisement du saphir, et aussi des parcelles d'or.
The bird does not know its path, nor has the eye of the vulture beheld it.7 L'oiseau de proie en ignore le sentier, l'oeil du vautour ne l'aperçoit pas.
The sons of merchants have not walked there, nor has the lioness traveled through it.8 Il n'est point foulé par les fauves altiers, le lion ne l'a jamais frayé.
He has stretched out his hand to the rocks; he has overturned the foundations of the mountains.9 L'homme s'attaque au silex, il bouleverse les montagnes dans leurs racines.
He has cut rivers through the rocks, and his eye has seen all precious things.10 Dans les roches il perce des canaux, l'oeil ouvert sur tout objet précieux.
The depths of rivers he has also examined, and he has brought hidden things into the light.11 Il explore les sources des fleuves, amène au jour ce qui restait caché.
But, in truth, where is wisdom to be found, and where is the place of understanding?12 Mais la Sagesse, d'où provient-elle? Où se trouve-t-elle, l'Intelligence?
Man does not know its price, nor is it found in the land of those who live in sweetness.13 L'homme en ignore le chemin, on ne la découvre pas sur la terre des vivants.
The abyss declares, “It is not in me.” And the sea says, “It is not with me.”14 L'Abîme déclare: "Je ne la contiens pas!" et la Mer: "Elle n'est point chez moi!"
The finest gold will not be paid for it, nor will silver be weighed in exchange for it.15 On ne peut l'acquérir avec l'or massif, la payer au poids de l'argent,
It will not be compared with the dyed colors of India, nor with the very costly stone sardonyx, nor with the sapphire.16 l'évaluer avec l'or d'Ophir, l'agate précieuse ou le saphir.
Neither gold nor crystal will be its equal; neither will vessels of gold be fitted for it.17 On ne lui compare pas l'or ou le verre, on ne l'échange point contre un vase d'or fin.
The exalted and the eminent will not be remembered in comparison with it. Yet wisdom is drawn out of concealment.18 Coraux et cristal ne méritent pas mention, mieux vaudrait pêcher la Sagesse que les perles.
The topaz of Ethiopia will not be equal to it, nor will it be compared to the purest dyes.19 Auprès d'elle, la topaze de Kush est sans valeur et l'or pur perd son poids d'échange.
So then, where does wisdom begin, and where is the place of understanding?20 Mais la Sagesse, d'où provient-elle? Où se trouve-t-elle, l'Intelligence?
It has been hidden from the eyes of all living things, just as the birds of the heavens escape notice.21 Elle se dérobe aux yeux de tout vivant, elle se cache aux oiseaux du ciel.
Perdition and death have said, “With our ears, we have heard its fame.”22 La Perdition et la Mort déclarent: "La rumeur de sa renommée est parvenue à nos oreilles."
God understands its way, and he knows its location.23 Dieu seul en a discerné le chemin et connu, lui, où elle se trouve.
For he beholds the limits of the world, and he looks upon all things that are under heaven.24 (Car il voit jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, il aperçoit tout ce qui est sous les cieux.)
He created a counterweight for the winds, and he suspended the waters to measure them.25 Lorsqu'il voulut donner du poids au vent, jauger les eaux avec une mesure;
At that time, he gave a law to the rain and a path to the resounding storms.26 quand il imposa une loi à la pluie, une route aux roulements du tonnerre,
Then he saw and explained it, and he made ready and examined it.27 alors il la vit et l'évalua, il la pénétra et même la scruta.
And he said to man, “Behold the fear of the Lord. Such is wisdom. And to withdraw from evil, this is understanding.”28 Puis il dit à l'homme: "La crainte du Seigneur, voilà la sagesse; fuir le mal, voilà l'intelligence."
