1 Als nun der Herr erfuhr, die Pharisäer hätten vernommen, daß Jesus mehr Jünger gewinne und mehr taufe als Johannes -	1 When Jesus therefore understood that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus maketh more disciples, and baptizeth more than John,
2 obwohl Jesus nicht selber taufte, sondern seine Jünger -,	2 (Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,)
3 verließ er Judäa und kehrte wieder zurück nach Galiläa.	3 He left Judea, and went again into Galilee.
4 Er mußte den Weg durch Samaria nehmen	4 And he was of necessity to pass through Samaria.
5 und kam so zu einer Stadt in Samaria, Sychar mit Namen, nahe bei dem Grundstück, das Jakob seinem Sohne Joseph gegeben hat.	5 He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, which is called Sichar, near the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Dort war der Brunnen des Jakob. Jesus nun, müde geworden von der Wanderung, setzte sich so am Brunnen nieder; es war um die sechste Stunde.	6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 Da kam eine Frau aus Samaria, um Wasser zu schöpfen. Jesus sagte zu ihr: "Gib mir zu trinken!"	7 There cometh a woman of Samaria, to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drink.
8 Seine Jünger waren nämlich in die Stadt gegangen, um Lebensmittel zu kaufen.	8 For his disciples were gone into the city to buy meats.
9 Die samaritische Frau entgegnete ihm: "Wie magst du als Jude von mir, einer samaritischen Frau, einen Trunk verlangen?" Die Juden haben nämlich keinen Verkehr mit den Samaritern.	9 Then that Samaritan woman saith to him: How dost thou, being a Jew, ask of me to drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For the Jews do not communicate with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus antwortete ihr: "Wenn du um die Gabe Gottes wüßtest und wer es ist, der zu dir sagt: Gib mir zu trinken, du würdest ihn bitten, und er gäbe dir lebendiges Wasser."	10 Jesus answered, and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God, and who he is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 Die Frau sagte zu ihm: "Herr, du hast ja kein Schöpfgefäß, und der Brunnen ist tief; woher hast du denn das lebendige Wasser?	11 The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep; from whence then hast thou living water?
12 Bist du etwa größer als unser Vater Jakob, der uns den Brunnen gab? Er selbst hat daraus getrunken sowie seine Söhne und seine Herden."	12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus antwortete ihr: "Jeden, der von diesem Wasser trinkt, wird abermals dürsten;	13 Jesus answered, and said to her: Whosoever drinketh of this water, shall thirst again; but he that shall drink of the water that I will give him, shall not thirst for ever:
14 wer aber von dem Wasser trinkt, das ich ihm geben werde, den wird nicht mehr dürsten in Ewigkeit; sondern das Wasser, das ich ihm gebe, wird in ihm zu einem Quell von Wasser, das aufsprudelt zu ewigem Leben."	14 But the water that I will give him, shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting.
15 Da sprach die Frau zu ihm: "Herr, gib mir dieses Wasser, daß ich nicht mehr dürste und hierher gehen muß, um zu schöpfen."	15 The woman saith to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.
16 Er sagte zu ihr: "Geh hin, ruf deinen Mann und komm hierher!"	16 Jesus saith to her: Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered, and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: Thou hast said well, I have no husband:
17 Die Frau erwiderte ihm: "Ich habe keinen Mann!" Jesus sprach zu ihr: "Zutreffend sagtest du: Ich habe keinen Mann.	17 dummy verses inserted by amos
18 Denn fünf Männer hast du gehabt, und der, den du jetzt hast, ist nicht dein Mann; da hast du die Wahrheit gesagt!"	18 For thou hast had five husbands: and he whom thou now hast, is not thy husband. This thou hast said truly.
19 Die Frau sagte zu ihm: "Herr, ich sehe, du bist ein Prophet.	19 The woman saith to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Unsere Väter haben auf diesem Berge Anbetung gehalten, und ihr sagt, in Jerusalem sei der Ort, wo man anbeten müsse."	20 Our fathers adored on this mountain, and you say, that at Jerusalem is the place where men must adore.
21 Jesus sprach zu ihr: "Glaube mir, Frau, es kommt die Stunde, da ihr weder auf diesem Berg noch in Jerusalem den Vater anbeten werdet.	21 Jesus saith to her: Woman, believe me, that the hour cometh, when you shall neither on this mountain, not in Jerusalem, adore the Father.
22 Ihr betet an, was ihr nicht kennt; wir beten an, was wir kennen; denn das Heil kommt aus den Juden.	22 You adore that which you know not: we adore that which we know; for salvation is of the Jews.
23 Doch es kommt die Stunde, und schon ist sie da, in der die wahren Anbeter den Vater anbeten werden in Geist und Wahrheit; denn auch der Vater sucht solche als seine Anbeter.	23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him.
24 Gott ist Geist, und die ihn anbeten, müssen in Geist und Wahrheit anbeten."	24 God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth.
25 Die Frau sagte zu ihm: "Ich weiß, daß der Messias kommt - genannt Christus -, wenn er kommt, wird er uns alles verkünden."	25 The woman saith to him: I know that the Messias cometh (who is called Christ); therefore, when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus sprach zu ihr: "Ich bin es, der mit dir redet."	26 Jesus saith to her: I am he, who am speaking with thee.
27 Währenddessen kamen seine Jünger, und sie wunderten sich, daß er mit einer Frau redete; doch sagte keiner: "Was willst du?" oder: "Was redest du mit ihr?"	27 And immediately his disciples came; and they wondered that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said: What seekest thou? or, why talkest thou with her?
28 Die Frau nun ließ ihren Wasserkrug stehen, ging in die Stadt und sagte zu den Leuten:	28 The woman therefore left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men there:
29 "Kommt und seht einen Menschen, der mir alles sagte, was ich getan habe. Ob der nicht der Messias ist?"	29 Come, and see a man who has told me all things whatsoever I have done. Is not he the Christ?
30 Da zogen sie hinaus aus der Stadt und gingen auf ihn zu.	30 They went therefore out of the city, and came unto him.
31 Unterdessen baten ihn seine Jünger: "Meister, iß!"	31 In the mean time the disciples prayed him, saying: Rabbi, eat.
32 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: "Ich habe eine Speise zu essen, die ihr nicht kennt."	32 But he said to them: I have meat to eat, which you know not.
33 Da sagten die Jünger zueinander: "Hat ihm denn jemand zu essen gebracht?"	33 The disciples therefore said one to another: Hath any man brought him to eat?
34 Jesus sprach zu ihnen: "Meine Speise ist, daß ich den Willen dessen tue, der mich gesandt hat, und daß ich vollbringe sein Werk.	34 Jesus saith to them: My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, that I may perfect his work.
35 Sagt ihr nicht: Vier Monate noch, und die Ernte kommt? Seht, ich sage euch: Erhebt eure Augen und betrachtet die Felder; sie sind weiß zur Ernte.	35 Do you not say, There are yet four months, and then the harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and see the countries; for they are white already to harvest.
36 Schon empfängt der Schnitter seinen Lohn und führt Frucht ein fürs ewige Leben, so daß der Sämann und der Schnitter zugleich sich freuen.	36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life everlasting: that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth, may rejoice together.
37 Denn hier bewahrheitet sich das Wort: Ein anderer ist, der sät, und ein anderer, der erntet.	37 For in this is the saying true: That it is one man that soweth, and it is another that reapeth.
38 Ich habe euch gesandt zu ernten, wofür ihr nicht gearbeitet habt. Andere haben gearbeitet, und ihr seid in ihre Arbeit eingetreten."	38 I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labour: others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours.
39 Aus jener Stadt aber kamen viele von den Samaritern zum Glauben an ihn durch das Wort der Frau, die bezeugte: "Er sagte mir alles, was ich getan habe."	39 Now of that city many of the Samaritans believed in him, for the word of the woman giving testimony: He told me all things whatsoever I have done.
40 Als nun die Samariter zu ihm kamen, baten sie ihn, bei ihnen zu bleiben, und er blieb zwei Tage dort.	40 So when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired that he would tarry there. And he abode there two days.
41 Und noch weit mehr fanden zum Glauben auf sein Wort hin,	41 And many more believed in him because of his own word.
42 und sie sagten zur Frau: "Nicht mehr um deiner Rede willen glauben wir jetzt; wir haben ja selber gehört und wissen: Dieser ist wahrhaft der Heiland der Welt."	42 And they said to the woman: We now believe, not for thy saying: for we ourselves have heard him, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.
43 Nach den zwei Tagen zog er von dort weiter nach Galiläa.	43 Now after two days, he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
44 Jesus hatte ja selbst bezeugt, daß ein Prophet in seiner Vaterstadt nicht angesehen ist.	44 For Jesus himself gave testimony that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
45 Als er nun nach Galiläa kam, nahmen ihn die Galiläer auf, da sie alles gesehen hatten, was er in Jerusalem beim Feste getan hatte, denn auch sie waren zum Feste gegangen.	45 And when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he had done at Jerusalem on the festival day; for they also went to the festival day.
46 So kam er wieder nach Kana in Galiläa, wo er das Wasser zu Wein gemacht hatte. Da war ein königlicher Beamter, dessen Sohn lag krank in Kapharnaum.	46 He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum.
47 Als er hörte, Jesus sei aus Judäa nach Galiläa gekommen, ging er zu ihm und bat ihn, er möge hinabkommen und seinen Sohn heilen; denn er lag im Sterben.	47 He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
48 Jesus sprach zu ihm: "Wenn ihr nicht Zeichen und Wunder seht, glaubt ihr nicht."	48 Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not.
49 Der königliche Beamte sagte zu ihm: "Herr, komm herab, ehe mein Kind stirbt!"	49 The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die.
50 Jesus sprach zu ihm: "Geh hin, dein Sohn lebt!" Der Mann glaubte dem Worte, das Jesus ihm sagte, und ging.	50 Jesus saith to him: Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way.
51 Während er hinabging, kamen ihm schon seine Knechte entgegen und meldeten, daß sein Sohn lebe.	51 And as he was going down, his servants met him; and they brought word, saying, that his son lived.
52 Er erkundigte sich bei ihnen nach der Stunde, in der es ihm besser ging, und sie sagten zu ihm: "Gestern um die siebente Stunde verließ ihn das Fieber."	52 He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.
53 Da erkannte der Vater, daß es zu jener Stunde war, in der Jesus zu ihm gesagt hatte: "Dein Sohn lebt." Und er und sein ganzes Haus wurden gläubig.	53 The father therefore knew, that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house.
54 Dieses war das zweite Zeichen, das Jesus wiederum wirkte, als er von Judäa nach Galiläa kam.	54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.
