1 Vor dem Paschafest, da Jesus wußte, daß seine Stunde gekommen war, um hinüberzugehen aus dieser Welt zum Vater, zeigte er den Seinen, die er in dieser Welt liebte, die Liebe bis zur Vollendung.	1 Before the feast day of the Passover, Jesus knew that the hour was approaching when he would pass from this world to the Father. And since he had always loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2 Bei einem Abendmahl war es, als der Teufel dem Judas Iskariot, dem Sohne Simons, es bereits ins Herz geworfen hatte, ihn zu verraten -,	2 And when the meal had taken place, when the devil had now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,
3 er aber wußte, daß ihm der Vater alles in die Hände gegeben habe und daß er von Gott ausgegangen sei und zu Gott zurückkehre -,	3 knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he came from God and was going to God,
4 da stand er vom Mahle auf, legte sein Obergewand ab, nahm ein Linnen und umgürtete sich.	4 he rose up from the meal, and he set aside his vestments, and when he had received a towel, he wrapped it around himself.
5 Dann goß er Wasser in das Becken und begann, die Füße der Jünger zu waschen und sie zu trocknen mit dem Linnen, mit dem er umgürtet war.	5 Next he put water into a shallow bowl, and he began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped.
6 So kam er zu Simon Petrus; der aber sagte zu ihm: "Herr, du willst meine Füße waschen?"	6 And then he came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him, “Lord, would you wash my feet?”
7 Jesus antwortete ihm: "Was ich tue, verstehst du jetzt nicht, du wirst es aber nachher verstehen."	7 Jesus responded and said to him: “What I am doing, you do not now understand. But you shall understand it afterward.”
8 Petrus sagte zu ihm: "Du wirst mir in Ewigkeit nicht die Füße waschen!" Jesus erwiderte ihm: "Wenn ich dich nicht wasche, hast du nicht Gemeinschaft mit mir!"	8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you will have no place with me.”
9 Da sagte Simon Petrus zu ihm: "Herr, nicht bloß meine Füße, sondern auch die Hände und das Haupt!"	9 Simon Peter said to him, “Then Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus sprach zu ihm: "Wer ein Bad genommen, braucht sich nur die Füße zu waschen, er ist ja ganz rein. Auch ihr seid rein, aber nicht alle."	10 Jesus said to him: “He who is washed need only wash his feet, and then he will be entirely clean. And you are clean, but not all.”
11 Er wußte nämlich um seinen Verräter; darum sagte er: "Nicht alle seid ihr rein."	11 For he knew which one would betray him. For this reason, he said, “You are not all clean.”
12 Nachdem er nun ihre Füße gewaschen, sein Obergewand genommen und sich wieder niedergelassen hatte, sprach er zu ihnen: "Versteht ihr, was ich euch getan habe?	12 And so, after he washed their feet and received his vestments, when he had sat down at table again, he said to them: “Do you know what I have done for you?
13 Ihr nennt mich Meister und Herr, und mit Recht sagt ihr so; denn ich bin es.	13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you speak well: for so I am.
14 Wenn nun ich eure Füße gewaschen habe, als der Herr und als der Meister, dann sollt auch ihr einander die Füße waschen.	14 Therefore, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash the feet of one another.
15 Denn ein Beispiel gab ich euch, damit so, wie ich euch tat, auch ihr tut.	15 For I have given you an example, so that just as I have done for you, so also should you do.
16 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ein Knecht ist nicht größer als sein Herr, und ein Gesandter ist nicht größer als der, der ihn gesandt hat.	16 Amen, amen, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his Lord, and the apostle is not greater than he who sent him.
17 Wenn ihr das wißt, so seid ihr selig, wenn ihr so tut.	17 If you understand this, you shall be blessed if you will do it.
18 Nicht von euch allen rede ich; ich weiß, welche ich auserwählt habe; doch es muß das Schriftwort in Erfüllung gehen: "Der mein Brot ißt, hat seine Ferse gegen mich erhoben" (Ps 41,10).	18 I am not speaking about all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me shall lift up his heel against me.’
19 Schon jetzt sage ich es euch, ehe es geschieht, damit, wenn es geschieht, ihr glaubt, daß ich es bin.	19 And I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it has happened, you may believe that I am.
20 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer einen, den ich sende, aufnimmt, nimmt mich auf; wer aber mich aufnimmt, nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat."	20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives anyone whom I send, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me.”
21 Als Jesus dies sagte, wurde er im Geiste erschüttert, und beteuernd sprach er: "Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer von euch wird mich verraten!"	21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit. And he bore witness by saying: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that one among you shall betray me.”
22 Da blickten die Jünger einander an, ratlos sich fragend, von wem er rede.	22 Therefore, the disciples looked around at one another, uncertain about whom he spoke.
23 Einer von seinen Jüngern, der, den Jesus liebte, lag an der Brust Jesu;	23 And leaning against the bosom of Jesus was one of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved.
24 diesem winkte Simon Petrus und sagte zu ihm: "Sag, wer ist es, von dem er redet!"	24 Therefore, Simon Peter motioned to this one and said to him, “Who is it that he is speaking about?”
25 Jener lehnte sich an die Brust Jesu zurück und sagte so zu ihm: "Herr, wer ist es?"	25 And so, leaning against the chest of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus antwortete: "Der ist es, dem ich den Bissen eintauchen und geben werde." Und er tauchte den Bissen ein, nahm ihn und gab ihn dem Judas, dem Sohn des Simon Iskariot.	26 Jesus responded, “It is he to whom I shall extend the dipped bread.” And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.
27 Und nach dem Bissen fuhr der Satan in ihn. Jesus aber sagte zu ihm: "Was du tust, das tue bald!"	27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
28 Das verstand aber keiner von den Tischgenossen, wozu er es ihm sagte;	28 Now none of those sitting at table knew why he had said this to him.
29 einige nämlich meinten, weil Judas die Kasse führte, habe Jesus zu ihm gesagt: "Kaufe, was wir brauchen für das Fest", oder er solle den Armen etwas geben.	29 For some were thinking that, because Judas held the purse, that Jesus had told him, “Buy those things which are needed by us for the feast day,” or that he might give something to the needy.
30 Als nun jener den Bissen genommen hatte, ging er sogleich hinaus. Es war Nacht.	30 Therefore, having accepted the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.
31 Da er hinausgegangen war, sprach Jesus: "Nun wurde verherrlicht der Menschensohn, und Gott wurde verherrlicht in ihm.	31 Then, when he had gone out, Jesus said: “Now the Son of man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.
32 Wurde Gott verherrlicht in ihm, dann wird Gott auch ihn verherrlichen in sich, und bald wird er ihn verherrlichen.	32 If God has been glorified in him, then God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him without delay.
33 Kinder, noch eine kleine Weile bin ich unter euch; ihr werdet mich suchen, doch wie ich zu den Juden sagte: Wohin ich gehe, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen, so sage ich jetzt auch zu euch.	33 Little sons, for a brief while, I am with you. You shall seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go,’ so also I say to you now.
34 Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch, daß ihr einander liebt; wie ich euch geliebt habe, so sollt auch ihr einander lieben.	34 I give you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also must you love one another.
35 Daran werden alle erkennen, daß ihr meine Jünger seid, wenn ihr Liebe habt untereinander."	35 By this, all shall recognize that you are my disciples: if you will have love for one another.”
36 Simon Petrus sagte zu ihm: "Herr, wohin gehst du?" Jesus antwortete: "Wohin ich gehe, dahin kannst du mir jetzt nicht folgen, doch wirst du mir später folgen."	36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus responded: “Where I am going, you are not able to follow me now. But you shall follow afterward.”
37 Petrus sprach zu ihm: "Herr, warum kann ich dir jetzt nicht folgen? Mein Leben will ich hingeben für dich."	37 Peter said to him: “Why am I unable to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”
38 Jesus erwiderte [ihm]: "Dein Leben willst du hingeben für mich? Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Nicht wird krähen der Hahn, bevor du mich dreimal verleugnet hast."	38 Jesus answered him: “You will lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the rooster will not crow, until you deny me three times.”
