1 Wer liebhat seinen Sohn, hält stets den Stock für ihn bereit, damit er sich am Ende freuen kann.	1 He that loveth his son causeth him oft to feel the rod, that he may have joy of him in the end.
2 Wer seinen Sohn bestraft, wird Freude an ihm haben und sich vor den Bekannten seiner rühmen können.	2 He that chastiseth his son shall have joy in him, and shall rejoice of him among his acquaintance.
3 Wer seinen Sohn belehrt, erregt den Neid des Feindes und kann vor Freunden über ihn frohlocken.	3 He that teacheth his son grieveth the enemy: and before his friends he shall rejoice of him.
4 Es ist, wenn einst der Vater stirbt, als wäre er nicht tot, er hat ja doch sein Ebenbild zurückgelassen.	4 Though his father die, yet he is as though he were not dead: for he hath left one behind him that is like himself.
5 Solang er lebt, kann er mit Freuden auf ihn blicken, und wenn er stirbt, dann hat er keinen Kummer.	5 While he lived, he saw and rejoiced in him: and when he died, he was not sorrowful.
6 Er hinterläßt für Feinde einen Rächer, für Freunde einen, der den Dank abstattet.	6 He left behind him an avenger against his enemies, and one that shall requite kindness to his friends.
7 Wer seinen Sohn verwöhnt, verbindet seine Wunden, und unter jedem Schrei erbebt sein Herz.	7 He that maketh too much of his son shall bind up his wounds; and his bowels will be troubled at every cry.
8 Ein ungeübtes Pferd geht hart, ein zügelloser Sohn geht jählings durch.	8 An horse not broken becometh headstrong: and a child left to himself will be wilful.
9 Verzärtle deinen Sohn, so setzt er dich in Schrecken, scherze du mit ihm, so wird er dich betrüben!	9 Cocker thy child, and he shall make thee afraid: play with him, and he will bring thee to heaviness.
10 Lach nicht mit ihm, damit du nicht Verdruß erlebst und dir am Ende deine Zähne stumpf machst!	10 Laugh not with him, lest thou have sorrow with him, and lest thou gnash thy teeth in the end.
11 Laß ihm die Herrschaft nicht in seiner Jugend, und dulde seine schlimmen Streiche nicht!	11 Give him no liberty in his youth, and wink not at his follies.
12 Beug ihm den Kopf in seiner Jugendzeit, und schlag ihn aufs Gesäß, solang er klein ist, daß er nicht widerspenstig wird und gegen dich sich auflehnt und dir durch ihn ein Herzeleid entsteht!	12 Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat him on the sides while he is a child, lest he wax stubborn, and be disobedient unto thee, and so bring sorrow to thine heart.
13 Bestrafe deinen Sohn und mach sein Joch ihm schwer, damit er nicht in Torheit gegen dich sein Haupt erhebt!	13 Chastise thy son, and hold him to labour, lest his lewd behaviour be an offence unto thee.
14 Besser arm, jedoch gesunden Leibes, als reich und kranken Körpers!	14 Better is the poor, being sound and strong of constitution, than a rich man that is afflicted in his body.
15 Ein Leben in Gesundheit ziehe ich dem Golde vor und frohen Sinn den Perlen.	15 Health and good estate of body are above all gold, and a strong body above infinite wealth.
16 Kein Reichtum übertrifft den Reichtum der Gesundheit, kein Gut ein heiteres Gemüt.	16 There is no riches above a sound body, and no joy above the joy of the heart.
17 Besser sterben als ein nutzlos Leben, und besser ist die ew'ge Ruhe als beständig Leid.	17 Death is better than a bitter life or continual sickness.
18 Leckerbissen, dargeboten dem verschloss'nen Mund, sind wie die Opferspeise, hingestellt vor Götzen.	18 Delicates poured upon a mouth shut up are as messes of meat set upon a grave.
19 Was nützt sie wohl den Heidengötzen, die nicht essen und nicht riechen können? So steht es mit dem Menschen, der zwar Reichtum hat, ihn aber dennoch nicht genießen kann.	19 What good doeth the offering unto an idol? for neither can it eat nor smell: so is he that is persecuted of the Lord.
20 Mit seinen Augen sieht er ihn und seufzt wie ein Entmannter, der umarmt ein Mädchen.	20 He seeth with his eyes and groaneth, as an eunuch that embraceth a virgin and sigheth.
21 Gib deine Seele nicht den Sorgen hin, und bring dich nicht zu Fall mit deinem Grübeln!	21 Give not over thy mind to heaviness, and afflict not thyself in thine own counsel.
22 Die Herzensfreude ist dem Menschen Leben, und Frohsinn mehrt dem Menschen seine Lebenstage.	22 The gladness of the heart is the life of man, and the joyfulness of a man prolongeth his days.
23 Beschwichtige dich selbst, beruhige dein Herz, und halte den Verdruß dir fern! Denn viele hat die Sorge schon getötet, und der Verdruß ist nie von Nutzen.	23 Love thine own soul, and comfort thy heart, remove sorrow far from thee: for sorrow hath killed many, and there is no profit therein.
24 Neid und Zorn verkürzen das Leben, und vor der Zeit macht Sorge alt.	24 Envy and wrath shorten the life, and carefulness bringeth age before the time.
25 Der Schlaf des Frohen schmeckt wie Leckerbissen, und seine Mahlzeit mundet ihm.	25 A cheerful and good heart will have a care of his meat and diet.
