1 David musterte seine Kriegsleute. Er setzte über sie Führer von Tausendschaften und Oberste über Hundertschaften.	1 David reviewed the troops who were with him and appointed commanders of thousands andcommanders of hundreds to lead them.
2 Dann teilte David das Volk in drei Teile; ein Drittel unter dem Befehl Joabs, ein Drittel unter Abischaj, dem Sohn der Zeruja und Bruder Joabs, und ein Drittel unter Ittaj aus Gat. Der König sprach zum Kriegsvolk: "Auch ich werde mit euch in den Kampf ausrücken."	2 David divided the army into three groups, one under the command of Joab, another under thecommand of Abishai son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and the third under the command of Ittai the Gittite.David then said to the troops, 'I shal take the field in person with you.'
3 Das Volk entgegnete: "Du darfst nicht ausziehen; denn wenn wir fliehen, wird man kein Leid um uns tragen. Fällt die Hälfte von uns, so wird man ebenfalls kein Leid um uns tragen; du jedoch bist wie 10 000 von uns. Gegenwärtig ist es besser, wenn du uns von der Stadt aus zu Hilfe kommst."	3 But the troops replied, 'You are not to take the field. No one wil bother about us if we run away, theywil not even bother about us if half of us are kil ed, but you are ten thousand times more valuable. So it is betterif you stay inside the town, in case we need reinforcements.'
4 Der König entgegnete ihnen: "Ich werde tun, was euch gutdünkt." Der König trat an das Tor, während das gesamte Kriegsvolk in Hundert- und Tausendschaften ausrückte.	4 David said, 'I will do what you think best.' And the king stood beside the gate as the troops marchedout by their hundreds and their thousands.
5 An Joab, Abischaj und Ittaj erließ der König den Befehl: "Verschont mir den jungen Absalom!" Das ganze Kriegsvolk hörte es, als der König Absaloms wegen den Obersten Befehle erteilte.	5 The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake, treat young Absalom gently!' And thetroops all heard the king give al the commanders these orders about Absalom.
6 Das Kriegsvolk rückte gegen Israel zu Felde. Im Walde Ephraim entbrannte die Schlacht.	6 So the troops marched out into the open to engage Israel, and the battle took place in the Forest ofEphraim.
7 Dort wurden Israels Leute von Davids Kriegsknechten geschlagen. Groß war ihre Niederlage an jenem Tag. Die Verluste betrugen 20 000 Mann.	7 There, the army of Israel was beaten by David's retainers; it was a great defeat that day, with twentythousand casualties.
8 Der Kampf breitete sich dort über das ganze Waldgelände hin aus; der Wald vertilgte an jenem Tag mehr Leute als das Schwert fraß.	8 The fighting spread throughout the region and that day the forest claimed more victims than the sword.
9 Der Zufall wollte es, daß Absalom den Kriegsknechten Davids unter die Augen kam. Er ritt auf einem Maultier. Das Maultier kam unter das Astwerk einer großen Eiche. Absaloms Kopf blieb an der Eiche hängen, er schwebte zwischen Himmel und Erde, da das Maultier unter ihm weggelaufen war.	9 Absalom happened to run into some of David's guards. Absalom was riding his mule and the mulepassed under the thick branches of a great oak. Absalom's head got caught in the oak and he was left hangingbetween heaven and earth, while the mule he was riding went on.
10 Ein Mann merkte es und meldete dem Joab: "Höre, ich habe Absalom an der Eiche hängen sehen!"	10 Someone saw this and reported to Joab, 'I have just seen Absalom hanging from an oak.'
11 Joab sprach zu dem Mann, der ihm die Nachricht übermittelte: "Wenn du ihn sahst, warum hast du ihn dort nicht zu Boden geschlagen? Ich hätte dir gern zehn Silberlinge und einen Gürtel geschenkt."	11 Joab said to the man who had informed him, 'If you saw him, why did you not strike him to theground then and there? I would have made it my business to give you ten silver shekels and a belt!'
12 Der Mann erwiderte Joab: "Und wenn man tausend Silberlinge aufzählen wollte so würde ich meinen Arm nicht gegen den Königssohn ausstrecken; denn vor unsern Ohren hat der König dir, Abischaj und Ittaj befohlen: Achtet mir auf den jungen Absalom!	12 The man replied to Joab, 'Even if I could feel the weight of a thousand silver shekels in my hand, Iwould not lift my hand against the king's son. In our own hearing, the king gave you and Abishai and Ittai theseorders, "For my sake, spare young Absalom."
13 Oder hätte ich mir selbst etwas vorlügen sollen? Dem König bleibt ja doch nichts geheim, und auch du würdest dann abseits stehen."	13 Even if I had deceived myself, nothing stays hidden from the king and you would have dissociatedyourself from me.'
14 Joab entgegnete: "Ich will mich mit dir nicht aufhalten!" Er nahm drei Speere in seine Hand und stieß sie Absalom ins Herz, der noch lebend an der Eiche hing.	14 Joab then said, 'I cannot waste time arguing with you!' And, taking three darts in his hand, he plantedthem in Absalom's heart, while he was stil alive, deep in the oak-tree.
15 Zehn Krieger, Joabs Waffenträger, kamen herzu und schlugen Absalom vollends tot.	15 Ten soldiers, Joab's armour-bearers, then came in close, struck Absalom and kil ed him.
16 Dann ließ Joab die Posaune ertönen, und das Kriegsvolk verfolgte die Israeliten nicht mehr weiter; denn Joab zog das Kriegsvolk zurück.	16 Joab then had the trumpet sounded, and the troops left off pursuing Israel, since Joab held thetroops back.
17 Sie nahmen Absalom, warfen ihn im Wald in eine tiefe Grube und schichteten über ihm einen großen Steinhaufen. Alle Israeliten flohen in ihre Zelte.	17 They took Absalom, flung him into a deep pit in the forest and raised a huge cairn over him. Al theIsraelites had fled, dispersing to their homes.
18 Absalom hatte sich schon zu Lebzeiten das Denkmal, das im Königstal steht, errichten lassen, denn er dachte sich: "Ich habe keinen Sohn, um meinen Namen in Andenken zu erhalten." Er nannte das Denkmal nach seinem Namen. So heißt es noch heute "Säule Absaloms".	18 Now, during his lifetime, Absalom had made and erected a pillar to himself, which is in the Val ey ofthe King. 'I have no son', he said, 'to preserve the memory of my name.' He gave his own name to the pil ar, andtoday it is still cal ed Absalom's Monument.
19 Achimaaz, der Sohn Zadoks, sprach: "Hineilen will ich und dem König die Freudenbotschaft bringen, daß der Herr ihm wider seine Feinde zum Recht verholfen hat!"	19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run and tel the king the good news that Yahweh has vindicatedhis cause by ridding him of his enemies.'
20 Doch Joab entgegnete ihm: "Du bist heute nicht der geeignete Mann, die gute Nachricht zu übermitteln. An einem andern Tag magst du Bote sein. Heute darfst du die Botschaft nicht bringen, und zwar deshalb, weil der Sohn des Königs tot ist."	20 But Joab said, 'Today you would be no bearer of good news, some other day you may be; but todayyou would not be bringing good news, since the king's son is dead.'
21 Joab befahl dem Kuschiten: "Gehe hin, melde dem König, was du gesehen!" Der Kuschit verbeugte sich vor Joab und lief weg.	21 Joab then said to the Cushite, 'Go and tel the king what you have seen.' The Cushite prostratedhimself to Joab and ran off.
22 Wiederum meldete sich Achimaaz, der Sohn des Zadok, bei Joab: "Ganz gleich, auch ich werde hinter dem Kuschiten forteilen." Doch Joab erwiderte: "Wozu willst du denn hinlaufen, mein Sohn? Du bringst ja keine Freudenbotschaft!"	22 But Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted. 'Come what may,' he said to Joab, 'please let me run after theCushite.' 'My son,' Joab said, 'why run? You wil get no reward for your news.'
23 Doch er gab zur Antwort: "Es ist gleich, ich eile hin." Da sagte Joab zu ihm: "Eile hin!" Achimaaz nahm laufend den Weg durch die Jordangegend und überholte den Kuschiten.	23 But he replied, 'Come what may, let me run!' and Joab said 'Run, then!' So Ahimaaz ran off along theroad through the Plain, outrunning the Cushite.
24 David saß zwischen den beiden Toren. Der Späher war auf das Dach des Tores, auf die Mauer gestiegen. Er erhob seine Augen und sah, wie ein Mann allein angelaufen kam.	24 David was sitting between the two gates. The sentry, having gone up to the roof of the gate, lookedout from the ramparts and saw a man running alone.
25 Der Wächter rief und machte dem König davon Meldung. Der König sprach: "Wenn es ein einzelner Mann ist, dann hat er eine gute Nachricht auf seinen Lippen." Dieser kam näher und näher.	25 The sentry cal ed down to the king and told him. The king said, 'If he is alone, he is bringing goodnews.'
26 Da sah der Wächter einen zweiten Mann heraneilen. Er rief zum Tor gewandt: "Noch ein einzelner Mann läuft heran." Der König antwortete: "Auch dieser hat sicherlich etwas Gutes zu melden."	26 As the man drew steadily nearer, the lookout man saw another man running, and the sentry abovethe gate shouted, 'Here comes another man, running alone!' David said, 'He too is a bearer of good news.'
27 Der Wächter meinte: "Soviel ich sehe, gleicht der erste in seinem Ausschreiten dem Achimaaz, dem Sohn Zadoks." Der König entgegnete: "Es ist ein guter Mann; er kommt gewiß mit einer frohen Nachricht."	27 The sentry said, 'I recognise the way the first man runs; Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs like that.' 'He is agood man', said the king, 'and comes with good news.'
28 Achimaaz rief dem König zu: "Heil!" Er huldigte ihm, das Angesicht zur Erde gewandt. Dann sprach er: "Gepriesen sei der Herr, dein Gott! Er hat die Männer, die ihre Hände gegen meinen Gebieter und König erhoben haben, ausgeliefert."	28 Ahimaaz went up to the king. 'All hail!' he said, prostrating himself on the ground before the king.'Blessed be Yahweh your God', he said, 'who has handed over the men who rebel ed against my lord the king!'
29 Der König fragte: "Geht es dem Jüngling Absalom gut?" Achimaaz erwiderte: "Ich sah ein wildes Durcheinander, als Joab, der Knecht des Königs, deinen Knecht fortsandte. Ich habe aber nicht erfahren, was eigentlich los war."	29 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked. Ahimaaz replied, 'I saw a great commotion whenJoab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, but I do not know what it was.'
30 Der König befahl: "Wende dich und stelle dich dorthin!" Er ging abseits und stellte sich hin.	30 The king said, 'Go and stand over there.' He stood to one side and waited.
31 Da kam auch der Kuschit und meldete: "Verkündet wird meinem Gebieter und König, daß der Herr dir heute Recht verschafft hat vor all denen, die sich wider dich empörten."	31 Then the Cushite arrived. 'Good news for my lord the king!' the Cushite shouted. 'Today Yahweh hasvindicated your cause, by ridding you of al who had risen up against you.'
32 Der König fragte den Kuschiten: "Geht es dem jungen Absalom gut?" Der Kuschit antwortete: "Wie dem Burschen, so möge es den Feinden meines Gebieters und Königs und allen ergehen, die sich zum Unheil wider dich empören!"	32 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked the Cushite. 'May the enemies of my lord the king',the Cushite answered, 'and al who rise up to harm you, share the fate of that young man!'
