1 ויהי איש חולה לעזר שמו מבית היני כפר מרים ומרתא אחותה	1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .
2 היא מרים אשר משחה את האדון בשמן המר ותנגב את רגליו בשערותיה ועתה לעזר אחיה חלה	2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.
3 ותשלחנה אחיותיו אליו לאמר אדני הנה זה אשר אהבת חלה הוא	3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'
4 וישמע ישוע ויאמר זאת המחלה איננה למות כי אם לכבוד האלהים למען יכבד בה בן האלהים	4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'
5 וישוע אהב את מרתא ואת אחותה ואת לעזר	5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,
6 ויהי כשמעו כי חלה ויתמהמה וישב יומים במקום אשר הוא שם	6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days
7 מאחרי כן אמר לתלמידיו לכו ונשובה לארץ יהודה	7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'
8 ויאמרו אליו תלמידיו רבי עתה זה בקשו היהודים לסקלך ואתה תשוב שמה	8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'
9 ויען ישוע הלא שתים עשרה שעות ליום איש כי ילך ביום לא יכשל כי יראה אור העולם הזה	9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;
10 אבל ההלך בלילה יכשל כי האור אין בו	10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.
11 כזאת דבר ואחרי כן אמר אליהם לעזר ידידנו ישן הוא ואנכי הלך למען אעירנו	11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'
12 ויאמרו תלמידיו אדני אם ישן הוא יושע	12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'
13 וישוע דבר על מותו והמה חשבו כי על מנוחת השנה דבר	13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';
14 אז גלה ישוע את אזנם ויאמר אליהם לעזר מת	14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;
15 ושמח אני בגללכם כי לא הייתי שם למען תאמינו ועתה נסעה ונלכה אליו	15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'
16 ויאמר תומא הנקרא דידומוס אל התלמידים חבריו נלכה גם אנחנו למען נמות עמו	16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'
17 ויבא ישוע וימצאהו זה ארבעה ימים שכב בקבר	17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.
18 ובית היני היה קרוב לירושלים כדרך חמש עשרה ריס	18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,
19 ורבים מן היהודים באו בית מרתא ומרים לנחם אתהן על אחיהן	19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 ויהי כשמע מרתא כי ישוע בא ותצא לקרתו ומרים יושבת בבית	20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.
21 ותאמר מרתא אל ישוע אדני אלו היית פה כי אז לא מת אחי	21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,
22 וגם עתה ידעתי כי כל אשר תשאל מאת אלהים יתן לך אלהים	22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'
23 ויאמר אליה ישוע קום יקום אחיך	23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'
24 ותאמר אליו מרתא ידעתי כי יקום בתקומה ביום האחרון	24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'
25 ויאמר אליה ישוע אנכי התקומה והחיים המאמין בי יחיה גם כי ימות	25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,
26 וכל החי אשר יאמין בי לא ימות לעולם התאמיני זאת	26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?
27 ותאמר אליו כן אדני האמנתי כי אתה המשיח בן האלהים הבא לעולם	27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'
28 ויהי אחר דברה זאת ותלך ותקרא למרים אחותה בסתר לאמר הנה המורה פה וקרא לך	28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'
29 היא שמעה ותמהר לקום ותבא אליו	29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.
30 וישוע טרם יבא אל הכפר כי עודנו עמד במקום אשר פגשתו שם מרתא	30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.
31 והיהודים אשר באו אל ביתה לנחמה כראותם את מרים כי קמה פתאם ותצא הלכו אחריה באמרם כי הלכה לה אל הקבר לבכות שמה	31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 ותבא מרים אל המקום אשר ישוע עמד שם ותרא אתו ותפל לרגליו ותאמר לו אדני אלו היית פה כי אז לא מת אחי	32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'
33 ויהי כראות ישוע אתה בכיה וגם היהודים אשר באו אתה בכים ותזעם רוחו ויהי מרעיד	33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,
34 ויאמר איפה שמתם אתו ויאמרו אליו אדני בא וראה	34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'
35 ויבך ישוע	35 Jesus wept;
36 ויאמרו היהודים הנה מה גדלה אהבתו אתו	36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'
37 ומקצתם אמרו הפקח עיני העור הלא יכל לעשות שגם זה לא ימות	37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'
38 ויוסף עוד ישוע להזעם ברוחו ויבא אל הקבר והוא מערה ואבן על מבואה	38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.
39 ויאמר ישוע שאו את האבן מעליה ותאמר אליו מרתא אחות המת אדני הנה כבר באש כי ארבעה ימים לו	39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'
40 ויאמר אליה ישוע הלא אמרתי לך כי אם תאמיני תחזי את כבוד האלהים	40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'
41 וישאו את האבן אשר המת הושם שם וישוע נשא את עיניו למרום ויאמר אודך אבי כי עניתני	41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.
42 ואני ידעתי כי בכל עת תענני אולם בעבור העם הזה אשר סביבותי דברתי למען יאמינו בי כי אתה שלחתני	42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.
43 ויהי ככלותו לדבר ויקרא בקול גדול לעזר קום צא	43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'
44 ויצא המת וידיו ורגליו כרוכת בתכריכין ופיו לוטים בסודר ויאמר אליהם ישוע התירו אתו וילך לדרכו	44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'
45 ורבים מן היהודים אשר באו אל מרים בראותם את אשר עשה ישוע האמינו בו	45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,
46 ומקצתם הלכו אל הפרושים ויגידו להם את אשר עשה ישוע	46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.
47 אז יקהילו הכהנים הגדולים והפרושים את הסנהדרין ויאמרו מה נעשה כי האיש הלזה עשה אתות הרבה	47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?
48 אם נניח לו לעשות כלם יאמינו בו ובאו הרומיים ולקחו גם את אדמתנו וגם את עמנו	48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'
49 ואחד מהם קיפא שמו והוא כהן גדול בשנה ההיא אמר אליהם הן לא תדעו מאומה	49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;
50 אף לא תתבוננו כי טוב לנו מות איש אחד בעד הגוי מאבד העם כלו	50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'
51 וזאת לא דבר מלבו כי אם בהיותו כהן גדול בשנה ההיא נבא כי ישוע ימות בעד העם	51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-
52 ולא בעד העם לבד כי אם לקבץ גם את בני אלהים המפזרים והיו לאחדים	52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.
53 ויועצו יחדו להמיתו מהיום ההוא והלאה	53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.
54 על כן לא התהלך ישוע עוד בתוך היהודים בגלוי כי אם סר משם לארץ הקרובה אל המדבר אל עיר עפרים ויגר שם עם תלמידיו	54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.
55 ויקרבו ימי הפסח ליהודים ועם רב עלו מן הארץ ירושלימה לפני הפסח למען יטהרו	55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves
56 ויבקשו את ישוע ובעמדם בבית המקדש נדברו לאמר מה תחשבו הכי לא יבוא אל החג	56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'
57 והכהנים הגדולים והפרושים גזרו גזרה אשר אם ידע איש את מקומו יודיענו למען יתפשהו	57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.
