1 In jenen Tagen trat Johannes der Täufer auf und verkündete in der Wüste von Judäa:	1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
2 Kehrt um! Denn das Himmelreich ist nahe.	2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
3 Er war es, von dem der Prophet Jesaja gesagt hat: Eine Stimme ruft in der Wüste: Bereitet dem Herrn den Weg! Ebnet ihm die Straßen!	3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."
4 Johannes trug ein Gewand aus Kamelhaaren und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Hüften; Heuschrecken und wilder Honig waren seine Nahrung.	4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Die Leute von Jerusalem und ganz Judäa und aus der ganzen Jordangegend zogen zu ihm hinaus;	5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan,
6 sie bekannten ihre Sünden und ließen sich im Jordan von ihm taufen.	6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 Als Johannes sah, dass viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer zur Taufe kamen, sagte er zu ihnen: Ihr Schlangenbrut, wer hat euch denn gelehrt, dass ihr dem kommenden Gericht entrinnen könnt?	7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bringt Frucht hervor, die eure Umkehr zeigt,	8 Bear fruit that befits repentance,
9 und meint nicht, ihr könntet sagen: Wir haben ja Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann aus diesen Steinen Kinder Abrahams machen.	9 and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
10 Schon ist die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt; jeder Baum, der keine gute Frucht hervorbringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.	10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 Ich taufe euch nur mit Wasser (zum Zeichen) der Umkehr. Der aber, der nach mir kommt, ist stärker als ich und ich bin es nicht wert, ihm die Schuhe auszuziehen. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.	11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12 Schon hält er die Schaufel in der Hand; er wird die Spreu vom Weizen trennen und den Weizen in seine Scheune bringen; die Spreu aber wird er in nie erlöschendem Feuer verbrennen.	12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."
13 Zu dieser Zeit kam Jesus von Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen.	13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
14 Johannes aber wollte es nicht zulassen und sagte zu ihm: Ich müsste von dir getauft werden, und du kommst zu mir?	14 John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
15 Jesus antwortete ihm: Lass es nur zu! Denn nur so können wir die Gerechtigkeit (die Gott fordert) ganz erfüllen. Da gab Johannes nach.	15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented.
16 Kaum war Jesus getauft und aus dem Wasser gestiegen, da öffnete sich der Himmel, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube auf sich herabkommen.	16 And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him;
17 Und eine Stimme aus dem Himmel sprach: Das ist mein geliebter Sohn, an dem ich Gefallen gefunden habe.	17 and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
