1 Der Reichsverweser Lysias, des Königs Vormund und Verwandter, war über diese Ereignisse sehr verärgert.	1 Not long after the, Lysias the king's protector and cousin, who also managed the affairs, took sore displeasure for the things that were done.
2 Er zog daher in kürzester Zeit an die achtzigtausend Mann zusammen, dazu seine ganze Reiterei, und marschierte gegen die Juden. Er hatte vor, aus der Stadt Jerusalem eine griechische Siedlung zu machen,	2 And when he had gathered about fourscore thousand with all the horsemen, he came against the Jews, thinking to make the city an habitation of the Gentiles,
3 das Heiligtum ebenso wie die heidnischen Kultstätten zu besteuern und das Amt des Hohenpriesters jedes Jahr für Geld auszuschreiben.	3 And to make a gain of the temple, as of the other chapels of the heathen, and to set the high priesthood to sale every year:
4 Doch rechnete er überhaupt nicht mit der Macht Gottes, sondern stützte seine Überlegungen allein auf die Zehntausende von Fußtruppen, die Tausende von Reitern und seine achtzig Elefanten.	4 Not at all considering the power of God but puffed up with his ten thousands of footmen, and his thousands of horsemen, and his fourscore elephants.
5 Er drang in Judäa ein, rückte vor die Festung Bet-Zur, die hundertfünfzig Stadien von Jerusalem entfernt liegt, und bestürmte sie.	5 So he came to Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid sore siege unto it.
6 Als die Leute des Makkabäers von der Belagerung der Festung erfuhren, flehten sie mit dem ganzen Volk unter Klagen und Weinen den Herrn an, er möge doch einen guten Engel schicken, um Israel zu retten.	6 Now when they that were with Maccabeus heard that he besieged the holds, they and all the people with lamentation and tears besought the Lord that he would send a good angel to deliver Israel.
7 Der Makkabäer griff als erster nach den Waffen und hielt eine anfeuernde Rede an die anderen: Sie sollten, zusammen mit ihm, die Gefahr auf sich nehmen und ihren Brüdern zu Hilfe eilen. Geschlossen und voll Kampfesmut brachen sie auf.	7 Then Maccabeus himself first of all took weapons, exhorting the other that they would jeopard themselves together with him to help their brethren: so they went forth together with a willing mind.
8 Sie waren noch in der Nähe von Jerusalem, da erschien ihnen ein Reiter und zog in einem weißen Gewand und einer blinkenden goldenen Waffenrüstung vor ihnen her.	8 And as they were at Jerusalem, there appeared before them on horseback one in white clothing, shaking his armour of gold.
9 Gemeinsam priesen sie den barmherzigen Gott und ihr Mut wurde so groß, dass sie bereit gewesen wären, nicht nur Menschen, sondern auch die wildesten Tiere und eiserne Mauern zusammenzuschlagen.	9 Then they praised the merciful God all together, and took heart, insomuch that they were ready not only to fight with men, but with most cruel beasts, and to pierce through walls of iron.
10 Sie rückten mit ihrem himmlischen Bundesgenossen, zum Kampf bereit, vor; denn der Herr hatte Erbarmen mit ihnen.	10 Thus they marched forward in their armour, having an helper from heaven: for the Lord was merciful unto them
11 Sie stürzten sich wie Löwen auf die Feinde und erschlugen elftausend von ihnen, dazu sechzehnhundert Reiter. Alle Übrigen jagten sie in die Flucht;	11 And giving a charge upon their enemies like lions, they slew eleven thousand footmen, and sixteen hundred horsemen, and put all the other to flight.
12 die meisten davon waren verwundet und konnten nur das nackte Leben retten. Auch Lysias selbst konnte sich nur durch eine schimpfliche Flucht retten.	12 Many of them also being wounded escaped naked; and Lysias himself fled away shamefully, and so escaped.
13 Da Lysias jedoch nicht ohne Verstand war und über die erlittene Niederlage nachdachte, begriff er, dass die Hebräer unbesiegbar waren, weil der starke Gott auf ihrer Seite kämpfte.	13 Who, as he was a man of understanding, casting with himself what loss he had had, and considering that the Hebrews could not be overcome, because the Almighty God helped them, he sent unto them,
14 Darum schickte er Unterhändler, die auf einen Friedensvertrag drängen und jeder annehmbaren Bedingung zustimmen sollten; er ließ sagen, er wolle auch dem König sehr zureden, mit ihnen Freundschaft zu schließen.	14 And persuaded them to agree to all reasonable conditions, and promised that he would persuade the king that he must needs be a friend unto them.
15 Der Makkabäer ging auf alle Vorschläge des Lysias ein, ohne indes seinen Vorteil zu vernachlässigen. Alle Forderungen, die er für die Juden stellte und dem Lysias schriftlich vorlegte, nahm der König an.	15 Then Maccabeus consented to all that Lysias desired, being careful of the common good; and whatsoever Maccabeus wrote unto Lysias concerning the Jews, the king granted it.
16 Lysias schrieb an die Juden einen Brief, der folgenden Inhalt hatte: Lysias grüßt das jüdische Volk.	16 For there were letters written unto the Jews from Lysias to this effect: Lysias unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:
17 Eure Abgesandten Johanan und Abschalom haben euer Antwortschreiben vorgelegt, das unten beigefügt ist, und mich gebeten, die darin geäußerten Forderungen zu genehmigen.	17 John and Absolom, who were sent from you, delivered me the petition subscribed, and made request for the performance of the contents thereof.
18 Was in die Zuständigkeit des Königs fällt, habe ich ihm dargelegt; er ist auf jede annehmbare Bedingung eingegangen.	18 Therefore what things soever were meet to be reported to the king, I have declared them, and he hath granted as much as might be.
19 Wenn ihr weiterhin die Politik der Regierung wohlwollend aufnehmt, werde ich mich bemühen, euch Vorteile zu verschaffen.	19 And if then ye will keep yourselves loyal to the state, hereafter also will I endeavour to be a means of your good.
20 Was die Einzelheiten betrifft, habe ich euren und meinen Unterhändlern aufgetragen, mit euch zu verhandeln.	20 But of the particulars I have given order both to these and the other that came from me, to commune with you.

22 Im Brief des Königs stand dies: König Antiochus grüßt seinen Bruder Lysias.	22 Now the king's letter contained these words: King Antiochus unto his brother Lysias sendeth greeting:
23 Nachdem unser Vater zu den Göttern hinübergegangen ist, wollen wir, dass die Untertanen des Reichs ungestört ihren Beschäftigungen nachgehen können.	23 Since our father is translated unto the gods, our will is, that they that are in our realm live quietly, that every one may attend upon his own affairs.
24 Andererseits haben wir erfahren, dass die Juden mit der von meinem Vater gewünschten Übernahme griechischer Sitten nicht einverstanden sind, es vielmehr vorziehen, auf ihre eigene Art zu leben, und verlangen, dass man ihnen wieder gestattet, ihren Gewohnheiten zu folgen.	24 We understand also that the Jews would not consent to our father, for to be brought unto the custom of the Gentiles, but had rather keep their own manner of living: for the which cause they require of us, that we should suffer them to live after their own laws.
25 Wir beschließen darum, dass auch dieses Volk ungestört bleibt, und verfügen, dass man ihnen ihr Heiligtum zurückgibt und dass sie ihr Leben so einrichten können, wie es schon zur Zeit ihrer Vorfahren Brauch war.	25 Wherefore our mind is, that this nation shall be in rest, and we have determined to restore them their temple, that they may live according to the customs of their forefathers.
26 Du wirst nun am besten zu ihnen Gesandte schicken und ihnen die Hand zum Frieden reichen, damit sie die Grundlinien unserer Politik erkennen, Vertrauen fassen und ihre Angelegenheiten zu ihrer Zufriedenheit regeln können.	26 Thou shalt do well therefore to send unto them, and grant them peace, that when they are certified of our mind, they may be of good comfort, and ever go cheerfully about their own affairs.
27 Der Brief des Königs an das Volk lautete so: König Antiochus grüßt den Rat und alle übrigen Juden.	27 And the letter of the king unto the nation of the Jews was after this manner: King Antiochus sendeth greeting unto the council, and the rest of the Jews:
28 Wir hoffen, dass es euch gut geht; auch wir erfreuen uns guter Gesundheit.	28 If ye fare well, we have our desire; we are also in good health.
29 Menelaus hat uns wissen lassen, dass ihr nach Hause zu eurer Arbeit zurückkehren wollt.	29 Menelans declared unto us, that your desire was to return home, and to follow your own business:
30 Jedem also, der bis zum dreißigsten Tag des Monats Xanthikus heimkehrt, wird Friede angeboten mit der Zusicherung,	30 Wherefore they that will depart shall have safe conduct till the thirtieth day of Xanthicus with security.
31 dass die Juden ihre gewohnten Speisevorschriften und Gesetze befolgen dürfen; keiner von ihnen darf dabei irgendwie belangt werden für Vergehen, die er in Unkenntnis der Verhältnisse begangen hat.	31 And the Jews shall use their own kind of meats and laws, as before; and none of them any manner of ways shall be molested for things ignorantly done.
32 Ich habe Menelaus zu eurer Beruhigung zu euch geschickt.	32 I have sent also Menelans, that he may comfort you.
33 Lebt wohl! Im Jahr 148, am Fünfzehnten des Monats Xanthikus.	33 Fare ye well. In the hundred forty and eighth year, and the fifteenth day of the month Xanthicus.
34 Auch die Römer schickten ihnen einen Brief; er hatte folgenden Inhalt: Die römischen Gesandten Quintus Memmius und Titus Manius grüßen das jüdische Volk.	34 The Romans also sent unto them a letter containing these words: Quintus Memmius and Titus Manlius, ambassadors of the Romans, send greeting unto the people of the Jews.
35 Auch wir sind einverstanden mit den Bedingungen, die Lysias, der Verwandte des Königs, mit euch ausgehandelt hat.	35 Whatsoever Lysias the king's cousin hath granted, therewith we also are well pleased.
36 Lasst uns die Vorschläge, die er dem König unterbreiten will, zukommen, sobald ihr sie geprüft habt, damit wir eure Sache vortragen können, wie es für euch am günstigsten ist; wir sind nämlich auf dem Weg nach Antiochia.	36 But touching such things as he judged to be referred to the king, after ye have advised thereof, send one forthwith, that we may declare as it is convenient for you: for we are now going to Antioch.
37 Teilt uns deswegen auch umgehend durch Boten eure Meinung darüber mit.	37 Therefore send some with speed, that we may know what is your mind.
