1 Die Lebenszeit Saras betrug hundertsiebenundzwanzig Jahre; so lange lebte Sara.	1 The span of Sarah's life was one hundred and twenty-seven years.
2 Sie starb in Kirjat-Arba, das jetzt Hebron heißt, in Kanaan. Abraham kam, um die Totenklage über sie zu halten und sie zu beweinen.	2 She died in Kiriatharba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham performed the customary mourning rites for her.
3 Danach stand Abraham auf, ging von seiner Toten weg und redete mit den Hetitern. Er sagte:	3 Then he left the side of his dead one and addressed the Hittites:
4 Fremder und Halbbürger bin ich unter euch. Gebt mir ein Grab bei euch als Eigentum, damit ich meine Tote hinausbringen und begraben kann.	4 "Although I am a resident alien among you, sell me from your holdings a piece of property for a burial ground, that I may bury my dead wife."
5 Die Hetiter antworteten Abraham:	5 The Hittites answered Abraham: "Please, sir,
6 Hör uns an, Herr! Du bist ein Gottesfürst in unserer Mitte. In der vornehmsten unserer Grabstätten darfst du deine Tote begraben. Keiner von uns wird dir seine Grabstätte versagen und deiner Toten das Begräbnis verweigern.	6 listen to us! You are an elect of God among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our burial sites. None of us would deny you his burial ground for the burial of your dead."
7 Abraham aber stand auf, verneigte sich tief vor den Bürgern des Landes, den Hetitern,	7 Abraham, however, began to bow low before the local citizens, the Hittites,
8 verhandelte mit ihnen und sagte: Wenn ihr damit einverstanden seid, dass ich meine Tote hinausbringe und begrabe, dann hört mich an und setzt euch für mich ein bei Efron, dem Sohn Zohars!	8 while he appealed to them: "If you will allow me room for burial of my dead, listen to me! 10 Efron saß unter den Hetitern. Der Hetiter Efron antwortete Abraham, sodass es die Hetiter, alle, die zum Tor seiner Stadt Zutritt hatten, hören konnten:	10 Now Ephron was present with the Hittites. So Ephron the Hittite replied to Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites who sat on his town council:
11 Nein, Herr, hör mich an: Das Grundstück überlasse ich dir und die Höhle darauf überlasse ich dir; in Gegenwart der Söhne meines Volkes überlasse ich sie dir. Begrab deine Tote!	11 "Please, sir, listen to me! I give you both the field and the cave in it; in the presence of my kinsmen I make this gift. Bury your dead!"
12 Da verneigte sich Abraham tief in Gegenwart der Bürger des Landes	12 But Abraham, after bowing low before the local citizens, addressed Ephron in the hearing of these men:
13 und sagte zu Efron, sodass es die Bürger des Landes hören konnten: Hör mich doch, bitte, an: Ich zahle das Geld für das Grundstück. Nimm es von mir an, damit ich dort meine Tote begrabe.	13 "Ah, if only you would please listen to me! I will pay you the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there."
14 Efron antwortete Abraham:	14 Ephron replied to Abraham, "Please,
15 Herr, hör mich an! Land im Wert von vierhundert Silberstücken, was bedeutet das schon unter uns? Begrab nur deine Tote!	15 sir, listen to me! A piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver--what is that between you and me, as long as you can bury your dead?"
16 Abraham hörte auf Efron und wog ihm den Geldbetrag ab, den er in Gegenwart der Hetiter genannt hatte, vierhundert Silberstücke zum üblichen Handelswert.	16 Abraham accepted Ephron's terms; he weighed out to him the silver that Ephron had stipulated in the hearing of the Hittites, four hundred shekels of silver at the current market value.
17 So ging das Grundstück Efrons in Machpela bei Mamre, das Feld mit der Höhle darauf und mit allen Bäumen auf dem Grundstück in seiner ganzen Ausdehnung ringsum,	17 Thus Ephron's field in Machpelah, facing Mamre, together with its cave and all the trees anywhere within its limits, was conveyed
18 in den Besitz Abrahams über, in Gegenwart der Hetiter, aller, die zum Tor seiner Stadt Zutritt hatten.	18 to Abraham by purchase in the presence of all the Hittites who sat on Ephron's town council.
19 Dann begrub Abraham seine Frau Sara in der Höhle des Grundstücks von Machpela bei Mamre, das jetzt Hebron heißt, in Kanaan.	19 After this transaction, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
20 Das Grundstück samt der Höhle darauf war also von den Hetitern als Grabstätte in den Besitz Abrahams übergegangen.	20 Thus the field with its cave was transferred from the Hittites to Abraham as a burial place.
