Genesis 18

1 Der Herr erschien Abraham bei den Eichen von Mamre. Abraham saß zur Zeit der Mittagshitze am Zelteingang.	1 Then the Lord appeared to him, in the steep valley of Mamre, when he was sitting at the door of his tent, in the very heat of the day.
2 Er blickte auf und sah vor sich drei Männer stehen. Als er sie sah, lief er ihnen vom Zelteingang aus entgegen, warf sich zur Erde nieder	2 And when he had lifted up his eyes, there appeared to him three men, standing near him. When he had seen them, he ran to meet them from the door of his tent, and he reverenced them on the ground.
3 und sagte: Mein Herr, wenn ich dein Wohlwollen gefunden habe, geh doch an deinem Knecht nicht vorbei!	3 And he said: “If I, O lord, have found grace in your eyes, do not pass by your servant.
4 Man wird etwas Wasser holen; dann könnt ihr euch die Füße waschen und euch unter dem Baum ausruhen.	4 But I will bring a little water, and you may wash your feet and rest under the tree.
5 Ich will einen Bissen Brot holen und ihr könnt dann nach einer kleinen Stärkung weitergehen; denn deshalb seid ihr doch bei eurem Knecht vorbeigekommen. Sie erwiderten: Tu, wie du gesagt hast.	5 And I will set out a meal of bread, so that you may strengthen your heart; after this you will pass on. It is for this reason that you have turned aside to your servant.” And they said, “Do as you have spoken.”
6 Da lief Abraham eiligst ins Zelt zu Sara und rief: Schnell drei Sea feines Mehl! Rühr es an und backe Brotfladen!	6 Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and he said to her, “Quickly, mix together three measures of the finest wheat flour and make loaves baked under the ashes.”
7 Er lief weiter zum Vieh, nahm ein zartes, prächtiges Kalb und übergab es dem Jungknecht, der es schnell zubereitete.	7 In truth, he himself ran to the herd, and he took a calf from there, very tender and very good, and he gave it to a servant, who hurried and boiled it.
8 Dann nahm Abraham Butter, Milch und das Kalb, das er hatte zubereiten lassen, und setzte es ihnen vor. Er wartete ihnen unter dem Baum auf, während sie aßen.	8 Likewise, he took butter and milk, and the calf which he had boiled, and he placed it before them. Yet truly, he himself stood near them under the tree.
9 Sie fragten ihn: Wo ist deine Frau Sara? Dort im Zelt, sagte er.	9 And when they had eaten, they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” He answered, “Behold, she is in the tent.”
10 Da sprach der Herr: In einem Jahr komme ich wieder zu dir, dann wird deine Frau Sara einen Sohn haben. Sara hörte am Zelteingang hinter seinem Rücken zu.	10 And he said to him, “When returning, I will come to you at this time, with life as a companion, and your wife Sarah will have a son.” Hearing this, Sarah laughed behind the door of the tent.
11 Abraham und Sara waren schon alt; sie waren in die Jahre gekommen. Sara erging es längst nicht mehr, wie es Frauen zu ergehen pflegt.	11 Now they were both old, and in an advanced state of life, and it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12 Sara lachte daher still in sich hinein und dachte: Ich bin doch schon alt und verbraucht und soll noch das Glück der Liebe erfahren? Auch ist mein Herr doch schon ein alter Mann!	12 And she laughed secretly, saying, “After I have grown old, and my lord is elderly, shall I give myself to the work of delight?”
13 Da sprach der Herr zu Abraham: Warum lacht Sara und sagt: Soll ich wirklich noch Kinder bekommen, obwohl ich so alt bin?	13 Then the Lord said to Abraham: “Why did Sarah laugh, saying: ‘How can I, an old woman, actually give birth?’
14 Ist beim Herrn etwas unmöglich? Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit werde ich wieder zu dir kommen; dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.	14 Is anything difficult for God? According to the announcement, he will return to you at this same time, with life as a companion, and Sarah will have a son.”
15 Sara leugnete: Ich habe nicht gelacht. Sie hatte nämlich Angst. Er aber sagte: Doch, du hast gelacht.	15 Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh.” For she was terribly afraid. But the Lord said, “It is not so; for you did laugh.”
16 Die Männer erhoben sich von ihrem Platz und schauten gegen Sodom. Abraham wollte mitgehen, um sie zu verabschieden.	16 Therefore, when the men had risen up from there, they directed their eyes against Sodom. And Abraham traveled with them, leading them.
17 Da sagte sich der Herr: Soll ich Abraham verheimlichen, was ich vorhabe?	17 And the Lord said: “How could I hide what I am about to do from Abraham,
18 Abraham soll doch zu einem großen, mächtigen Volk werden, durch ihn sollen alle Völker der Erde Segen erlangen.	18 since he will become a great and very robust nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?
19 Denn ich habe ihn dazu auserwählt, dass er seinen Söhnen und seinem Haus nach ihm aufträgt, den Weg des Herrn einzuhalten und zu tun, was gut und recht ist, damit der Herr seine Zusagen an Abraham erfüllen kann.	19 For I know that he will instruct his sons, and his household after him, to keep to the way of the Lord, and to act with judgment and justice, so that, for the sake of Abraham, the Lord may bring about all the things that he has spoken to him.”
20 Der Herr sprach also: Das Klagegeschrei über Sodom und Gomorra, ja, das ist laut geworden, und ihre Sünde, ja, die ist schwer.	20 And so the Lord said, “The outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah has been multiplied, and their sin has become exceedingly grievous.
21 Ich will hinabgehen und sehen, ob ihr Tun wirklich dem Klagegeschrei entspricht, das zu mir gedrungen ist. Ich will es wissen.	21 I will descend and see whether they have fulfilled the work of the outcry that has reached me, or whether it is not so, in order that I may know.”
22 Die Männer wandten sich von dort ab und gingen auf Sodom zu. Abraham aber stand noch immer vor dem Herrn.	22 And they turned themselves from there, and they went toward Sodom. Yet in truth, Abraham still stood in the sight of the Lord.
23 Er trat näher und sagte: Willst du auch den Gerechten mit den Ruchlosen wegraffen?	23 And as they drew near, he said: “Will you destroy the just with the impious?
24 Vielleicht gibt es fünfzig Gerechte in der Stadt: Willst du auch sie wegraffen und nicht doch dem Ort vergeben wegen der fünfzig Gerechten dort?	24 If there were fifty of the just in the city, will they perish with the rest? And will you not spare that place for the sake of fifty of the just, if they were in it?
25 Das kannst du doch nicht tun, die Gerechten zusammen mit den Ruchlosen umbringen. Dann ginge es ja dem Gerechten genauso wie dem Ruchlosen. Das kannst du doch nicht tun. Sollte sich der Richter über die ganze Erde nicht an das Recht halten?	25 Far be it from you to do this thing, and to kill the just with the impious, and for the just to be treated like the impious. No, this is not like you. You judge all the earth; you would never make such a judgment.”
26 Da sprach der Herr: Wenn ich in Sodom, in der Stadt, fünfzig Gerechte finde, werde ich ihretwegen dem ganzen Ort vergeben.	26 And the Lord said to him, “If I find in Sodom fifty of the just in the midst of the city, I will release the entire place because of them.”
27 Abraham antwortete und sprach: Ich habe es nun einmal unternommen, mit meinem Herrn zu reden, obwohl ich Staub und Asche bin.	27 And Abraham responded by saying: “Since now I have begun, I will speak to my Lord, though I am dust and ashes.
28 Vielleicht fehlen an den fünfzig Gerechten fünf. Wirst du wegen der fünf die ganze Stadt vernichten? Nein, sagte er, ich werde sie nicht vernichten, wenn ich dort fünfundvierzig finde.	28 What if there were five less than fifty of the just? Would you, despite the forty-five, eliminate the entire city?” And he said, “I will not eliminate it, if I find forty-five there.”
29 Er fuhr fort, zu ihm zu reden: Vielleicht finden sich dort nur vierzig. Da sprach er: Ich werde es der vierzig wegen nicht tun.	29 And again he said to him, “But if forty were found there, what would you do?” He said, “I will not strike, for the sake of the forty.”
30 Und weiter sagte er: Mein Herr zürne nicht, wenn ich weiterrede. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur dreißig. Er entgegnete: Ich werde es nicht tun, wenn ich dort dreißig finde.	30 “I ask you,” he said, “not to be angry, Lord, if I speak. What if thirty were found there?” He responded, “I will not act, if I find thirty there.”
31 Darauf sagte er: Ich habe es nun einmal unternommen, mit meinem Herrn zu reden. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur zwanzig. Er antwortete: Ich werde sie um der zwanzig willen nicht vernichten.	31 “Since now I have begun,” he said, “I will speak to my Lord. What if twenty were found there?” He said, “I will not put to death, for the sake of the twenty.”
32 Und nochmals sagte er: Mein Herr zürne nicht, wenn ich nur noch einmal das Wort ergreife. Vielleicht finden sich dort nur zehn. Und wiederum sprach er: Ich werde sie um der zehn willen nicht vernichten.	32 “I beg you,” he said, “not to be angry, Lord, if I speak yet once more. What if ten were found there?” And he said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”
33 Nachdem der Herr das Gespräch mit Abraham beendet hatte, ging er weg und Abraham kehrte heim.	33 And the Lord departed, after he had ceased speaking to Abraham, who then returned to his place.
