1 What advantage then hath the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision?	1 Qual è, allora, la superiorità dei Giudei? Ovvero, qual è l’utilità della circoncisione?
2 Much every way. First indeed, because the words of God were committed to them.	2 Grande sotto ogni rispetto! In primo luogo, perché ad essi furono affidati gli oracoli di Dio.
3 For what if some of them have not believed? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid.	3 E che infatti ? Forse che, se alcuni furono infedeli, potrà la loro infedeltà annullare la fedeltà di Dio?
4 But God is true; and every man a liar, as it is written, That thou mayest be justified in thy words, and mayest overcome when thou art judged.	4 No, certamente! Si riconosca invece che, se ogni uomo è mentitore, Dio è verace, come sta scritto: affinché tu sia riconosciuto giusto nelle tue parole e prevalga quando ti si giudica.
5 But if our injustice commend the justice of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust, who executeth wrath?	5 Ma ora se è vero che la nostra ingiustizia fa risaltare la giustizia di Dio, che dedurremo? che Dio è ingiusto — mi esprimo in modo umano — quando fa pesare la sua collera?
6 (I speak according to man.) God forbid: otherwise how shall God judge this world?	6 In nessun modo! Altrimenti, come potrebbe Iddio essere giudice del mondo?
7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie, unto his glory, why am I also yet judged as a sinner?	7 Se infatti, per la mia menzogna, la veracità di Dio risulta più insigne, a sua gloria, come avviene che sono ancora giudicato come peccatore?
8 And not rather (as we are slandered, and as some affirm that we say) let us do evil, that there may come good? whose damnation is just.	8 Diversamente non bisognerebbe dire — come ci si calunnia e come certuni ci fan dire —: «Facciamo il male affinché ne derivi il bene?» È giusta la condanna di tale gente.
9 What then? Do we excel them? No, not so. For we have charged both Jews, and Greeks, that they are all under sin.	9 Che ne segue dunque? Siamo noi superiori? Non del tutto; poiché abbiamo dimostrato or ora che tutti, Giudei e Greci, sono sotto il dominio del peccato,
10 As it is written: There is not any man just.	10 siccome sta scritto: Non v'è neppure uno giusto,
11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.	11 non v'è nessuno sensato; nessuno che cerchi Iddio.
12 All have turned out of the way; they are become unprofitable together: there is none that doth good, there is not so much as one.	12 Tutti hanno traviato; si son pervertiti insieme, non v'è chi faccia il bene, neppure un solo!
13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have dealt deceitfully. The venom of asps is under their lips.	13 La loro gola è un sepolcro aperto, le loro lingue tramano inganni; un veleno d’aspidi è sotto le loro labbra
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:	14 e la loro bocca è piena di maledizioni e di parole amare.
15 Their feet swift to shed blood:	15 Veloci corrono i loro piedi a versare il sangue,
16 Destruction and misery in their ways:	16 sul loro cammino lasciano devastazione e miseria.
17 And the way of peace they have not known:	17 Non hanno conosciuto la via della pace.
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.	18 Non v'è timor di Dio dinanzi agli occhi loro.
19 Now we know, that what things soever the law speaketh, it speaketh to them that are in the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be made subject to God.	19 Orbene, sappiamo bene che quanto dice la legge lo dice per coloro che sono soggetti alla legge, affinché ogni bocca ammutolisca e tutto il mondo si riconosca colpevole dinanzi a Dio;
20 Because by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified before him. For by the law is the knowledge of sin.	20 poiché nessuno sarà giustificato davanti a lui in virtù delle opere della legge; di fatto per mezzo della legge si ha solo la chiara conoscenza del peccato.
21 But now without the law the justice of God is made manifest, being witnessed by the law and the prophets.	21 Ma al presente, indipendentemente dalla legge, la giustizia di Dio si è manifestata e ad essa rendono testimonianza la Legge e i Profeti;
22 Even the justice of God, by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all them that believe in him: for there is no distinction:	22 giustizia di Dio, beninteso, per mezzo della fede in Gesù Cristo, per tutti i credenti, poiché non v'è distinzione,
23 For all have sinned, and do need the glory of God.	23 avendo tutti peccato ed essendo tutti privi della gloria di Dio.
24 Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption, that is in Christ Jesus,	24 Venendo tutti giustificati gratuitamente, per sua grazia, in virtù della redenzione compiuta nel Cristo Gesù
25 Whom God hath proposed to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to the shewing of his justice, for the remission of former sins,	25 che Iddio destinò strumento di propiziazione, col suo stesso sangue, attraverso la fede; per mostrare finalmente la sua giustizia col perdonare i peccati commessi in passato,
26 Through the forbearance of God, for the shewing of his justice in this time; that he himself may be just, and the justifier of him, who is of the faith of Jesus Christ.	26 nel tempo della pazienza divina; mostrare così la sua giustizia in questo tempo ed essere giusto col giustificare che si fonda sulla fede in Gesù.
27 Where is then thy boasting? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.	27 Dov’è, dunque, il motivo del vanto umano? È stato eliminato. È da quale legge? forse da quella delle opere? No, ma dalla legge della fede.
28 For we account a man to be justified by faith, without the works of the law.	28 Poiché riteniamo che l’uomo è giustificato per mezzo della fede senza le opere della legge.
29 Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also.	29 Forse che Dio sarebbe Dio solamente dei Giudei? Non lo è forse anche dei pagani? Sì, anche dei pagani;
30 For it is one God, that justifieth circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.	30 poiché uno solo è Dio: vello stesso che giustificherà il circonciso in virtù della fede e l’incirconciso per mezzo della fede.
31 Do we, then, destroy the law through faith? God forbid: but we establish the law.	31 Rendiamo, dunque, inefficace la legge con la fede? Niente affatto! Anzi, rendiamo salda la legge.
