1 And it came to pass, that on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes, with the ancients, met together,	1 Now it happened that one day while he was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming thegood news, the chief priests and the scribes came up, together with the elders,
2 And spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what authority dost thou these things? or, Who is he that hath given thee this authority?	2 and spoke to him. 'Tel us,' they said, 'what authority have you for acting like this? Or who gives youthis authority?'
3 And Jesus answering, said to them: I will also ask you one thing. Answer me:	3 In reply he said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one. Tel me:
4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?	4 John's baptism: what was its origin, heavenly or human?'
5 But they thought within themselves, saying: If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why then did you not believe him?	5 And they debated this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he will retort, "Why did you refuseto believe him?";
6 But if we say, Of men, the whole people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.	6 and if we say human, the whole people wil stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.'
7 And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.	7 So their reply was that they did not know where it came from.
8 And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell thee by what authority I do these things.	8 And Jesus said to them, 'Nor wil I tell you my authority for acting like this.'
9 And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for a long time.	9 And he went on to tel the people this parable, 'A man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants, andwent abroad for a long while.
10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent him away empty.	10 When the right time came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get his share of the produce of thevineyard. But the tenants thrashed him, and sent him away empty-handed.
11 And again he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treating him reproachfully, sent him away empty.	11 But he went on to send a second servant; they thrashed him too and treated him shamefully and senthim away empty-handed.
12 And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.	12 He still went on to send a third; they wounded this one too, and threw him out.
13 Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him.	13 Then the owner of the vineyard thought, "What am I to do? I wil send them my own beloved son.Perhaps they wil respect him."
14 Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.	14 But when the tenants saw him they put their heads together saying, "This is the heir, let us kil him sothat the inheritance wil be ours."
15 So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?	15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 'Now what wil the owner of the vineyard do tothem?
16 He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid.	16 He wil come and make an end of these tenants and give the vineyard to others.' Hearing this theysaid, 'God forbid!'
17 But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?	17 But he looked hard at them and said, 'Then what does this text in the scriptures mean: The stonewhich the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?
18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.	18 Anyone who fal s on that stone will be dashed to pieces; anyone it fal s on wil be crushed.'
19 And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them.	19 And the scribes and the chief priests would have liked to lay hands on him that very moment,because they realised that this parable was aimed at them, but they were afraid of the people.
20 And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor.	20 So they awaited their opportunity and sent agents to pose as upright men, and to catch him out insomething he might say and so enable them to hand him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.
21 And they asked him, saying: Master, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly: and thou dost not respect any person, but teachest the way of God in truth.	21 They put to him this question, 'Master, we know that you say and teach what is right; you favour noone, but teach the way of God in al honesty.
22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or no?	22 Is it permissible for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'
23 But he considering their guile, said to them: Why tempt you me?	23 But he was aware of their cunning and said,
24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and inscription hath it? They answering, said to him, Caesar's.	24 'Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and title are on it?' They said, 'Caesar's.'
25 And he said to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's: and to God the things that are God's.	25 He said to them, 'Well then, pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- and God what belongs to God.'
26 And they could not reprehend his word before the people: and wondering at his answer, they held their peace.	26 They were unable to catch him out in anything he had to say in public; they were amazed at hisanswer and were silenced.
27 And there came to him some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, and they asked him,	27 Some Sadducees -- those who argue that there is no resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,
28 Saying: Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he leave no children, that his brother should take her to wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.	28 'Master, Moses prescribed for us, if a man's married brother dies childless, the man must marry thewidow to raise up children for his brother.
29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.	29 Wel then, there were seven brothers; the first, having married a wife, died childless.
30 And the next took her to wife, and he also died childless.	30 The second
31 And the third took her. And in like manner all the seven, and they left no children, and died.	31 and then the third married the widow. And the same with al seven, they died leaving no children.
32 Last of all the woman died also.	32 Finally the woman herself died.
33 In the resurrection therefore, whose wife of them shall she be? For all the seven had her to wife.	33 Now, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since she had been married to all seven?'
34 And Jesus said to them: The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:	34 Jesus replied, 'The children of this world take wives and husbands,
35 But they that shall be accounted worthy of that world, and of the resurrection from the dead, shall neither be married, nor take wives.	35 but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the deaddo not marry
36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal to the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.	36 because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of theresurrection they are children of God.
37 Now that the dead rise again, Moses also shewed, at the bush, when he called the Lord, The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;	37 And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he cal s theLord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.
38 For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live to him.	38 Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him everyone is alive.'
39 And some of the scribes answering, said to him: Master, thou hast said well.	39 Some scribes then spoke up. They said, 'Wel put, Master.'
40 And after that they durst not ask him any more questions.	40 They did not dare to ask him any more questions.
41 But he said to them: How say they that Christ is the son of David?	41 He then said to them, 'How can people maintain that the Christ is son of David?
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord, sit thou on my right hand,	42 Why, David himself says in the Book of Psalms: The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at myright hand,
43 Till I make thy enemies thy footstool.	43 til I have made your enemies your footstool.
44 David then calleth him Lord: and how is he his son?	44 David here cal s him Lord; how then can he be his son?'
45 And in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples:	45 While al the people were listening he said to the disciples,
46 Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplace, and the first chairs in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts:	46 'Beware of the scribes who like to walk about in long robes and love to be greeted respectfully in themarket squares, to take the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets,
47 Who devour the houses of widows, feigning long prayer. These shall receive greater damnation.	47 who devour the property of widows, and for show offer long prayers. The more severe will be thesentence they receive.'
