1 And straightway in the morning, the chief priests holding a consultation with the ancients and the scribes and the whole council, binding Jesus, led him away, and delivered him to Pilate.	1 First thing in the morning, the chief priests, together with the elders and scribes and the rest of theSanhedrin, had their plan ready. They had Jesus bound and took him away and handed him over to Pilate.
2 And Pilate asked him: Art thou the king of the Jews? But he answering, saith to him: Thou sayest it.	2 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'
3 And the chief priests accused him in many things.	3 And the chief priests brought many accusations against him.
4 And Pilate again asked him, saying: Answerest thou nothing? behold in how many things they accuse thee.	4 Pilate questioned him again, 'Have you no reply at al ? See how many accusations they are bringingagainst you!'
5 But Jesus still answered nothing; so that Pilate wondered.	5 But, to Pilate's surprise, Jesus made no further reply.
6 Now on the festival day he was wont to release unto them one of the prisoners, whomsoever they demanded.	6 At festival time Pilate used to release a prisoner for them, any one they asked for.
7 And there was one called Barabbas, who was put in prison with some seditious men, who in the sedition had committed murder.	7 Now a man called Barabbas was then in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during theuprising.
8 And when the multitude was come up, they began to desire that he would do, as he had ever done unto them.	8 When the crowd went up and began to ask Pilate the customary favour,
9 And Pilate answered them, and said: Will you that I release to you the king of the Jews?	9 Pilate answered them, 'Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?'
10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up out of envy.	10 For he realised it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.
11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas to them.	11 The chief priests, however, had incited the crowd to demand that he should release Barabbas forthem instead.
12 And Pilate again answering, saith to them: What will you then that I do to the king of the Jews?	12 Then Pilate spoke again, 'But in that case, what am I to do with the man you call king of the Jews?'
13 But they again cried out: Crucify him.	13 They shouted back, 'Crucify him!'
14 And Pilate saith to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more: Crucify him.	14 Pilate asked them, 'What harm has he done?' But they shouted al the louder, 'Crucify him!'
15 And so Pilate being willing to satisfy the people, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.	15 So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd, released Barabbas for them and, after having Jesusscourged, he handed him over to be crucified.
16 And the soldiers led him away into the court of the palace, and they called together the whole band:	16 The soldiers led him away to the inner part of the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and cal ed thewhole cohort together.
17 And they clothe him with purple, and platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon him.	17 They dressed him up in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on him.
18 And they began to salute him: Hail, king of the Jews.	18 And they began saluting him, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'
19 And they struck his head with a reed: and they did spit on him. And bowing their knees, they adored him.	19 They struck his head with a reed and spat on him; and they went down on their knees to do himhomage.
20 And after they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own garments on him, and they led him out to crucify him.	20 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple and dressed him in his ownclothes. They led him out to crucify him.
21 And they forced one Simon a Cyrenian who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and of Rufus, to take up his cross.	21 They enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in fromthe country, to carry his cross.
22 And they bring him into the place called Golgotha, which being interpreted is, The place of Calvary.	22 They brought Jesus to the place cal ed Golgotha, which means the place of the skul .
23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh; but he took it not.	23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it.
24 And crucifying him, they divided his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.	24 Then they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots to decide what each should get.
25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.	25 It was the third hour when they crucified him.
26 And the inscription of his cause was written over: THE KING OF THE JEWS.	26 The inscription giving the charge against him read, 'The King of the Jews'.
27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.	27 And they crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and one on his left.
28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith: And with the wicked he was reputed.	28
29 And they that passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, and saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days buildest it up again;	29 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, 'Aha! So you would destroy theTemple and rebuild it in three days!
30 Save thyself, coming down from the cross.	30 Then save yourself; come down from the cross!'
31 In like manner also the chief priests mocking, said with the scribes one to another: He saved others; himself he cannot save.	31 The chief priests and the scribes mocked him among themselves in the same way with the words,'He saved others, he cannot save himself.
32 Let Christ the king of Israel come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.	32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, for us to see it and believe.' Eventhose who were crucified with him taunted him.
33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole earth until the ninth hour.	33 When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34 And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabacthani? Which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?	34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?' which means, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
35 And some of the standers by hearing, said: Behold he calleth Elias.	35 When some of those who stood by heard this, they said, 'Listen, he is cal ing on Elijah.'
36 And one running and filling a sponge with vinegar, and putting it upon a reed, gave him to drink, saying: Stay, let us see if Elias come to take him down.	36 Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink saying,'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to take him down.'
37 And Jesus having cried out with a loud voice, gave up the ghost.	37 But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
38 And the veil of the temple was rent in two, from the top to the bottom.	38 And the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
39 And the centurion who stood over against him, seeing that crying out in this manner he had given up the ghost, said: Indeed this man was the son of God.	39 The centurion, who was standing in front of him, had seen how he had died, and he said, 'In truth thisman was Son of God.'
40 And there were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joseph, and Salome:	40 There were some women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary whowas the mother of James the younger and Joset, and Salome.
41 Who also when he was in Galilee followed him, and ministered to him, and many other women that came up with him to Jerusalem.	41 These used to follow him and look after him when he was in Galilee. And many other women werethere who had come up to Jerusalem with him.
42 And when evening was now come, (because it was the Parasceve, that is, the day before the sabbath,)	42 It was now evening, and since it was Preparation Day -- that is, the day before the Sabbath-
43 Joseph of Arimathea, a noble counsellor, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, came and went in boldly to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.	43 there came Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent member of the Council, who himself lived in the hopeof seeing the kingdom of God, and he boldly went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
44 But Pilate wondered that he should be already dead. And sending for the centurion, he asked him if he were already dead.	44 Pilate, astonished that he should have died so soon, summoned the centurion and enquired if he hadbeen dead for some time.
45 And when he had understood it by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.	45 Having been assured of this by the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph
46 And Joseph buying fine linen, and taking him down, wrapped him up in the fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewed out of a rock. And he rolled a stone to the door of the sepulchre.	46 who bought a shroud, took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped him in the shroud and laid him in atomb which had been hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
47 And Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of Joseph, beheld where he was laid.	47 Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joset took note of where he was laid.
