DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 CELEBRATE il Signore; perciocchè egli è buono. Perciocchè la sua benignità dura in eterno.	1 Al eluia! Give thanks to Yahweh for he is good, his faithful love lasts for ever.
2 Così dicano quelli che sono stati riscattati dal Signore, I quali egli ha riscossi di distretta.	2 So let them say whom Yahweh redeemed, whom he redeemed from the power of their enemies,
3 E li ha raccolti da’ diversi paesi, Dal Levante e dal Ponente; dal Settentrione e dal mare.	3 bringing them back from foreign lands, from east and west, north and south.
4 Essi andavano errando per deserti, per cammini di solitudine; Non trovavano città abitata.	4 They were wandering in the desert, in the wastelands, could find no way to an inhabited city;
5 Erano affamati ed assetati; L’anima loro spasimava in loro.	5 they were hungry and thirsty, their life was ebbing away.
6 Ma, avendo gridato al Signore, mentre erano in distretta, Egli li ha tratti fuor delle loro angosce;	6 They cried out to Yahweh in their distress, he rescued them from their plight,
7 E li ha condotti per diritto cammino, Per andare in città abitata.	7 he set them on the road, straight to an inhabited city.
8 Celebrino adunque appo il Signore la sua benignità, E le sue maraviglie appo i figliuoli degli uomini.	8 Let them thank Yahweh for his faithful love, for his wonders for the children of Adam!
9 Perciocchè egli ha saziata l’anima assetata, Ed ha empiuta di beni l’anima affamata	9 He has fed the hungry to their hearts' content, filled the starving with good things.
10 Così dicano quelli che dimoravano in tenebre ed in ombra di morte, Prigioni, ritenuti in afflizione, e ne’ ferri.	10 Sojourners in gloom and shadow dark as death, fettered in misery and chains,
11 Perciocchè erano stati ribelli alle parole del Signore, Ed avevano sprezzato il consiglio dell’Altissimo;	11 for defying the orders of Yahweh, for scorning the plan of the Most High-
12 Onde egli aveva abbattuto il cuor loro con affanni, Ed erano caduti; e non vi era alcuno che li soccorresse.	12 he subdued their spirit by hard labour; if they fel there was no one to help.
13 Ma, avendo gridato al Signore, mentre erano in distretta, Egli li ha salvati dalle loro angosce;	13 They cried out to Yahweh in their distress, he rescued them from their plight,
14 E li ha tratti fuor delle tenebre, e dell’ombra della morte; Ed ha rotti i lor legami.	14 he brought them out from gloom and shadow dark as death, and shattered their chains.
15 Celebrino adunque appo il Signore la sua benignità, E le sue maraviglie appo i figliuoli degli uomini.	15 Let them thank Yahweh for his faithful love, for his wonders for the children of Adam!
16 Perciocchè egli ha rotte le porte di rame, Ed ha spezzate le sbarre di ferro	16 He broke open gates of bronze and smashed iron bars.
17 Così dicano gli stolti, ch’erano afflitti per li lor misfatti, Ne’ quali camminavano, e per le loro iniquità.	17 Fools for their rebellious ways, wretched because of their sins,
18 La cui anima abbominava ogni cibo; Ed erano giunti fino alle porte della morte.	18 finding all food repugnant, brought close to the gates of death-
19 Ma, avendo gridato al Signore, mentre erano in distretta, Egli li ha salvati dalle loro angosce.	19 they cried out to Yahweh in their distress; he rescued them from their plight,
20 Egli ha mandata la sua parola, e li ha sanati, E liberati dalle lor malattie mortali.	20 he sent out his word and cured them, and rescued their life from the abyss.
21 Celebrino adunque appo il Signore la sua benignità, E le sue maraviglie appo i figliuoli degli uomini.	21 Let them thank Yahweh for his faithful love, for his wonders for the children of Adam!
22 E sacrifichino sacrificii di lode, E raccontino le sue opere con giubilo	22 Let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices, and recount with shouts of joy what he has done!
23 Così dicano quelli che scendono nel mare sopra navi, Che fanno traffico su per le grandi acque.	23 Voyagers on the sea in ships, plying their trade on the great ocean,
24 Essi veggono le opere del Signore, E le sue maraviglie nel profondo mare.	24 have seen the works of Yahweh, his wonders in the deep.
25 Perciocchè, alla sua parola, egli fa levare il vento di tempesta, Il quale alza le onde di esso.	25 By his word he raised a storm-wind, lashing up towering waves.
26 Salgono al cielo, poi scendono agli abissi; L’anima loro si strugge di male.	26 Up to the sky then down to the depths! Their stomachs were turned to water;
27 Saltano, e traballano come un ebbro; E perdono tutto il lor senno.	27 they staggered and reeled like drunkards, and al their skill went under.
28 Ma, gridando al Signore, mentre sono in distretta, Egli li trae fuor delle loro angosce.	28 They cried out to Yahweh in their distress, he rescued them from their plight,
29 Egli acqueta la tempesta, E le onde loro si fermano.	29 he reduced the storm to a calm, and al the waters subsided,
30 Ed essi si rallegrano che sono acquetate; Ed egli li conduce al porto da loro desiderato.	30 and he brought them, overjoyed at the stillness, to the port where they were bound.
31 Celebrino adunque appo il Signore la sua benignità, E le sue maraviglie appo i figliuoli degli uomini.	31 Let them thank Yahweh for his faithful love, for his wonders for the children of Adam!
32 Ed esaltinlo nella raunanza del popolo, E laudinlo nel concistoro degli anziani	32 Let them extol him in the assembly of the people, and praise him in the council of elders.
33 Egli riduce i fiumi in deserto, E le vene delle acque in luoghi aridi;	33 He has turned rivers into desert, bubbling springs into arid ground,
34 La terra fertile in salsuggine, Per la malvagità de’ suoi abitanti.	34 fertile country into salt-flats, because the people living there were evil.
35 Egli riduce i deserti in guazzi d’acque. E la terra arida in vene d’acque;	35 But he has turned desert into stretches of water, arid ground into bubbling springs,
36 E fa quivi abitar gli affamati, I quali vi fondano città da abitare.	36 and has given the hungry a home, where they have built themselves a city.
37 E seminano campi, e piantano vigne, Che producono rendita di frutto.	37 There they sow fields and plant vines, and reap a harvest of their produce.
38 Ed egli li benedice, e moltiplicano grandemente; Ed egli non iscema i lor bestiami.	38 He blesses them and their numbers increase, he keeps their cattle at full strength.
39 Poi vengono al meno, e sono abbassati Per distretta, per avversità, e per affanni.	39 Their numbers had fal en, they had grown weak, under pressure of disaster and hardship;
40 Egli spande lo sprezzo sopra i nobili, E li fa andare errando per luoghi deserti, ove non vi è via alcuna.	40 he covered princes in contempt, left them to wander in trackless wastes.
41 E innalza il bisognoso dalla miseria, E fa che le famiglie moltiplicano a guisa di gregge.	41 But the needy he raises from their misery, makes their families as numerous as sheep.
42 Gli uomini diritti, veggendo queste cose, si rallegrano; Ma ogni iniquità si tura la bocca.	42 At the sight the honest rejoice, and the wicked have nothing to say.
43 Chi è savio? osservi queste cose, E consideri le benignità del Signore	43 Who is wise? Such a one should take this to heart, and come to understand Yahweh's faithful love.
