1 Job reprit et dit:	1 Then Job responded by saying:
2 Écoutez du moins mes paroles, cela vaudra mieux que de me consoler.	2 I beseech you to hear my words and to do penance.
3 Accordez-moi un peu la parole: tu te moqueras après que j’aurai parlé.	3 Permit me, and I will speak, and afterwards, if you see fit, you can laugh at my words.
4 Est-ce d’un humain que je me plains? Alors, n’ai-je pas raison d’être nerveux?	4 Is my dispute against man, so that I would have no reason to be discouraged?
5 Tournez-vous vers moi: j’ai de quoi vous étonner, et vous mettrez la main sur la bouche.	5 Listen to me and be astonished, and place a finger over your mouth.
6 Ce sont des choses qui m’épouvantent quand j’y songe, et j’en tremble de tout mon corps.	6 As for me, when I think it over, I am afraid, and trembling convulses my body.
7 Pourquoi les méchants restent-ils en vie? Ils font de vieux os et gagnent en pouvoir.	7 Why then do the impious live, having been lifted up and strengthened with riches?
8 Leur famille à leur côté prospère, leurs petits-enfants se multiplient sous leurs yeux.	8 They see their offspring continue before them: a commotion of close relatives and of children’s children in their sight.
9 On vit bien dans leurs maisons: pas de soucis, les coups de Dieu ne sont pas pour eux.	9 Their houses have been secure and peaceable, and there is no staff of God over them.
10 Leur taureau féconde à chaque fois, leur vache met bas sans jamais avorter.	10 Their cattle have conceived and have not miscarried; their cow has given birth and is not deprived of her newborn.
11 Ils ont des gamins comme ils ont des agneaux, ils voient s’ébattre leurs enfants:	11 Their little ones go out like a flock, and their children jump around playfully.
12 ils jouent du tambourin et de la guitare, ils dansent au son de la flûte.	12 They take up the timbrel and the lyre, and they rejoice at the sound of the organ.
13 Leurs jours s’achèvent dans le bonheur, ils descendent sans drame au séjour des morts.	13 Their days are prolonged in wealth, yet, in an instant, they descend into hell.
14 Et c’étaient eux qui disaient à Dieu: “Va-t’en! Nous ne voulons pas connaître tes volontés!	14 Who has said to God, “Depart from us, for we do not want the knowledge of your ways.
15 Pourquoi faudrait-il servir le Puissant, et qu’est-ce qu’on gagne à l’invoquer?”	15 Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And how is it helpful to us if we pray to him?”
16 Ne sont-ils pas maîtres de leur bonheur, alors même qu’ils ont tout décidé sans Dieu?	16 It is true that their good things are not in their power. May the counsel of the impious be far from me!
17 Voit-on souvent s’éteindre la lampe des méchants, le malheur fondre sur eux et la colère d’en haut détruire les malfaisants?	17 How often will the lamp of the wicked be extinguished, and a deluge overtake them, and how often will he distribute the afflictions of his wrath?
18 Sont-ils vraiment la paille qu’emporte le vent, la feuille sèche livrée au tourbillon?	18 They will be like chaff before the face of the wind, and like ashes that the whirlwind scatters.
19 Dieu, dites-vous, fera payer pour lui ses fils? Qu’il le fasse payer lui, et qu’il le sente!	19 God will preserve the grief of the father for his sons, and, when he repays, then he will understand.
20 Qu’il voie le malheur de ses propres yeux, qu’il boive la colère du Tout-Puissant!	20 His eyes will see his own destruction, and he will drink from the wrath of the Almighty.
21 Qu’a-t-il à faire de sa famille après lui, quand on a mis un terme au compte de ses mois?	21 For what does he care what happens to his house after him, or if the number of its months are reduced by half?
22 Faut-il faire la leçon à Dieu, à celui qui juge les êtres supérieurs?	22 Can anyone teach holy knowledge to God, who judges the exalted?
23 L’un meurt en pleine vigueur, heureux et prospère,	23 This one dies strong and healthy, rich and happy.
24 les flancs bien grassouillets, les os remplis de sève.	24 His gut is full of fat and his bones are moistened with marrow.
25 Un autre meurt dans la tristesse, sans avoir jamais savouré le bonheur.	25 In truth, another dies in bitterness of soul, without any resources.
26 Ensemble ils se couchent dans la poussière, où les vers vont grouiller sur eux.	26 And yet they will sleep together in the dust, and worms will cover them.
27 Oh, je devine vos pensées, et ces idées que vous vous faites sur moi.	27 Surely, I know your thoughts and your sinful judgments against me.
28 Vous dites: “Où est la maison du potentat, où est la tente des méchants?”	28 For you say, “Where is the house of the ruler, and where are the tabernacles of the impious?”
29 N’avez-vous pas interrogé ceux qui voyagent, ne retenez vous pas leurs témoignages?	29 Ask any passerby whom you wish, and you will realize that he understands these same things:
30 Au jour du malheur le méchant est épargné, au jour de la colère il échappe.	30 that the evil-doer is reserved for the day of destruction, and he will be led to the day of wrath.
31 Qui ose lui reprocher, en face, sa conduite et lui rendre ce qu’il a fait?	31 Who will reprove his way to his face, and who will repay him for what he has done?
32 Voici qu’on l’escorte au cimetière, et de bien haut son image regarde.	32 He will be led to the tomb, and he will remain awake in the chaos of the dead.
33 La terre prise au torrent lui est douce, les gens défilent en avant, et derrière lui c’est un peuple sans nombre.	33 He has been found acceptable to the banks of the River of Lamentation, and he will draw any man towards him, and there are countless before him.
34 Allez-vous me consoler avec du vent, avec des réponses où tout est illusoire?	34 Therefore, how long will you console me in vain, when your answer is shown to be repugnant to truth?
