| 1 E passando Iesù, vide uno uomo cieco dalla sua natività. | 1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth. |
| 2 E gli discepoli dimandorongli (e dissero): maestro, chi peccò, o costui o il padre o la madre sua? o per qual cagione costui è nato cieco? | 2 And his disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" |
| 3 Rispose Iesù (e disse): nè costui peccò, nè il padre né la madre; ma (è nato cieco) acoiò che l'opera di Dio si manifesti in lui. | 3 Jesus answered, "It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest in him. |
| 4 E a me conviene operare le opere di colui che mi ha mandato, mentre ch' egli è dì; imperò che verrà la notte, nella quale niuno può operare. | 4 We must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day; night comes, when no one can work. |
| 5 E mentre ch' io sono nel mondo, sono la luce del mondo. | 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." |
| 6 E detto ch' ebbe queste parole, sputò in terra, e fece luto col sputo, e fregollo agl' occhi. | 6 As he said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and anointed the man's eyes with the clay, |
| 7 E dissegli va, e làvati nel fonte di natatoia di Siloe; la qual è interpretata MESSO. Ed egli andò, e lavossi, e tornò e vedeva. | 7 saying to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. |
| 8 Li vicini li quali l'aveano in prima veduto (cieco e conosciutolo e) che stava a mendicare, dicevano: or non è questo colui che sedeva a mendicare? E alquanti dicevano: bene è esso. | 8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar, said, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?" |
| 9 E alquanti dicevano di no, ma è simile a lui. Ma egli dicea: io sono pure esso. | 9 Some said, "It is he"; others said, "No, but he is like him." He said, "I am the man." |
| 10 E loro dimandavano: come è così che gli occhi ti sono aperti? | 10 They said to him, "Then how were your eyes opened?" |
| 11 Ed egli rispondeva e diceva: quello uomo, ch' è detto Iesù, fece luto (col sputo) e fregommelo sopra gli occhi, e dissemi: va, e làvati nella fonte di natatoia di Siloe; e io andai, e lava'mi, e incontinente vidi. | 11 He answered, "The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash'; so I went and washed and received my sight." |
| 12 E loro dissero: dove è colui? Ed egli disse: io non so. | 12 They said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know." |
| 13 E loro menoronlo alli Farisei. | 13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. |
| 14 Era il giorno del sabbato, quando Iesù fece il luto, e aperse gli occhi suoi. | 14 Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. |
| 15 E anche un' altra volta gli Farisei dimandoronlo, come era stata la cosa, che così vedea. Ed egli rispose e disse: egli impose del luto in su gli occhi miei, e poi mi lavai, e vedo. | 15 The Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see." |
| 16 Dicevano alcuni Farisei: questo uomo non è di Dio, imperò che non guarda il sabbato. E alcuni dicevano: come è possibile, che uno uomo peccatore possa fare cotanti segni? Ed era infra loro. divisione. | 16 Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" There was a division among them. |
| 17 E anche dissero un' altra volta a quello ch' era stato cieco: e tu, che dici di colui che ti ha aperti gli occhi tuoi? Ed egli disse, che era profeta. | 17 So they again said to the blind man, "What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet." |
| 18 E con tutto questo non credettero gli giudei, che costui fusse stato cieco, e ora vedesse, insino a tanto che loro non fecero venire il padre e la madre. di colui ch' era nato cieco. | 18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight, |
| 19 E dimandorongli, e dissero: è questo il vostro figliuolo, il quale voi dite che nacque cieco? or come è, che ora vede? | 19 and asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?" |
| 20 Risposero il padre e la madre, e dissero : noi bene sappiamo ch' egli è nostro figliuolo, e che è nato cieco. | 20 His parents answered, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; |
| 21 Ma come ora si sia ch' egli vegga lume, e chi sia colui che [gli] abbia aperto gli occhi, non sappiamo; ma dimandate a lui, imperò ch' egli è in età; egli di sè medesimo renda testimonianza. | 21 but how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself." |
| 22 Questo disse il padre e la madre sua per paura de' giudei; imperò che loro aveano ordinato, che chi confessasse ch' egli fusse Cristo, fusse cacciato fuori della sinagoga. | 22 His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one should confess him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue. |
| 23 E però dissero: egli è in età, dimandate a lui. | 23 Therefore his parents said, "He is of age, ask him." |
| 24 E allora gli giudei chiamorono un' altra volta l'uomo ch' era stato cieco, e dissero a lui: rendi gloria a Dio; imperò che noi sappiamo che questo uomo è peccatore. | 24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner." |
| 25 Ed egli disse a loro: se egli è peccatore, questo non so io; ma una cosa so io bene, che io era cieco, e ora vedo. | 25 He answered, "Whether he is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see." |
| 26 E loro gli dissero: che ti fece egli? come t' aperse gli occhi? | 26 They said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" |
| 27 Ed egli disse a loro: io ve l'ho detto, e voi l'avete udito: adunque perchè più me ne dimandate? volete voi essere suoi discepoli? | 27 He answered them, "I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you too want to become his disciples?" |
| 28 E loro il maledissero, dicendo: tu sei suo discepolo; noi vogliamo essere discepoli di Moisè. | 28 And they reviled him, saying, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. |
| 29 Imperò che noi sappiamo che Iddio parlò a Moisè; ma costui non sappiamo donde si sia. | 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from." |
| 30 Rispose quello uomo, e disse: grande meraviglia mi fo, che voi non sappiate onde egli è; ma (io so bene che) egli ha aperti gli occhi miei, (che nacqui cieco). | 30 The man answered, "Why, this is a marvel! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. |
| 31 E sappiamo bene, che Iddio non esaudisce gli peccatori; ma sì colui ch' è fedele a Dio, e fa la sua volontà, colui esaudisce Iddio. | 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if any one is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. |
| 32 Dal mondo non fu mai udito, che alcuno aprisse gli occhi di niuno che nascesse cieco. | 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind. |
| 33 Se costui non fusse da Dio, non potrebbe fare queste cose. | 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." |
| 34 Risposero a lui (gli giudei) e dissero: tu sei tutto nato in peccato, e tu ci vo' ammaestrare? E caccioronlo fuori (del tempio). | 34 They answered him, "You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?" And they cast him out. |
| 35 E Iesù udì come l'aveano cacciato fuori (del tempio); e trovandolo, gli disse: credi tu nel Figliuolo di Dio? | 35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, "Do you believe in the Son of man?" |
| 36 Ed egli rispose (e disse): Signore, chi è colui, acciò ch' io creda in lui? | 36 He answered, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" |
| 37 Disse a lui Iesù: tu l' hai veduto; quello che parla teco, quello egli è esso | 37 Jesus said to him, "You have seen him, and it is he who speaks to you." |
| 38 Ed egli disse: credo, Signore. E gittossi in terra, e adorollo. | 38 He said, "Lord, I believe"; and he worshipped him. |
| 39 E Iesù disse a lui: io sono venuto in questo mondo nel giudicio, perchè quelli che non vedono vedano, e quelli che vedeno siano fatti ciechi. | 39 Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind." |
| 40 La qual cosa udittero alcuni de' Farisei, li quali erano con lui, e disserongli: adunque etiam noi siamo ciechi? | 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard this, and they said to him, "Are we also blind?" |
| 41 Dissegli Iesù: se voi foste nati ciechi, non averesti peccato; ma ora dicete; come vediamo! E imperò persevera il vostro peccato. | 41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, 'We see,' your guilt remains. |
